Alerts: Today's Free App of the Day is a good one - Elements of Photography Pro, usually $3.50. Sale pricing on Fire TV and Fire HDX 7" tablet, as well as on a FireTV-tablet bundle

Alert to a very good free App of the Day for Android and all Kindle Fire tablets

It's Elements of Photography Pro by Arkenstone Technologies Pvt. Ltd. and, so far, has 25 reviews with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 (edited to add that a new app user just low-graded it because he thought it was a camera he could use).

This app also has integrated Google Translate and is available in 14 languages.]

At the right is a sample lesson screen
from the app.

At any rate, it should be useful to anyone wanting to understand how to use combinations of settings for any given photo situation.   Included are tips and a quiz section.

Quick alert for limited-time pricing on a couple of tablet and streaming tv options
Amazon is starting its limited time pricing deals as they approach Black Friday, and online stores seem to be starting earlier every year.

Unfortunately, Amazon is now showing only starting prices for tablet products and asking customers to choose added storage and/or Wireless options (WiFi or WiFi+3G) after adding to the cart.  However, it's a little less confusing than it was when they had the 'hover' chart of different pricing based on storage and connectivity options.

The Kindle Fire HDX 7" tablet, recently given a regular price of $199 (down from $229), to start, is being sold for a limited time at $179 to start.
And the Fire TV is available currently at a discounted price of $84 (down from $99).  There's no indication of expiration date for the sale, but this sold for a few days recently for that price and then was raised to 4.99

They are also drawing attention on the tablet product pages to a current bundled pricing for the FireTV with a Kindle Fire HDX 7" tablet with 16 GB of storage space.  There is NO option to add storage to this tablet when bundled with Fire TV.  I'm personally more comfortable with 32 GB of storage, but Amazon pushes its Cloud storage for apps you use less frequently and these are downloadable at any time.

At $259 for both, this allows the FireTV to have tablet content "mirrored" to your HDTV or even "flung" to it so that an Instant Prime movie starting on the tablet can be shown on just the HDTV, freeing up the tablet to be used for other things.
That means that a few people can enjoy the video on the TV, with the Amazon Cloud processing the stream and freeing up the tablet's processor.  This includes being able to use the feature of checking who's in the current scene being watched, seen via Amazon's X-Ray feature available when viewing Amazon Instant Video -- but the tablet can be used for books, games, and other apps, while the video is shown on the TV.

That's it for now, as I have to be gone until tomorrow, but I wanted to send the alerts out to anyone who might be interested in them.

Kindle Fire HDX and HD: Current Kindle Fire HDX's and HD/-Gen2 - Sale returned or is still on: $20 to $40 off 7" and 8.9" tablets for a 'limited time'

Kindle Fire HDX's
and current-generation HD are on sale again (originally as of April 14) for a limited time, Amazon says.

I see, on April 28, that the sale is either back on or has remained on sale since then.  (I've not been watching it but had reason to check it today.)

$20 off on the base HD model, $30 to $40 off on the HDX models.

I recommend the HDX's with MayDay video'd customer help and better processing power and storage.

Kindle Fire HDX 7"

Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"

Note: The 5W power adapter is now included with the tablet.

Just passing this on again, in case.

Kindle tips: Kindle basic and Paperwhite e-Ink readers on sale for one day, at $49 and $99, recent reviews. Free Android app of the day is a highly-rated educational one for kids (of maybe any age) - US geography

A one-day sale on these two e-Ink readers

(I don't know why it's only a one-day sale.)

Recent articles (February 2014) that might be of interest to people who are wondering if this is for them or not:

. USA Today - "E-book readers vs tablets: Which one is right for you?"

. Tapscape: Detailed review, titled, "Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2013) Review: the best ereader yet?"

. Business Today: Kindle Paperwhite Sixth Generation.  India got its Kindles much later than we did, so there are many recent reviews from there, as a result.

. In fact, Economic Times's review on Feb. 10 focuses on what the Paperwhite 2 has that the first Paperwhite doesn't, a good article for anyone wondering whether to go to the newer Paperwhite or not.  I didn't, as the first one is good enough for me, but have been tempted at times by the ability to flip to other pages while remaining on the same page underneath that flipping, along with the noticeably speedier response.

