Kindle News Roundup: AT&T Kindle Fire 8.9" for $249 w/ 2-yr data plan. Amazon Cloud gets File Sync. Amazon's new Kindel, Director of mobile-something.

AT&T is offering, "for a limited time," starting April 5, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE (cellular network access) tablet for as low as $249 (rather than $399) if you agree to sign a two-year contract for an AT&T data plan.

This is to clarify a bit what you get and what you agree to, for that price.

The lowest cost option for this is $10 per month to connect the tablet with an AT&T Mobile Share plan, which requires a smartphone with a data plan.

 As their press release states:
"With Mobile Share, new and existing customers can share a single bucket of data across smartphones, tablets, and other compatible devices. Customers can select Mobile Share or choose one of AT&T's individual or family plans."

As quickly as tablets are upgraded these days, a 2-year lock-in is something to ponder though.

As mentioned -- for the Mobile Share plan, a smartphone with data plan is required.  And if you already have one with a data plan, it would cost you $10/mo. to share its 4G LTE (4G where it's available and 3G otherwise).

I pay $20/mo. to do that tethering, using the cell phone as a modem, giving the Kindle Fire WiFi capability that way when no WiFi network is available.  It uses the smartphone battery at the same time of course.  And there is a limit to the amount of 4G data on the smartphone plan.

According to their description you can get $100 off any tablet if you agree to a 2-yr wireless agreement with data for a minimum $14.99/mo.* or the Mobile Share plan.
"...An additional $50 activation credit is available for customers who purchase their device at AT&T retail stores."  And that's how you arrive at the $249 figure.

Once you've used the max data alloted for a month on any plan, it's "$15 per GB for add'l data."

* Currently, AT&T's normal $20/mo. plan covers only 300MB/mo and that's only enough to do some email and text reading (not so much web browsing and certainly not movies).  In January, AT&T's $20/mo. plan replaced their $15/mo. plan that offered only 200MB/mo.

Amazon's own $399 price comes with the option of 4G/LTE for one year at 250MB/mo. for $50 per year the first year and there's no requirement to be on a data plan the 2nd year.
  That's a total of $449.

That's important because with the cheapest, smartphone-sharing plan at $10/mo. that's $240 over the $249 price, or $489 total required.  For the $15/mo. individual plan for a tablet, it's only 300MB~ data/mo. and that would be $360 above the $249 cost, for a total $609 total price over two years.

If you want that 4G data, 300MB/mo. won't be enough if you use it for web browsing, and it will cost another $15 per GB of add'l data in a month.

If you do want 4G for your tablet (and why else would you buy the 4G model, except that it does offer 64GB storage space) and you already have a data plan on your smartphone, then that $120/yr to share your phone's data plan is worthwhile but they require a 2-year sign-up for that, so consider the $240 additional in your price comparisons.

"Amazon turns Cloud Drive into a Dropbox rival with file syncing."
  ArsTechnica's Jon Brodkin writes:
' "The new app for Windows and Mac now includes File Sync, which lets users easily store and access files in the Amazon Cloud from a folder on their computer," an Amazon spokesperson told Ars in an e-mail. "Files in this folder are automatically stored in Cloud Drive and can be accessed from a computer or the Web.

When you install the app on a second computer all of your synced files are available there as well. The updated app makes it simple for users to put files in Cloud Drive and to access them from any of their computers, ensuring that they always have access to the latest version of their files from home and on the road."

... The desktop application supports all Windows versions from XP to 8 and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8. '

Unfortunately, unlike Dropbox and Google Drive, it doesn't provide syncing to Android, iOS or other mobile platforms and apparently Amazon has "nothing specific to share" when asked about their future plans on that.

Kindle's Kindel
redOrbit's Enid Burns reports that Microsoft's former GM for their Windows Phone, Charlie Kindel, coyly updated his LinkedIn profile to post his new position at Amazon as "Director, Something Secret," per Mashable.  Burns wrote that Kindel added that he's working on "something wonderful" at Amazon.

In her round up, Burns adds that GeekWire quotes Kindel's added description: "I’m building a new team going after a totally new area for Amazon.  I’m hiring cloud and mobile developers and testers, program managers, and product managers...”

