Amazon has set a software update to go directly to the current line of Kindle Fire tablets
-- I noticed that mine was being received and installed today, August 15, 2014. It suddenly turned on and did the update. This will be true for most owners of these tablets.
The update hasn't been announced in the forums, possibly because it's considered a minor update. Amazon's wording at the software update pages:
"The software update includes general improvements and performance enhancements."
General instructions from Amazon's help pages
To Download & Install Software Updates Automatically
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.
- Tap Device, and then tap System Updates.
- Tap Check Now. If an update is available, your Kindle Fire will automatically download the update.
- After you download the update, tap Update.
However, some who haven't received an update yet may want to download and install these manually rather than wait for the automatic update. They'll need to determine which software version is on the device...
Here are the Current and Latest Update versions (August 2014)
and the Update pages for those wanting or needing to manually install the updates:

I don't know exactly when it happened (and maybe it was always thus), but 'immersion reading' sync between text and voice is a bit messed up now, at least if you lock the screen. In that case the voice keeps advancing, but when you unlock, the text is still where it was when you locked and forgets that you have read further. It's about the same with the Android app. And if you switch between devices the wrong location is exchanged.
ReplyDeleteYikes. On only two occasions did I try immersion reading and both times it was for a blog entry. I do use lock screens but did not specifically try that. I remember only seeing no problems during just exploring the feature.
DeleteMaybe they have it under code similar to the audio for music, where people want the sound to continue when are screens are locked.
But that's definitely a bug for sync'g text with the audio! Not quite 'immersion' ! :-)
Thanks, Tom.
It doesn't always fail with screen gets locked, for the most part it does work as expected. There are probably other factors that I haven't isolated (taking an incoming call, switching apps while continuing to listen, offline/online, ?)
DeleteBut the fact that it happens even sometimes is surprising. I would think there would be a single 'location' global that both text and audio mode read and write to. Then how could it fail to sync? It suggests some ad hoc design.
Tom, sorry I didn't see this earlier. I agree - it's very odd. But the text portion of the code is somehow unaware that the audio has gone on (in locked state) without it and the audio code is not notifying the text portion when the screen's unlocked.
DeleteDid you report this to the developers? Seems an important oddity they need to fix...