. Oxford University review, UK  - "New Kindle Paperwhite Makes e-Reading Easy"

Odd changing pricing
The Kindle Paperwhite with 3G is normally $189 and is showing that today.  But 2 days ago, when I was blogging the various thpes of Kindle book discounts, I saw it shown on the header as $209 - something I'd never seen before and I thought it was strange that Amazon would raise the normal price like that without saying anything in advance.  Today the price is back to $189 and shows as normal pricing again.

If interested in the 3G model and whether it could be worth that much more -- in this day of smartphone ownership, not so much, for my situation, but maybe so for those who either travel a lot to various locales outside the U.S., or just don't want to use smartphone data charges for downloading books and shopping Kindle store or for browsing Wikipedia on Free 3G 24/7 with the 3G model) -- there's a recent review titled, "So long, Paper. Is the new Kindle Paperwhite 3G a good travel companion? Two airports, two bumpy flights and two cities later, here’s what we felt."

Stack the States  - Free Android App of the Day

It has good customer reviews and looks to be a fun educational tool.  Might help people interviewed by Jimmy Kimmel's street interviewer :-)

From the Product description:
-  Voted Best Educational Game App - iEAR.org
- "Stack the States is a must have." - The iKids Blog
- "If you have children who are elementary school aged this is a fantastic educational app that’s also a hoot." - The iPhone Mom.com

Product Features  (from the app's product page)

  • Hundreds of unique questions
  • Interactive map and 50 state flash cards
  • Choose any of the 50 friendly-looking states as your avatar

For those who didn't see the last Kindle Fire sale blog article, here are some excerpts from December reviews.
ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes for Ziff-Davis's Hardware 2.0 area headlined an article that will surprise some but which reflects points made by several articles I cited in December:

"Why the Kindle Fire HDX is a far better tablet than the iPad"
' Summary: I used to think that the iPad was the king of the tablets, but not any more. It's time to whip the crown away from Apple and give it to its rightful holder – Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX.

...what Apple bought to market Amazon has improved upon dramatically. '

He spells out the usual large pricing difference points as you increase storage size, as anyone who knows how important multimedia files are to tablets will realize.  But it used to be that people assumed the iPad would be superior in capabilities and that the Kindle Fire offerings were just made with less-expensive materials.
Not so with the Yr 2013 line.  These currently set the standard for the combination of hardware and features now (although those who use Apple apps on their phones and love them will do well to get an Apple tablet to use those same apps on their tablet).  It's just that Apple is not keeping up because they don't feel they need to.

He continues:
' Side-by-side, the display on the Kindle Fire HDX blows away that of the iPad. Not only do colors look superior and more vivid, but also the brightness is better and the way blacks are handled – especially in video – is much more even. '

He also finds it easier to use outdoors, with less glare in his case, and goes on to give reasons for the other reasons he gives that include:
  "Super-fast Hardware
"Excellent WiFi range" (for him, it continues working well at the periphery of his system where the iPad starts having difficulties -- and this was true for other reviewers with even the previous HD models vs the Google Nexus tablets, although router-tablet settings sometimes need to be fine-tuned for the various brands and especially the newest techhnologies used by iPad Air, the latest Nexus and the HDX).
  "Superior on-screen keyboard"
  "Better Speakers"
"Better email and calendar apps" (that does surprise me)
"The Mayday button" (Help "in the palm of your hand"... "when you need it")

Note that he doesn't go into the Kindle Fire line's unique features as shown in previous articles here (and that includes especially useful parental controls and program features in general:
  1. Overview of New Features
  2. Things to Know about the new features

Those two blog articles have clarifications for some points that have puzzled some.

In another article, in January, the Salt Lake City Tribune carries Bree Fowler's story for The Associated Press today on "Review: Kindle FreeTime gives parents peace" -- it's a brief one but many aren't aware of how well thought out these features are relative to the other current tablet offerings.  Since AP articles are well-circulated of course, it'll be getting more play today.

Note #2 - The HDX 8.9" does not often go on sale, relative to the smaller ones.  It's decidedly lighter than my 7" HD tablet and is a joy.
My two favorite electronics (besides non-portable larger HDTV viewing) are the (1) Microsoft Surface Pro 2 laptop/tablet combo that runs ALL full Windows programs in the most speedy way I've ever experienced (but I won't link you to Amazon's 3rd party sellers for these as they are charging too much due to some shortages) and the (2) Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, which I recommend getting with at least 32GB storage.  It's great for both HD videos, including 16:9 format, magazines with reading-view and beautifully enlargeable images (as with the iPad), and two-page reading with larger fonts -- all while remaining very light now.

