Second Star (Star Svensdotter #1)
Author: Dana Stabenow
Genre: Adventure

DESCRIPTION: When the Betelgeuse message was detected, it changed a lot of things on Earth. We began to look seriously outward, not with the heady optimism of the early days, but with deliberate calculation. We knew that Someone was out there, and that eventually, they'd be coming. If Earth didn't occupy the High Frontier, it could be ours to lose. Esther "Star" Svensdotter's job is overseeing the completion of the American Alliance's first O'Neill cylinder - a massive space hab capable of supporting thousands of colonists. It's just weeks away from commissioning, and she'll be damned if Luddite terrorists, squabbling bureaucrats, military takeovers or rogue AIs will stand in the way. Frontier justice on Ellfive sometimes involves an airlock - you don't want to be on the wrong side of justice. Or the wrong side of Star Svensdotter. The first in Dana Stabenow's Star Svensdotter trilogy, Second Star is a tale of first contact, declarations of independence, and new frontiers.

These are only a few of the exotic groups Percy Montmount has identified in his immense study of the human adolescent's rituals, "The Origin of the Species Revisited." And what better person to record these behaviors than one who is a member of no tribe? Ever since the death of his famous anthropologist father three years ago, Percy has blocked his grief by becoming an aloof observer of his classmates' odd rituals instead of an active player. But lately, it's gotten harder to classify his feelings as just biological responses to outside stimuli. Stimuli like his attraction to Elissa, a sexy, intelligent female biped, or his memories of Willard Stokes, the friend who committed suicide after suffering from unrequited love for a member of the Lipstick/Hairspray Tribe. And now that Graduation, that ultimate rite of passage, is almost upon him, Percy may be forced by unknown factors outside his tightly controlled environment to finally drop his field notebook and become what he dreads most: an actual participant in his own life.

Jaina Sutras, Part I
Author: Max Muller
Genre: History

DESCRIPTION: Part One of the Hermann Jacobi translation of the Jaina Sutras. This volume includes the Akaranga and Kalpa Sutras, two of the most important Jain sacred texts. The Akaranga Sutra outlines rules for Jain monks. Most notably it describes steps which monks must take to avoid harming other living beings, including the microscopic life forms which the ancient Jains believed pervaded the universe. The Kalpa sutra contains a biography of the founder of Jainism, Mahavira, as well as other founders of the religion, and a list of the successive Jain leaders. As is the practice at this site, the typography of the original has been preserved as far as possible. This means that italics are used to indicate distinctions between consonants in transliterated Sanskrit and Prakrit. The system used is documented on the charts attached to the Sacred Books of the East page. Most notably in this system, 'j' (roughly, the initial sound of the English word 'jam') is written italic g, hence the spelling Gain throughout, which is pronounced 'Jain.' This book is normally cited as 'Jaina Sutras' in modern publications and bibliographies.

Technical Problems?
If you're having problems leaving a Comment, Google's blogger-help asks that you clear the '' cookies on your browser's Tools or Options menu bar and that will fix the Comment-box problems (until they have a permanent fix).

IF that doesn't work either, then UNcheck the "keep me signed in" box -- Google-help says that should allow your comment to post (it's a workaround to a current bug).
Apologies for the problems.