  Burns points out:
' As mentioned in his LinkedIn profile, Kindel’s hire list suggests the secret project is related to a mobile product but also mentions cloud computing.  It is undetermined whether this could be a smartphone with cloud capabilities or a cloud-based service for smartphone users. '

That's the roundup for today.

Kindle News: The coming Amazon smartphone. Expanded textbook rentals? Reports on the Digital Book World Conference.

More rumors of an Amazon smartphone soon and a widening of Kindle textbook-rental offerings, plus reports on Digital Book World Conference

There aren't many news stories the last few days except the ones that say that, according to the usual Taiwan news sources, Amazon will release a smartphone by summer 2013 and that it'll probably cost between $100-$200 without the need for a long-term contract.  They suggest that Foxconn has already signed a deal and that the "initial order for the very first Kindle Smartphone is said to total 5 million units."

Without a contract? That would be a no-brainer for buyers who just see no need for the latest whizbang smartphone.  As one who enjoys the Samsung Galaxy S2, and its ability to give a few devices WiFi via the tethering feature, I wouldn't be one of that target market, but it's a big segment from what I've seen from friends and family who have no interest in the fancier phones but who do want a smartphone and who don't want to tie themselves down to a 2-yr plan to get a decent price.
I did get my Samsung for a penny when Amazon Wireless had one of those specials.

A big-selling smartphone would be another draw for app developers.

Speaking of apps...
Business Insider's Business Intelligence is selling a full report on "How Amazon is Trying to Create A Huge Mobile Business" and offering a free trial on what would be a $300 to $400 yearly subscription for businesses needing that kind of information.  In the column describing this, they say:
' Software sales:  The Amazon Appstore has been a huge success on the Kindle Fire.  Developers make almost as much revenue per active user as they do on iOS, and Apple executives reportedly worry that Amazon's controlled, iTunes-like approach makes it more competitive than other app stores, including one operated by Google.

Given strong early results, Amazon shouldn't have a hard time convincing developers to bring their apps to an Amazon phone. '

Amazon and book rentals? - an expansion of textbook rentals
There also has been some excitement about Amazon's apparent testing of book rentals (see Dave Zatz's "Zatz Not Funny" page for the first example cited).  I saw a couple of more rentable non-fiction Kindle books over the weekend but didn't note the names.  The kicker for those hoping that this will include novels is that every Kindle book noted, as well as the two I've seen, is a non-fiction book recommended for classrooms.

Textbooks have had rental plans at Amazon for some time.

I first explained how it works on July 19, 2011, in the blog entry "Amazon's Kindle Textbook Rentals - Up to 80% off"  And this is still something many families don't know about, so it's worth a read 1.5 yrs later.

The recent ones, though, are "softer" textbooks in that they're not the heavy-duty $100+ textbooks you normally see but they're, so far, published by more academically-inclined publishers.  Would the Big5 publishers be interested in this for the fiction titles? We'll see, but I'm not optimistic.  Still -- better only a few dollars (for rental) than no dollars.

But for now it's good to see the alternative spelled out on the product page for some of the non-fiction books that are not the usual hardcore textbooks.

The Kindle Chronicles' Len Edgerly Details the Digital Book World Conference
The Kindle Chronicles' Len Edgerly offers an extremely thorough three days of detailed LIVE blogging of the DBW Conference that anyone interested in Publishing today should peruse.  This Conference and Expo took place January 15-17 in NY.

It's capped off by the weekly podcast's interview segment, which this week involves seven interviewees at DBW, including David Burleigh from OverDrive (which handles the Public Library lending of e-books).

Len links to the work of all those interviewed.  In that list, I saw that Paul Biba, Former Editor-in-Chief of Teleread, reported on the Conference also, as he has for years.  Paul's view of the proceedings is an intriguing read, describing what worked for attendees and what didn't.  You can also read other blog articles he's written for Goodereader.

Kindle News: Story links - Amazon smartphone, Amazon China hurdles, new Instant Prime Video agreements, Instant Video app for iPhone, iPod touch, Cloud Player for Samsung Smart TVs and for Roku, EU price-fixing settlement

Since I don't blog about everything but do come across some stories that will be of interest to most readers here, I'll provide a listing of links to those from time to time.

Today's, with some catch-up involved

. CENS.com - "Foxconn Allegedly Manufacturing Amazon's Smartphone Model"
It wouldn't be ready until 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2013, at a price between US$100-$200.  Details are at this Taiwan Economic News site.