I use my phone's "Internet sharing" to give the HDX its 4G used as WiFi when I'm outside and wanting to use my HDX that has no LTE/4G cellular network feature, as I didn't get that model because I already have a good data plan that allows me to share the phone's 4G -- but those who have one of the now popular Family Sharing plans with AT&T or Verizon will find an additional tablet adds only $10 to a current data plan.  LTE/4G capability itself (for the fewer who want it) costs an add'l $100~ on the Kindle Fires and about $130 on the Apple iPad -- that's before you add a data plan for it.

  NEW reduced-priced AT&T Data plans.
One hitch is that they've added plans that include less Internet web data for those who don't need the larger plans.  I have a 4GB/month plan but found that although I use my phone to access email, enews, restaurant infoo and I also have a feature that allows me to share my phone's 4G with my tablets if I need to when no WiFi network is available, I actually use well under 500MB a month of 4G/LTE cellular network access.  That surprised me.  I don't watch movies when I'm out.  That helps.

NEWLY UPDATED Kindle reader app v4.1.1 for iOS
The Amazon Kindle Forum made an announcement on January 6 that the Kindle Reader for iPad, update v4.1 was ready.  However, there were many reports there (and at iTunes) that it was not working for many and caused crashes.  Some had uninstalled it and then re-installed it at iTunes and *sometimes* that had helped (and it did work well for some).

In that same announcement forum thread, users getting the v4.1.1 update this week say that, for them, it HAS fixed the problems with crashes, and large book collections are supported again by the new update and functioning well.  One glitch is that a downloaded book may not appear on the device quickly, but if you close the app and then re-open it, the book will show up.  Customers are much happier with this version.

You can read the customer reactions and advice to other customers at the Amazon Kindle Forum's Kindle for iPad update-announcement thread, which has the listing of enhancements.
For convenience, since the app is working well again, I'll add this info here now (emphae mine):
' Megan H. - Forum Moderator says:
(AMAZON) (AMAZON OFFICIAL)

We're pleased to announce the latest version of Kindle for iOS is now available in the Apple App Store.

Kindle for iOS version 4.1 brings new features to students (flashcards), multiple improvements to the reading experience based on customer feedback, and stability & performance improvements.

New to Students (US/Print Replica Textbooks Only)

* Flashcards for print replica textbooks: Students can now convert important terms from the X-Ray for Textbooks feature or their notes and highlights into flashcard sets for studying. Students can keep track of concepts or terms that have been mastered and those that need more practice, allowing them to improve their recall of the subject.

* Improved in-book search: Search in print replica textbooks is now faster and more powerful. Search terms based on the words in the book are suggested to students as they type. Results are almost instantaneous. Students will love the speed and convenience.
New to Readers

* Notebook Filters: Readers can now easily filter bookmarks, notes, highlights, and even specific colored highlights, making annotations much easier to find. Customers can also navigate directly to the annotated passages for context.

* Page Footers: Readers can now see page numbers or time left in book on the lower left-hand corner of the page. Readers can switch between page #, time left in book or a blank footer by simply tapping on the text or empty area. A setting is available to turn off the page footer if customers prefer.

* X-Ray Update: Readers who want to go deeper into the story will appreciate the updated experience. X-Ray characters and terms can now be sorted by relevance, alphabetically, or in order of appearance in the book.

* Dictionary Redesign: The Dictionary Interface has been updated for iOS7 and makes it easier for customers to switch between alternate language and purchased dictionaries.

