Kindle Fire HDX and HD2 Tips: Software updates - general improvements for the Kindle Fire tablets are here - v11.3.2.5, v13.3.2.5, and v14.3.2.5.

Amazon has set a software update to go directly to the current line of Kindle Fire tablets
-- I noticed that mine was being received and installed today, August 15, 2014.   It suddenly turned on and did the update.  This will be true for most owners of these tablets.

The update hasn't been announced in the forums, possibly because it's considered a minor update.  Amazon's wording at the software update pages:

"The software update includes general improvements and performance enhancements."

General instructions from Amazon's help pages

To Download & Install Software Updates Automatically

Sync your Kindle Fire HD 2nd Generation, or Kindle Fire HDX 7", or Kindle Fire HD 8.9" to download the latest software update automatically.
Your Kindle Fire needs to be fully charged and connected to a Wi-Fi network before you can download the software update.
  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Device, and then tap System Updates.
  3. Tap Check Now. If an update is available, your Kindle Fire will automatically download the update.
  4. After you download the update, tap Update.
Your Kindle Fire will restart during the software update. After the restart, the message "Installing system update" will appear on the screen.
_______

However, some who haven't received an update yet may want to download and install these manually rather than wait for the automatic update.  They'll need to determine which software version is on the device...

  • Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.

  • Tap Device, and then tap System Updates.  If you have the latest software update, it should look like this: 11.3.2.3.2_user_323001620 [if for Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd Gen tablet, in this case, or later.]

  • Here are the Current and Latest Update versions (August 2014)
and the Update pages for those wanting or needing to manually install the updates:

Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd Gen - Update page
        11.3.2.5

Kindle Fire HDX 7" - Update page
        13.3.2.5

Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" - Update page
        14.3.2.5

    1. I don't know exactly when it happened (and maybe it was always thus), but 'immersion reading' sync between text and voice is a bit messed up now, at least if you lock the screen. In that case the voice keeps advancing, but when you unlock, the text is still where it was when you locked and forgets that you have read further. It's about the same with the Android app. And if you switch between devices the wrong location is exchanged.

      1. Yikes. On only two occasions did I try immersion reading and both times it was for a blog entry. I do use lock screens but did not specifically try that. I remember only seeing no problems during just exploring the feature.

Maybe they have it under code similar to the audio for music, where people want the sound to continue when are screens are locked.

But that's definitely a bug for sync'g text with the audio! Not quite 'immersion' ! :-)

        Thanks, Tom.

      2. It doesn't always fail with screen gets locked, for the most part it does work as expected. There are probably other factors that I haven't isolated (taking an incoming call, switching apps while continuing to listen, offline/online, ?)

But the fact that it happens even sometimes is surprising. I would think there would be a single 'location' global that both text and audio mode read and write to. Then how could it fail to sync? It suggests some ad hoc design.

      3. Tom, sorry I didn't see this earlier. I agree - it's very odd. But the text portion of the code is somehow unaware that the audio has gone on (in locked state) without it and the audio code is not notifying the text portion when the screen's unlocked.
Did you report this to the developers? Seems an important oddity they need to fix...

Am often away much of the day, and postings won't show up right away. Posts done to use referrer-links may never show up.

Usually, am online enough to release comments within a day though, so the hard-to-read match-text tests for commenting won't be needed this way.

    Technical Problems?
If you're having problems leaving a Comment, Google's blogger-help asks that you clear the 'blogger.com' cookies on your browser's Tools or Options menu bar and that will fix the Comment-box problems (until they have a permanent fix).

IF that doesn't work either, then UNcheck the "keep me signed in" box -- Google-help says that should allow your comment to post (it's a workaround to a current bug).
    Apologies for the problems.
