UPDATE - I've decided that there are enough free-Kindle book sites doing daily lists and that this blog concentrates on Kindle-related news in addition to special links to quickly find free contemporary Kindle books, so I'll need the time to keep that up to date instead of being yet another almost daily free-book list even if they are forum recommendations.
UPDATE 2 - See this blog's FREE KINDLE BOOKS guide to Kindle or Kindle-compatible books from sources everywhere, including Non-Amazon sources, though there are ready-made subset searches for free NON-Classics or Contemporary books at Amazon, by publlication date, bestsellers, highest-ranked.
Am keeping this list here as a SAMPLING ONLY of what types of books are released as free books for a day to 5 days (or more).
_______
You can check the Kindle forum for 'free book' threads at any time of course to see the daily info.
Ongoing info of possible interest:
. A Kindle Free Books message thread listing abbreviations and acronyms, by Randy
. If you want to directly Send to [your] Cloud [to your server space]
instead of to your devices: How to set up Send-to-Cloud, by Randy
Again, some books are free for only a few hours, some for a day or 5, so
Double-check your selections for Price.
(Watch out for the huge-number showing for any Prime's $0.00 "price," which is for *borrowing* (via using only the Kindle device as a download-target rather than a computer), but the Prime $0.00 figure looks like a purchase price and is sized larger than the normal pricing, which of course has confused people.)

FIRE ON THE HILL (Book One of FIRE ON THE HILL)
Although presented here as a novel, FIRE ON THE HILL is a true story based on recorded facts. Michael Dwyer was born, cradled and then grew from boy to man under the shade of the Wicklow Hills. He knows every inch of them, knows all their secrets: the river streams to quench a man's thirst, the wild game to keep away hunger, the wood in excess to burn, and the sheltering caves. And then, in the historic year of 1798 he comes to know love.

Elsie - Adventures of an Arizona Schoolteacher 1913-1916
Biographies & Memoirs
In 1912, the first year of Arizona's statehood, rural Verde Valley was home to enterprising ranchers and farmers who raised cattle, crops ? and children. These children needed a school. So just as they mail-ordered supplies from the Sears catalog, the community mail-ordered a teacher. Elsie Hayes, a college graduate, came from a world of concerts and literary clubs. The teacher's tiny shack in Cornvillle was a far cry from her family's lovely home in Long Beach, California.

Coming home from school, Sarah finds her well-dressed, pill-popping mother lying disheveled on their living room couch. At night, to escape their parents' arguments, Sarah and her oldest brother, Peter, find solace in music, while her two younger brothers retreat to their rooms and imaginary lives. Any vestige of decorum and stability drains away when their mother dies in a car crash one terrible winter day. Soon after, their father, a self-absorbed, bombastic professor begins an affair with a younger colleague. Sarah, aggrieved, dives into two summer romances that lead to unforeseen consequences. In a story that will make you laugh and cry, Night Swim shows how a family, bound by heartache, learns to love again.

Elsie - Adventures of an Arizona Schoolteacher 1913-1916
Biographies & Memoirs
In 1912, the first year of Arizona's statehood, rural Verde Valley was home to enterprising ranchers and farmers who raised cattle, crops „Ÿ and children. These children needed a school. So just as they mail-ordered supplies from the Sears catalog, the community mail-ordered a teacher. Elsie Hayes, a college graduate, came from a world of concerts and literary clubs. IN THIS TRUE STORY, Elsie's 100-year-old journals, photographs and detailed letters home paint a picture of a time and place that has since faded, and give insight into the early history of Cornville and Williams, Arizona. Even more than this, they are a vivid portrayal of colorful adventure, tragedy, and a heartbreaking story of lost love.

I picked up 3 from us.kinlib:
In the Shadow of Vesuvius - historical fiction, children's/YA - Vesuvius is awake. Mira, a 15-year-old slave, has seen what's coming. To save her life, and that of her young charge, she must escape her stubborn owner and flee from Herculaneum.
A Hemorrhaging of Souls - mystery - A series of unexplained deaths shatters the serenity of a Vancouver Island girls' school, and Tempest Ivory, child psychologist and soprano, races to solve the mystery before it claims more lives.
City of Darkness (City of Mystery) - historical mystery - 1888 London, where Jack the Ripper roams the streets with impunity and Scotland Yard seems helpless to stop him. The science of forensics is in its infancy but a few detectives recognize that they are dealing with a different sort of killer. (No look inside and the builk of the 5* reviews look suspect [look closely], but the book premise sounds interesting and I'll give it a shot.)