* Stability and Performance Improvements

New to the Library - Collections multi edit capability

* Collections Refinements: From the library view, customers can now see which collections a book already belongs to and can add to or remove from multiple collections using multi edit. Readers will find it easier to manage their collections. '

ADDED NOTE: I found this added paragraph on the Amazon iPad app page (emphases mine).
' About the Latest Version of Kindle for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch
* Kindle for iOS 4.1 is optimized for OS 7.0
* Features Flashcards for Print Replica Textbooks on Kindle for iPad

Important: iPad, iPhone and iPod touch with iOS 6.0 or greater are able to download the latest version of the Kindle reading app.  Devices running iOS 5.0 will get an option to download the last compatible version. '

As I've mentioned recently - Even when there is no startling news, I respond to questions in the Comments areas of the blog entries -- and the Q&A entries are always shown in summary form and linked to, latest first, on the blog's right-hand column (used for information that's ongoing or for reference materials on topics of interest to many who visit the blog).  So, check "Latest Comments" (in the info/reference column on the the right side of the page whenever you're curious what people are asking and the responses made.
There is a lot about installing non-Amazon apps on the Kindle Fire as well as playing Flash on the HDX models.

That's it for now, as I need to get this off for the new sale that ends tonight.

Kindle News: 1-day sale: Basic Kindle eReader $49, Today-Only. Amazon's Prime shipping delivery before Christmas for orders thru' Dec 22. A couple of Amazon drone reactions. Kindle Fire HDX shares top of PC World list of Top 5 products for 2013.

ONE-Day Sale. $20 off the Basic Kindle and a delivery guarantee before Christmas for Prime purchases thru' the night of the 22nd.

The $49 price for the basic Kindle eReader is for TODAY Only (Tuesday), effective through midnight.  $20 off the Basic e-Ink Kindle - $49.00.

The e-Ink Basic Kindle is for basic e-book reading and it's NOT a touch screen device.  Any searches are done with an alphabetically-arranged keyboard which you navigate with a 5-way controller button, clicking it for each alpha character needed.  But it has good customer feedback from those who just want to read books and who don't take many notes or do many searches and it has features not found on e-Ink devices from other makers, especially for $49.
Furthermore, it has the physical side buttons for Previous and Next page, a feature some e-Ink eReader users miss.  (Me, I'd miss the normal touch keyboard, but many rarely want to type or do searches.)

Note that once you add a night light, it can still be $70 total for one, but it's still not close to the price of a Paperwhite 2 with built-in light.  It's lighter and if you don't need a night light for it, you get two of these eReaders for less than the cost of a Paperwhite 2 (which is currently $119).

Amazon Prime offers Free Shipping through Dec. 22.
Also announced today was Amazon's Free Holiday Shipping for Prime members through Sunday, December 22 for delivery before Christmas.  That's 5 days and nights remaining.
"[Prime] Customers can order as late as midnight EST, Sunday, Dec. 22, to receive delivery before Christmas with Free Two-Day Shipping"

Prime Program members do have free two-day shipping on most Amazon-sold and shipped orders year round, but the emphasis is that the packages will arrive before Christmas Day on Prime members' purchases made as late as Sunday night on the 22nd.
They draw attention to "incredible deals" still findable on the Top Holiday Deals page.

They add that "Amazon Prime members can order gifts as late as midnight EST on Sunday, Dec. 22, for free delivery before Christmas and the media release has a reminder that if you're not a Prime member you can sign up to take advantage of the free shipping offer by visiting Amazon's Prime page with detailed information and FAQs.

Also, they have a special price for ONE-day delivery for Prime members also, which I hadn't noticed, thinking it was $1 higher.  But that's available for $2.99 an order.

Speaking of fast delivery offers
Everyone's had fun with Jeff Bezos' announcement of a future Amazon drone delivery vehicle that will fly the apparently cluttered skies with your package for 30-minute delivery time if you live near an Amazon warehouse.  I saw a couple of fun takes on this that others might enjoy.   One muses on a type of item the drone might drop through mechanical error.

It was at least a way to get a lot of buzz on Amazon on Cyber Monday when "the futuristic concept got 200,000 Google searches that day (later, on Thursday, there were at least 2 million queries for Amazon)..."

  Privacy concerns
And there was a dire warning that was irony at its best from Google's Chairman, who wants a ban on Amazon's drones, according to a quote in The Guardian reported by CNN's Philip Elmer-DeWitt.

Also interesting is Apple's statement on the differences between its business model and that of other businesses when it comes to privacy concerns.

Kindle Fire HDX shares the top of PC World's list for "Best of 2013"
PC World's headline caught my eye because the Surface Pro 2, which is my newish and addicting laptop tablet and now main computer, shared top billing with the Kindle Fire HDX 7" tablet in the Top 5 products cited by them among 50 that they're highlighting.  But more on the reception of the HDX line in the next blog entry.

