More on your libraries and Overdrive with Kindle

This is supplemental to "Where and how to find libraries using Overdrive + other info & photo guide."

About that Kindle book graphic at the left: When you arrive at your library, online, this is the image you'll want to click on, as it leads you to a set of e-books that are definitely available for the Kindle (as well as for other formats).

  At that group of e-books, you'll see the total number of loanable Kindle books there, for your county and any of its city or town libraries sharing what is available.  So far, at each library, the number of Kindle books is larger than the number of ePub books (used by the other online e-book stores).


I mentioned earlier the two methods of searching for libraries near you that partner with Overdrive.

Current search form (and results shown)
  The Current Search form is on the Overdrive Home page (Link: search.overdrive.com ), at the top left, and it covers searches for products (1st tab), libraries (2nd tab) and bookstores (3rd tab).

  While searching by zip code will narrow it down best, the search can be for a specific library name as well, or by city.

  Searching by zip code gets you a listing in what seems random order, but it's by the number of miles from your zipcode and covers a wide area.  There's no other information shown.  Clicking on a library name in the results list leads you directly to a page that shows the library's street address and the site of the overall library that covers it.
  There are 50 results per page and you can't search them on one page.


"Classic" search form (and results shown)
  The Classic Search form is given a text link at the Home page just above the top banner that displays the Current search form described above.  The pure-text link leads us to the Classic Search form page (Link: search.overdrive.com/classic/ ).

  With this one, you can specify the media type, in this case "eBook." This results-page is easier on the eyes, as it's normal text fonts that are black, vs the light blue, blobby results of the newer search form above.
  (Speaking of 'media,' Amazon announced today that they signed an Agreement with 20th Century Fox for video streaming.)

  Also, the Classic search results listing shows the mileage from the zip code you search on (which I find very helpful).  However, this one is sorted by the overall Group that the library belongs to and which determines how many Kindle books will be carried by the smaller library.

  There are glitches in the database. I found "El Cerrito" covered in Northern California Digital Library, which has 1,200 more books than the county library structure has.  However, when I got to the No. Calif. Digital Library website, I found that 'El Cerrito' is not listed as a participating library.  In fact, the Northern California Grouping shows a LOT of library and city names, while the actual OverDrive page for the Northern California Digital Library instead shows just a very small group of participating libraries.

  Also, I'm in the Northern California San Francisco area, and my listing of a 100-mile area shows Los Angeles Public Library, which is in Southern California, about 500 miles away, so you'll just need to double-check libraries you don't already know.


OVERDRIVE VIDEO ON HOW TO BROWSE, CKECKOUT, AND GET LIBRARY eBOOKS ON THE KINDLE
On September 22, Overdrive added a very useful video guide to getting library books on your Kindle at Overdrive libraries.  It's a good guide, but I couldn't help noticing that their example for a Lending Period choice was limited to 5 days!  They say that this depends on the library, of course.  Reports are that most are 7 to 21 days with either 7 or 14 days the more frequent default now.


WAIT LISTS
The Kindler Effect! is already in evidence.  In the various libraries I checked last night, almost every book was on a wait list, some with 20 or so people.  This would be book titles available for Kindles AND ePub readers.
I did read 2 brief interviews with librarians who said they were very happy to be able to do this and see the Kindle mob able to join in, though they didn't quite put it that way.

  He mentions 3G and doesn't seem limited to WiFi - If so, that would be because he pays the 3G bill to his carrier, as opposed to the Kindle-device 3G being paid to AT&T by Amazon.

Here We Go. Amazon press conference September 28 - UPDATE 2

This is it

Business Insider's Steve Kovach writes that Amazon will hold a press conference on September 28, at 10AM Eastern.

The last large press conference I remember was for the Kindle 2 which was then released February 2009 (and included unveiling the voice of 'Tom' in text to speech).

Not sure if they'll be unveiling only the rumored tablet. Maybe a Kindle 4 e-Ink also?

Where and how to find libraries using Overdrive + other info & photo guide - UPDATE3

ACCESSING THE LIBRARY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT

Overdrive Library resources are online 24/7.  Some of the libraries were ready for the Kindle this morning, but others had not been able to change their system processes yet, and Overdrive has said it'll take a few days to get all libraries in place.

In fact, their list of compatible devices this afternoon did not include the Kindle although it did yesterday -- but there was an error in the information seen yesterday, so they're probably just correcting the pages.  Getting 11,000~ libraries into place with the new sync'g systems at the same time has to be a daunting task.

