KINDLE TIPS: Access your computer files from anywhere with Kindle Fire. Update2

ACCESS YOUR COMPUTER FROM ANYWHERE WITH YOUR KINDLE FIRE (AND ANDROID PHONES)

But this version is OPTIMIZED FOR KINDLE.

This is version 37.0 -- the software has been available for some time for Android phones and tends to get 5-star ratings except for certain devices some time ago under, say, version 30.0 that have since been fixed by later versions.

The Android Market/Google Play store has 440 reviews, with an an average rating of 4.3 stars that includes ratings for problems with some phones with much older versions which later-reviews show have been fixed.

Amazon has approved this app for the Appstore AND the Kindle Fire (too often they have not authorized good apps for the Kindle Fire, either for ages or forever).

One thing that springs to mind is security of files if your device is lost or stolen, so in this kind of case, in which you access your home computer, password protect your Kindle Fire too.  I already use a 4-character password on mine (to make it harder but not impossible for pro's and, with this situation, one should use a longer, difficult password, though you'd have to enter it each time you wake up your Kindle Fire (which is why I use only 4 characters).  The app has its own password protection for the Kindle Fire interaction with the computer, so that's first-security.

UPDATE2 - INSTALLING ON COMPUTER - This was not on previous referenced pages.
For some reason, this info was not on the earlier pages I referenced.

Three Easy Steps

  • Go to Tonido website to get the download to install Tonido on your remote computer.
  • Create your userid on the remote computer.
  • Use the userid/ password to access the remote computer from your Kindle
There is also a Kindle Fire Tonido page with illustrations.

UPDATE2 - Tonido is amazing. But the webpage header ID'g the URL given you upon registration ends with with ':10001' and this caused it not to connect until I removed the ':10001'

VIDEO
Here's a 6-minute video by dailyappshow.com done March 2011 showing how it's done on an Android phone and what steps are used to access your computer (note that Kindle-Edition blogs on e-Ink Kindles cannot get the video of course).

Note that, except for e-Ink Kindles and the Kindle-edition blog, you can click on the picture frame at bottom right-edge of the video when it's running, to get Full Screen video, and then Esc to get back.

If your computer is set up to not allow iframes, you can see the video at YouTube instead.

Thanks to Len Edgerly's The Kindle Chronicles podcast for the alert.  The podcast is ready each Friday night and you should visit it regularly to keep up with things Kindle.

NOTE: TO AVOID SPAM being posted instantly, this blog uses the blogger.com "DELAY" feature.

Am often away much of the day, and postings won't show up right away. Posts done to use referrer-links may never show up.

Usually, am online enough to release comments within a day though, so the hard-to-read match-text tests for commenting won't be needed this way.

Feedback and questions are welcome. Thanks for participating.

Technical Problems?
If you're having problems leaving a Comment, Google's blogger-help asks that you clear the 'blogger.com' cookies on your browser's Tools or Options menu bar and that will fix the Comment-box problems (until they have a permanent fix).

IF that doesn't work either, then UNcheck the "keep me signed in" box -- Google-help says that should allow your comment to post (it's a workaround to a current bug).
Apologies for the problems.

TIP: There's a size limit. If longer than 3500 characters or so, in a text editor, make two posts out of it.