Kindle Fire HD 7" Tablet Sale: $40 off 'for a limited time' ... Today, $159 for 16GB and $189 for 32GB

Kindle Fire HD on sale again, this time at $40 off both 16GB & 32GB models

Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 7" tablet page is showing, wthout other announcements, a sale for a limited time.  $159 for the 16G model and $189 for the 32GB one (the latter is recommended if you want a lot of media files on it).

Remember that if you paid a higher price at Amazon itself within the last 30 days, you can ask Amazon Kindle Support for a credit (1-866-321-8851 or contact them this way).  A difference-credit has been the case for a few years, at least -- and of course that's somewhat based on the fact there is always a 30-day full refund offer on any new Kindle if you don't want it after all, as Amazon seems to feel very secure about its positives.

I'm going to include here some thoughts and info I wrote for the $30 off sale they had on June 30 for a limited time also, as most new readers won't have seen it and some might be interested.

As with the Kindle Fire HD, the production-halted Nook tablets do have a great display, with somewhat higher resolution than on the Kindle.   B&N doesn't, as Amazon does, allow straight downloading of any apps from any other sites though, including vendors' own sites.  So, any app you bought from Amazon.com for any other tablet you may have been using has to be re-purchased from Google Play.

But Google Store access on the Nook is a plus if you don't mind a lack of customer support compared with Amazon and don't care if you can't get apps from other app stores as can be done with the Kindle Fires.  Flash video sites like network broadcasting ones (series episodes, etc.) would require a user find a way to get the older Flash file on an Android tablet using OS v4.x because of the wall put up by B&N against that type of download.

  16 or 32 GB storage?
Although I tend to recommend lower-priced items as a rule, I recommend, for some, getting the 32-Gig-storage version for the $189 (normally $229) because multimedia files (graphics galore in complex apps and games, plus videos especially) are just very large and with 32GB you wouldn't need to worry often about what to swap out (to the Cloud) next before doing something else you want to do.

However, for the sale-priced $159 16 GB-storage model, if you've no interest in the 32-GB model for $189, the Cloud storage (free and unlimited for any Amazon digital purchases) is meant for holding apps, music, and books until you need them and then they're easily downloadable.

The Amazon PRIME program, as regular readers of the Amazon forums and this blog know, is a feature that's popular (and along with all this goes the X-Ray feature on many of their instant videos).

The free trial on any new Kindle Fire gives the owner an idea of whether or not to pay the $79/yr (equiv to $6.58/mo.) for the Prime program's free 2-day shipping of physical products and then the bonus features of free instant videos (thousands of older movies and tv series, the latter having some very popular just-ended season series which are now exclusive to Amazon).
Also included is the free borrowing of one Kindle book per calendar month from the Prime Lending Library, with no waiting time or due dates.

Amazon considered #1 "most desirable brand" in the U.S. market, per Clear's report this year
"According to a new “Brand Desire” study by M&C Saatchi’s brand consultancy division Clear, Amazon leads in the U.S. market as the most desirable brand.  Clear surveyed consumers in the U.S., U.K., and Australia about 678 different brands."

For those interested in the details or to see the reasons given:
' Per news.investors.com:
In the U.S., it interviewed 4,600 consumers about 245 familiar brands.
...
The Reese's brand, owned by Hershey (HSY), ranked No. 2, followed by Disney, owned by Walt Disney (DIS).
...
While Amazon kept up its allure, Apple (AAPL) lost some of its luster.  Its brand desirability dropped to No. 50 from No. 8 in 2012 as the brand wavered and lost focus, according to the report.

"Starting with an onslaught of too many products in the fall of 2012, the debacle of Maps' reliability, as well as 'function over feeling' branding, has affected its reputation for providing technology that truly matters," the report found."
[My note: That seems unduly harsh and likely not accurate, as survey wording is key.  As we all know, Apple is doing just fine.  What's ultimately important in our modern world is the bottom line, and its customers are devoted and, for any of the above factors, pretty forgiving, from what I've encountered.]
... "Amazon’s desirability stems from the great success of the Kindle Fire HD, a steady stream of perks for Amazon Prime members, an increased focus on its Prime Instant Video, and a continued stream of meaningful innovation such as Amazon Lockers.  Amazon has truly transformed from a marketplace for shopping to a digital hub for consumers to manage their lives,” states Clear in a press release via Investor’s Business Daily.

