The Kindle App for Android updatea v3.5.0.83 is quite a big update that offers added access to a much larger assortment of richly illustrated Kindle books and allows you to email personal documents to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address -- Amazon delivers them to your device and automatically archives the documents.
Thanks for Twitter alerts sent by Elias Zuniga and Corneliu Dascalu.
Supported formats for personal documents, including non-Amazon books:
PDF, MOBI, HTML, DOC, TXT and PRC
The free Kindle for Android now supports the new Kindle Format 8 (KF8) - HTML5, with access to popular comics like Batman, Superman and many more, plus over 1000 illustrated children's titles, including Brown Bear and Curious George. It brings richer formatting capabilities to thousands of other Kindle titles, and now Android device users can select from multiple dictionary languages when looking up definitions in Kindle books.
Access to over 100 newspapers and magazines is included with no Kindle required, but if you have a Kindle, the Whispersync technology syncs last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across various devices.
The update can be downloaded from the Amazon Android Appstore or from Google Play (formerly Android Market).

Nice to see KF8 come to the Android app. I'd like to see margin adjustments and 2-column options when in landscape. Too much empty space on a larger tablet device. Some typeface choices would be nice also.
ReplyDeleteI tried Watchmen on my Xoom and I can actually read most of it easily without panel view. I think it has native resolution of 1280x800, since when viewed on Fire it is slightly letter-boxed due to the slightly different aspect ratio. Those files are huge!
Personal Documents service still doesn't support KF8 though.
Wonder when the iOS app will get kf8. The latest versions seem to have problems. Direct side-loading no long works (people use it for ad hoc sync), and I can no longer open enchanced edition of 'Jacqueline Kennedy' without crashing the app (on iPod Touch). Ironic that the one app that's supposed to allow use of enhanced content is the only one I can't read it on.
And of course where is kf8 for KNT and KT?
Tom, you're the perfect person to have for beta testing of software products.
DeleteBeen using Aldiko in two-panel format for ePub because a reviewer said this dual-panel view was new to v2.1 but I see that my 2.0.x Aldiko does it too, on Kindle Fire, in smaller fonts of course.
The v2.1 is said to be tablet-focused but I didn't see much change on the KFire. Will try it more thorougly on the Samsung 10.1 Tab. Hmmm, Aldiko doesn't have highlighting, notes and
even *bookmarks* ? Mantano has the features though.
Andrys - Are you saying I can have the Kindle for Android app on the Fire? I bought it (free) when on my PC and now I cannot find it to install it.
DeleteThank you,
Edwina
Edwina, my posting was unclear, so I should modify it later.
DeleteNo, the Kindle Fire already has the built-in Kindle app specifically for Amazon's own modified-Android device, so the one specifically for general Android devices would not work right. The Kindle app on the Kindle Fire is always active. You can close it or 'kill' it to save running memory but, a certain segment of it always opens right back up, ready for work, I guess.