. Morning Whistle reports that China officials are giving Amazon grief about the opening of its Kindle store there.  The store, launched Dec 13, is operated by Chinese publishing organization ChineseAll.com -- so, it seems Amazon is using ChineseAll.com's licenses to operate its store, which is a no-no, "per an unnamed source in the publishing industry."

. Amazon announces an "exclusive content licensing agreement with Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution to add TNT drama series Falling Skies and the Warner Bros. Television-produced TNT series The Closer to its Prime Instant Video catalog," which will be appreciated by Prime members who will then get instant access to these titles at no additional cost.

That includes all seven seasons of The Closer plus the current as well as future seasons of Falling Skies on Prime Instant Video.

. "Customer Favorites: Best-Selling Books of 2012" page (or the latest one) was another announcement by Amazon.  These include Adult plus Kids and Teens Kindle books.

. "Amazon Instant Video App Now Available for iPhone and iPod touch" -- it was ready for the iPad some time ago, and one hasn't been announced for Android so far.

. "Amazon Cloud Player App Comes to Samsung Smart TVs" -- good news for those of you who have one...

. "Amazon Cloud Player" Now Available for Roku Streaming Players"

. Mashable's Lauren Indvik on "EU Settles Price-Fixing Investigation with Apple, Publishers" (posted 3 days ago).
"Apple and four of the publishers -- that is, all but Penguin -- have agreed to terminate agency agreements that may have unfairly inflated the prices of e-books...The publishers have promised that retailers will have the freedom to discount e-books, subject to unidentified conditions, over the next two years."
  The settlement was accepted Thursday.

. Apple customers elated over Google Maps being available on iPhone again after much unhappiness with Apple Maps.

Note that owners of Kindle Fire HD and Basic Kindle Fire can also put Google Maps on their tablets (but on the Basic Kindle Fire (non-HD), this would depend on how much storage space is left since that tablet has less storage space and also less memory to handle processing of movement around complex maps).

Kindle News: Amazon buys 3D mapping startup NextUp. Will they use Yap? Also, KFire and social gaming.

Amazon closes deal to acquire UpNext, a 3D mapping startup.

Looking at the headlines, we're starting to lose focus on books!, but tablets are multi-function and, the 7" ones are, except for reading in sunlight, quite nice for reading, and of course enhanced e-books with multimedia capabilities, including related videos, are getting quite a lot of interest.

But when is a mapping program most used? On smartphones with GPS enabled and faster 3G streaming.  Amazon's probable interest in mobile phone technology has been mentioned before, due to wording in some of their Lab126 job ads.

And they did acquire  Yap (Oct 2010), with its voice-recognition technology, used for transcribing voicemails to text.  Sort of a clue?

The Yap Voicemail app had been available for the iPhone and was automated and offered for free.  When it was still available (before Amazon bought the company), anytime you got a message, a notification would pop up with the name of the caller and the beginning of the message.  None of these things will be wholly accurate but Yap's app allowed iPhone users to also play the message in the app to hear what was actually said, in case of some doubt.  The app included the abitility to return the call from the app.

gigaom's Ki Mae Heussner reports on the acquisition and does wonder if a future, more powerful Kindle Fire will have native mapping capabilites and/or if Amazon IS working on an Amazon smartphone.
I actually tether my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone to my Kindle Fire sometimes (giving the Kindle Fire WiFi capability) just to be able to examine maps better without losing my eyesight on a 4.3" screen.

He adds that no price has been mentioned but he's heard "that investors are getting a 5x return on the investment from 16 months ago" and that "the four-person company" will be off to Seattle to lead Amazon's core mapping effort.  UpNext covers 50 cities nationwide and for almost half of those cities, it offers enhanced details.  You can read what else they've been working on for their apps, at the gigom.com story.

Kindle Fire and possible social gaming feature
ZDNet's Sean Portnoy alerts us today to a story written by Bloomberg's Danielle Cucera on June 28, 2012, in which she said that Amazon "plans to release tools for digital-game makers by the end of July," according to a source who doesn't want to be identified in connection with plans that aren't public yet.  "Amazon is trying to woo developers to help it grab a bigger slice of the global social-gaming market..."