On the SOFTWARE page, Overdrive does mention the Kindle now:
  "Kindle compatability...requires Kindle device or Kindle reading apps developed by Amazon."

To find libraries that are partners in the OverDrive network, visit search.overdrive.com which shows you a center TAB for "Library Search" right next to the default Title search.

  I still find that the "Classic" Overdrive Library-search (shown at top-left) is clearer as a dedicated search page.

Overdrive is said to be adding Kindle compatability to all of U.S. public and school libraries in its network, and all sites should be updated "within days."

  They add that "most eBooks already in a library's catalog are compatible with Kindle (Amazon does have more contemporary titles than most online stores).  Browse or search for "Kindle Book," check out a title, and then click "Get for Kindle."


LIBRARY EBOOK COLLECTIONS - QUALITY AND NUMBER OF BOOKS
The quality of e-book collections in public libraries varies quite a bit.  In the past, those accessing libraries via other e-Readers find that some either don't have many books they want or that the books they want are so in demand, they need to wait for months.  I'm seeing better experiences reported today, but those doing it this week are not encountering the same kind of competition they will, for the e-books, until all the libraries are ready and millions of Kindlers slowly learn about the new Kindle feature.


LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP
If there are no libraries with Overdrive in your area or the book collections are not as delicious as you'd like, you can become non-resident members of other libraries.  Here's a good listing of EBook Lending Libraries at Mobileread's Wiki area.

  Scroll down to the Limited Access USA section, which lists digital library collections by state, "many" of them hosted by Overdrive.  They mention some with "Non-Resident fees and the cost involved.

  When I did a Find on the page for "non-res," results indicated that you have to show up once in person even for non-resident cards.

  Those not mentioning "in person" requirement are: Florida's Orange County Library System offers one for $125/yr (yikes); Nevada's Reno - Washoe County, for $50/yr, and Pennsylvania's Free Library of Philadelphia, which offers a library card for out-of-state-residents for $35/year (libwww.freelibrary.org/register/getcard1.cfm ).  No in-person visit required in Philadelphia.

  Their collection, in July, had 4,844 ePub and 1,103 PDF rights-protected e-books.  Under Overdrive, these will be offered in Kindle format if Amazon has the book.

One experience reported by a forum member (KDD) with a deeper background in this:
"I just did this from our library's Overdrive site and it worked beautifully.  Though I have a Kindle myself, as part of my job at the library I had to learn how to use both the Nook and the Kindle.  Borrowing a book for my Kindle was soooo much easier than doing it for a Nook.  Ready to start reading my first Kindle library book."

  Daniel at the Amazon Kindle forums reported that the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has 12 copies of The Help with 148 people on the waiting list.

  Some glitches have been reported in a few cases but that's no surprise on the first day of a major change in complex interconnected systems.  There'll be changes made as they go.  Already, it was announced that today the New York Public Library reduced its DEFAULT lending period from 21 days to 14 days.

Update - Island Librarian Nancy Picchi found that the reduction made was only to the "default" lending period and that, during checkout, borrowers can use the drop-down menu to change the loan period from the new default of 14 days to 21 days.  That's a nice way to encourage faster return of e-books so that others don't have to wait as long.

UPDATE2 - At the forums, Mean Mr. Mustard wrote an intriguing set of numbers:

' Interesting.  In Salt Lake County Libraries, it shows 13,522 Kindle books, and 10,767 Adobe eBooks. '

  Successful downloading and synching last-page-read for a Kindle book was reported by someone using an iPhone.
  Some have already complained they see ads for other books while checking out.  However, Amazon is a business, not a non-profit agency, and they've a responsibility to shareholders too.  On the new Nook Touch, half of the Home screen of the device itself is reserved for showing books that the Nook owner might enjoy.  These companies have to think about the bottom line while offering features that are much requested by us.


UPDATE3 - TIP: for those with No WiFi access and you want the book sent to your Kindle (especially older Kindles) ... At some point after Overdrive has done the checkout and you're redirected to Amazon, you're asked where you'd like the loaned book sent.  With no WiFi capability, you'd ignore the Send to Kindle option and you'd choose TO download the book to your computer in order to do a USB cable transfer from the computer to your Kindle.

  You can just use the usb cable that is part of your Amazon power cord, to transfer the file to your Kindle device.

Be sure that it goes under the *"documents"* folder of the Kindle.

  Quicker Method
  If you can choose where your downloads go on your computer: With your Kindle attached through the USB connection and given the usual assigned drive letter ( like "f:" )...