"However, Apple was still the top-rated brand in the British and Australian markets"

Will end this here, so I can get this one out earlier.

Kindle Fire HD 7" Sale: now $169 ($30 discount) "For a Limited Time." Amazon tops Saatchi's Clear survey as #1 desired brand in the U.S. Plus some thoughts on the Nook tablet situation.

Kindle Fire HD on sale again, this time at $169

I just happened to click on Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablet page to see if there was some kind of sale, and voila, there it was.

I stress this because lately there have been sales for recent holidays and now, possibly because B&N is ending production on its Nook HD tablets and dropping the prices to get their remaining Nook tablets to sell faster (as that has been the problem) as they try to find a partner who will take on the costs of producing these later.

B&N has therefore given up the attempt to have tablet owners use B&N's far less attractive (almost nil) tablet ecosystem.  They did give their customers access to the Google Play store after agreeing to Google's terms, consisting of many restrictions on use of B&N's own areas (which Amazon would not do, since theirs have been profitable), but the Nook tablets don't have
  . a camera for Skype
  . a built-in HDMI-out direct to TV
. the strong WiFi rep the Kindle Fire HD's have
. the Dolby Enhanced stereo speakers, louder and clearer than on laptops, nor
. the built-in web streaming viewer (for Flash on most popular websites)

As with the Kindle Fire HD, the Nook tablets do have a great display, with somewhat higher resolution than on the Kindle.   B&N doesn't, as Amazon does, allow straight downloading of any apps from any other sites though, including vendors' own sites.  But Google Play access would be good enough for most.

What happens when and if they find someone to produce Nook tablets later is anyone's guess.
A problem for B&N has always been adequate customer support, so they'll have to find a way to improve that with any models produced by whatever company is found to do that.

  16 or 32 GB storage?
Although I tend to recommend lower-priced items as a rule, I recommend, for some, getting the 32-Gig-storage version for the $199 (normally $229) because multimedia files (graphics galore in complex apps and games, plus videos especially) are just very large and with 32GB you won't need to worry often about what to swap out (to the Cloud) next before doing something else you want to do.

However, for the sale-priced $169 16 GB-storage model, the Cloud storage (free and unlimited for any Amazon digital purchases) is meant for holding apps, music, and books until you need them and then they're easily downloadable.

The Amazon PRIME program, as regular readers of the Amazon forums and this blog know, is a feature that's hard to beat (and along with all this goes the X-Ray feature on many of their instant videos).

Will end this here, as I'd like to make sure this gets out earlier.

One great thing happened  I've had to (because the blog is considered popular) deal with about 500 spam comments a day, with 300 caught by the Blogger spam detector, and then each day I had to go through, one by one, about 200 comments that were considered to be needing either approval or to be sent to Blogger's Spam folder.  That was exhausting.

They've finally fixed that problem very well, so I'll now have more time and energy to get more blog articles out.

Kindle Fire HD Sale returns for Father's Day, thru' June 15 - $20 off any Kindle Fire HD tablet. Some other Amazon specials.

Today's Amazon pages show a RETURN of the discount of $20 off any Kindle Fire HD tablet, this time through June 15, 2013 when using the same special promotional code.

See the information page with the title "Father's Day Sale."

The Promo Code DADSFIRE, used at checkout, will get you the $20 off any of these HD models.  Although it mentions that this discount with code is good through June 15, they add (as they did last time) "Offer good while supplies last," which is wording commonly seen in any of these time-limited offers.

That means:
The 16 GB Kindle Fire HD 7-inch tablet would start at $179 for this time period, when using the promo code.
The 32 GB Kindle Fire HD 7-inch tablet would start at $209 (the 32 GB one is my recommendation, due to the large size of multimedia files.

The models with 'Special Offers' shown on the opening lock screen
are always priced $15 lower than the ones without the special offers.

The 16 GB Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch model would start at $249.
The 32 GB Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch model would start at $279.