Tsunami Blue (The Tsunami Blue Series) (Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Romantic Suspense) Welcome to the near future, where our blue planet has been forever changed by a series of deadly tsunami waves... With her badass rain boots, her faithful dog, and the ability to predict the monster tsunamis that have reduced the Earth to a series of islands, Kathryn "Blue" O'Malley isn't afraid of much. Cut off from all society, she takes to the airwaves as Tsunami Blue, hoping to save something of humanity as the world around her crumbles. But Blue should be afraid, because her message reaches the wrong ears. . .
Torch (YA Paranormal) Can true love survive fire, flood and feuding families? Phoenix Forsythe and Kai Seaver are a lethal combination. With paranormal powers that make them natural enemies, and families at war for centuries, the two mix like fire and water. Still, they are drawn to each other as irresistibly as Romeo and Juliet when they meet in quaint, friendly Rosewood, where Torches and Floods have long vowed to live in harmony.
When Darkness Falls (Horror) A desire to be reunited with her dead twin is about to become very real.... Gwen's had a tough year. With the anniversary of her sister's murder approaching, she finds she isn't ready for the real world. Her friends have another plan in mind. A visit to the mountains, and a weekend of fun, is what they promise. None of them expect it to be the trip to somewhere they didn't plan and one that may cost them more than they could have imagined.
Barely Alive (Barely Alive Series) (YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy) In twelve weeks, seventeen-year-old Paul Ledger will be dead. At least he hopes so. Paul is trapped in the worst cult the United States has ever seen. Infected with a zombie virus, symptoms culminate in a dead body but thriving mind over a course of twelve weeks. If he doesn't earn the final death he longs for, he'll be chained in a basement facility, moaning for human flesh for eternity.
CLUB JUSTICE (The Trinity Falls Series) (Mystery/Suspense) Frustrated by a system that binds his hands yet frees those that prey on the innocent, Detective Zeke Brawer pushes the law to the letter and beyond. His shooting of a serial rapist brings him under Internal Affairs investigation, and makes him the target of a personal vendetta that threatens his career, family, and the motorcycle club he loves.
I usually don't pick up novellas, but these two seem quite offbeat (just start reading the samples!):
Beyond the Valley of the Apocalypse Donkeys (Literary Fiction) A nudist colony. A rare film. A donkey-headed woman. A murder. The hummingbird. Explore identity, marriage, madness, and obsession in a phantasmagoric orgy of violence and voyeurism.
The Long Night Ahead (Mystery/Thriller, Hard-Boiled) Private detective Bird Dempsey heads to the city to track down a missing girl, but he soon discovers that it's not the first disappearance to have taken place in the seedy red light district of Malone Junction in recent weeks. Now Bird has to figure out whether the girls who keep turning up dead are simply collateral in the turf wars between the local mob boss and corrupt developers, or if a darker, more primal force is at play.

Here are my choices for the day. Some are repeats, but I think of them as up-votes.
Soleá From the product description: "Soleá is a humorous tale of troubled minds and equally troubled relationships; a glimpse into the colourful world of flamenco, and a compelling romantic mystery that will keep you guessing till the end."
Night Swim Already mentioned
Beyond the Valley of the Apocalypse Donkeys Also already mentioned. But I like that the cover looks like a woodcut.
City of Darkness (City of Mystery) I think this one has also already been linked, but it has a number of good reviews and is about Jack the Ripper and late 19th century London.
South to Alaska: A True Story of Courage and Survival from the Heartland of America to the Heart of a Dream This one I haven't seen mentioned yet. By Sweet Diva Reader Marla
The Winter Letter (The 'King of All' Series)- Fantasy
On his thirteenth birthday Will receives a strange letter from a king. The letter is full of nonsense, so he figures it's a prank, but then there are three knocks on his front door. By the next day his entire world has fallen apart and the strange letter makes perfect sense.
Near the closing the letter reads: Tomorrow, get on the 3:30 train. Go south. Get off at sunset and walk deep into the eastern woods. Knock on the door of the only house you come across...
Did this so-called king know what was going to happen beforehand or did he orchestrate the ordeal himself?
Unrelenting- Suspense
Two very different men from two very different worlds careen toward each other with devastating implications for both. Neither are "bad" men, yet both are a long way from perfect. Life is a terrifying combination of the choices we make, and those made on our behalf over which we have no control.
Southern Fried Monster (Tales of Kilterless Kulinary)- Humor
This fun-filled, action-packed, and apathy-busting novel is replete with a swirl of horror, humor, and insight into the darker corners of fear. It isn't always the monster under that bed that we fear the most. But if it is, we certainly have a ton of them in Southern Fried Monster!
The story explores the real things that scare us through the eyes of Guy Sayonara, a hapless paragon of mediocrity who has but one dream - to become a world famous chef. The only problem is... well, that he is a hapless paragon of mediocrity. Having a deep desire to become something that you are only adequate at (if that) is but one of the many journeys taken down the darker alleys of the psyche.
THE MUSIC BOX- Literary Fiction
...is a story about music, art and inspiration. A timeless tale intended for adults and children alike.
...takes you to a place somewhere between Wonderland and a Midsummer Night's Dream.
In this timeless worldly tale the five senses are personified as fairies. When Maggie gives up-and-coming composer Fredric a music box, he embarks on an unexpected journey.
FIRE ON THE HILL (Book One of FIRE ON THE HILL)- Historical Fiction (based on a true story, but has some fictional characters)

By MamaSylvia [comments on books named]
I read Walk in the Snark (not going to put the danged links in again) and tried to read Mancode Exposed. I liked Snark, although it uses an odd format, alternating sometimes hysterically funny blog posts with downer recollections of a former boyfriend who died. I couldn't finish Mancode, it relied mostly on body-part humor which I outgrew in second grade, but it's not suitable for an actual second-grader.

Technical Problems?
If you're having problems leaving a Comment, Google's blogger-help asks that you clear the 'blogger.com' cookies on your browser's Tools or Options menu bar and that will fix the Comment-box problems (until they have a permanent fix).
IF that doesn't work either, then UNcheck the "keep me signed in" box -- Google-help says that should allow your comment to post (it's a workaround to a current bug).
Apologies for the problems.
