KINDLEFIRE SOFTWARE UPDATE VERSION 6.2 IS READY
Kindle Fire Software Update, V6.2 is available online, and downloadable at the link if the update isn't already on your Kindle Fire.
The 'announcement' was made by customers on a Kindle Forum thread after they saw the update appear on their Kindle Fires. Mine is still at v6.1 and the 'Update your Kindle" button for "System Version" setting is grayed out.
Along with the improvements listed on the update page, one forum member mentioned "way faster web browsing!" (I've no idea if that is so or if it was just a faster experience at the time.)
Amazon's directions:
' If you are not sure what software version you're running, tap the Quick Settings icon, tap "More," then tap "Device." If your System Version begins with "Current version: 6.2," you are running the latest software. If your System Version begins with "Current version: 6.0 or 6.1," follow the instructions [at that page] to take advantage of all of the features available for Kindle Fire.
. . .
To update your Kindle, ensure
. you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and that
. your battery is fully charged.
Tap the Quick Settings icon in the upper right corner of your device,
then tap "Sync."
The software update will automatically download in the background and will be applied once download is complete and the device is asleep. '
The above describes a semi-automated update.
However, if you don't have a WiFi connection at the time and want to do this, you can do a MANUAL update at the software update page for Kindle Fire, where Amazon has step-by-step directions.
What was changed?
As too often happens, Amazon gives no notes on what is being updated, outside of saying that the update "provides improvements to the operation of your Kindle Fire."
Some possible answers by customers in the forum (Amazon should be doing this, with any software update.)
Customer James G. Henderson posted in the Amazon Kindle Forum thread the following improvements noted:
' Better parental controls in the ap store, more responsive touchscreen, back button works better, less spazzy carousel navigation, and typing is improved. 'I don't know if he just noticed these things or if some Mobileread Forum members have again looked at some of the changes in the code and determined the above, which they try to do for each update where Amazon chooses not to communicate what was improved.
No one has reported the hoped-for carousel-content changes customers have requested in large numbers on the Amazon forum -- that we be able to NOT display (via an option setting) every book in our archive. Maybe it's there but not noticed yet.
If you notice changes and have time, please let us know what you find. Thanks.

I don't know whether believe to the words of customers about it's advantages or not. It's a pity that I don't have enough time to check it and to find more improvements, I'm gonna wait some time to get more facts.. and only then maybe I'll try it, but nevertheless, thanks for great post.
ReplyDeleteWell I installed the update and I must say it feels faster. Not perfect, but a whole lot better. The touchscreen seems more fine-tuned. I have not had nearly so many times when I had to press a button twice. Most importantly, the web browser finally feels fast. The actual speed may not matter but the User experience feels faster. The only thing negative I can say is it looks like I will have to re-root. Also, I will have to reinstall the custom font I used so the kindle's default sans font would support polytonic Greek better. Anyway, it seems like Amazon has really gotten some things fixed so as to make the whole thing feel faster. Definitely an update worth getting ASAP if you use your fire a lot.
ReplyDeleteI just downloaded 6.2 and the volume and brightness sliders appear to be markedly more responsive than before. Previously it seemed like it took seconds before the system even realized you had the slider pressed on (let alone adjusted).
ReplyDeleteToo bad there still isn't a chapter skip function like on the K-3.
All,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the speedy, helpful feedback!
Timothy and Anonymous, you named some improvements a lot of us have been hoping for.
The volume slider certainly slid in large increments with nothing in between. Glad that one and the brightness ones are more responsive.
Touchscreen responsiveness improvements: a big plus. I've been using Dolphin instead of silk because I really prefer to use Full Screen but maybe I'll get back to Silk to experience the improvements.
Thanks much!
I subscribe to your blog on my Kindle ereader and navigated to your webpage for the first time to thank you for the post on ver 6.2 update. Earlier that day, my Fire rebooted itself a couple of times and I didn't know what was going on with it. After reading your blog, I checked my system version, and sure enough, it was 6.2. Since the upgrade, it is noticeably more responsive to touch input and the processing is faster.
ReplyDeleteOn a sidenote: I'm more of a reader than a watcher and I can't see myself using the Fire for reading books, it's too heavy and not as good as the ereader, but I like it for casual web surfing while watching TV.
Rasenna,
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to navigate on over after reading the blog, to say hello and to give some feedback on what your experience is with the software update.
Glad the post helped in the puzzlement that is normal when Amazon transfers 'over the air' updates to some but doesn't let them know in advance it's happening.
I've found the touch response to be more reliable too, and not so over- or under-sensitive, depending on what the action is.
You use the KFire in a way that's similar to what I do - mildly surf the web in front of either the tv tube or my blogger tube, so there's no down (commercial) time :-)
Usemeplz,
I wouldn't "believe the customers" but I'd take their feedback as indicators and things to watch for.