The 32 GB KFHD 8.9-inch tablet with 4G LTE cellular network access: $399.
The 64 GB KFHD 8.9-inch tablet with 4G LTE cellular network access: $479.

For comparison on pricing with the 4G LTE models,
The 32 GB Apple iPad 4G LTE tablet starts at $729 (vs the $399 KFire HD 4G LTE).

This is just another quick alert.  The promotional info page has a thumbnail for every model, so click on any for specific information on that model.

(I saw this announced by a gadget news site last night, but the Amazon pages had not changed to show this, so they apparently got advance word.)

NOTE: If you bought a Kindle Fire between June 9 and June 12,, Amazon tends to give credits if the price is reduced within 30 days of your purchase, so call 1-866-321-8851 or contact them at http://amzn.to/kcallme

In the meantime, Amazon is still in larger sale mode and pricing aggressively for
  .  Father's Day in general
. "Gifts for Dads & Grads in Electronics" through 6/17/13, and
. "June Audio Month" deals, up to 50% Off Select Items, through 6/30/13

Kindle Tips: MONDAY's Free Kindle Fire App of the Day is Fraction Calculator Plus. Lonely Planet has a sale on its PDF eBooks at $10 ea. + a free USA Kindle book. Sony's coming 13.3-inch eReader-Notepad.

Fraction Calculator Plus

It's only Sunday but this smart father-daughter duo has made good use of press-releases to promote their apps that are now very popular, and the Irish Examiner story on them tells us that for MONDAY, May 20, their Fraction Calculator Plus will be Amazon's Free App of the Day for the Kindle Fire (and other Android devices).  It's not a big savings, as the app is only $0.99, but every little bit...

And, it draws attention to their free "Calculator Plus" app, which is now the highest-rated app in all Amazon app categories out of a total of 83,981 apps at the App Store.  It's the bestseller in Europe as well, downloaded over 2.5 million times, and is also the most downloaded calculator on the Windows 8 platform.

The free version of the basic Calculator Plus app has 4,644 customer reviews as of today at an average rating of 4.8 stars.  Because it's free, it's ad-supported but if you want the version without ads, that's here.

The free-for-Monday Fraction Calculator Plus app has a keyboard layout for entering fractions and a large display that "shows fractions the way you write them."

According to the article, quilt makers tell them the fraction calculator has made their job easier.

USA Today added the duo's free basic Calculator Plus (with advanced features available when you swipe the memory keys aside) to their 25 essential Kindle Fire apps, and Amazon has pre-installed it in shop demos across the U.S.

  Unusual Features
According to the story and the Calculator Plus product description, a boon of that app is that it "remembers everything you calculate" and lets you review it anytime (even after you've quit the calculator to do something else), so that you don't need to retype the same calculation.  As with other decent calculator apps, you can just backspace to correct simple mistakes rather then having to start over.

The memory lets you "keep a running total you can actually see."

Lonely Planet
Outreach Educator and Anthropologist Guven Witteveen points us to Lonely Planet's current special on their 254 PDF eBooks.

ALL Lonely Planet PDF eBooks, usually $16 to $24+, are on sale, per their newsletter, for $10 until midnight 22nd May.

Enter DIG10 to get that pricing.

BEAR IN MIND, though, that several of these are available in Kindle Editions at Amazon for $9.99.  I'd much rather have a Kindle book version for the $10 where that's available.  However, on the ones that do cost more at Amazon and there are a lot of those, this can be a VERY good deal.

A free Lonely Planet Kindle book:
5 of USA's Best Trips: Our Favorite Themed Itineraries Across America (Regional Travel Guide)
This is a 708-page Kindle book, published August 1, 2011, with maps and with Text-to-Speech and X-Ray features enabled (but Lending, strangely, is not).

Sony's coming 13.3-inch digital paper notepad (and a flexible eInk eReader)
Friday, I tweeted Sony's announcement of a coming 13.3" flexible eInk reader, w/ some details and a link to the article on that.

Yesterday I saw a story with video of the device's notepad qualities.   Since it uses a plastic, rather than glass, display, it's much lighter than the norm.  The display is the new EInk Mobius panel.  They're testing it at three universities in Japan soon and expect thay can do a commercial release before the end of 2013.  Pricing will be key. Plastic Logic and IRex didn't fare well there.  Interesting video though!