  (the drive letter is just an example here) If Kindle is assigned f:, then you would download the book to f:\documents... That's all it would take.  But be sure the book is placed into the 'documents' folder of the Kindle.)

KINDLE LIBRARY LENDING IS HERE - It's Official today, at 11,000 libraries

Amazon's press release today boasts the following:

  "Kindle the only e-reader to deliver library books wirelessly; read on any Kindle or free Kindle app.
  Amazon's Whispersync technology automatically stores and synchronizes bookmarks, margin notes and highlights -- all available the next time you check out or buy the book."

Since this is fairly momentous for Amazon's Kindle customers, I'll quote the entire press release so you can see how they're presenting this today.  [Emphases in the quoted release are mine]

'SEATTLE, Sep 21, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
(NASDAQ: AMZN)-Amazon.com today announced that Kindle and Kindle app customers can now borrow Kindle books from more than 11,000 local libraries in the United States.  When a customer borrows a Kindle library book, they'll have all of the unique features they love about Kindle books, including Whispersync, which automatically synchronizes their margin notes, highlights and bookmarks, real page numbers, Facebook and Twitter integration, and more.  For more information about borrowing library books for your Kindle or free Kindle apps, go to www.amazon.com/kindle/publiclibraries.  To start checking out Kindle library books, visit your local library's website.

So, there it is ! It's actually here. I reported in an update to the previous blog article that Mobileread Forum posts from two members discussed downloading the library books with regular-Kindle-3 models using updated Kindle software version 3.3 (as opposed to the v3.1 for the regular Kindles), but a few Kindles remained at v3.1 and v3.2.1.

  If there is any change in the software being quietly aired to some Kindle 3 customers using both types of Kindle 3 models, it's not part of any general update on their Software page today which allows you to download the latest official versions.  I imagine downloading is no problem since that is normal, but non-crucial changes would involve checking for 3G downloads and preventing them as well as wording that 3G downloads won't be possible for this type of download and to use a USB transfer if WiFi access is not available.  The Kindles before Kindle 3 had 3G wireless with no WiFi module, so this will affect many who have been used to wireless downloads.  But this library lending is one feature upgrade that will include all Kindles for once, going back to Kindle Classic from 2007.

A special Kindle v3.3 Software version was used for public library access tests - Update

KINDLE SOFTWARE AND PUBLIC LIBRARY ACCESS


Amazon's info page for the latest Kindle 3 software still shows v3.1. My Kindle 3 (UK: K3) is on v3.1.

  The overall "Kindle Software Updates" page leads to no software version later than v3.1 for the Kindle 3's.

However, Kindle Special-Offers model comes with v3.2.


  However, Michael W. Perry of Inkling Books in Seattle just wrote to say that he was able to download a public library book, looked at his Kindle's Menu/Settings' bottom-right corner and found that the Kindle software version on his Kindle 3 is v3.3.  Thanks to Michael for the captured image.

 Kindle-Special Offers devices have been on v3.2.1 after an update for them, from v3.2 as delivered, but there is no software update page for that on the Amazon servers and v3.2 would have just come with that unit (which would monitor ads exposure etc.).  I could find no v3.3 discussed on any of the Mobileread forums, which would know about them.  Michael mentioned that he saw the update happen (boy reading under tree, which serves as both a screensaver image and a restart image except that there are messages that come with the latter).

  So, yes, they are likely using a further-updated software version, but since it was delivered without comment to a regular Kindle customer, it seems a beta at a quite late stage.

UPDATE: Two commenters from Seattle were still on v3.1 when they were able to get loan books. On Mobileread, two who downloaded from the Library last night wrote today they were upgraded to v3.3. On the Kindle Forum, someone with v3.1 was able to do it.

V3.3 is going to regular Kindles also ( I saw two of these last night) , so since library lending HAS started on Wednesday, 9/21, it probably adds checking for 3G downloads and has something about that not being possible for this type of download.

  Michael said that the loan period there is 21 days, and public-library due-dates are understood by the software.

  I also had thought that Amazon would have to do SOME software upgrading to interact with Overdrive and processes involving a Kindle customer hoping to borrow a book, in that there should be Help Error messages for those using Overdrive, especially when hoping to download via 3G if there was no WiFi in the area (or for the older Kindles, which use only cellular network 3G rather than include local WiFi network access).

  We heard earlier that the Kindle-SO updates for AmazonLocal coming "in a few weeks" would be PART of updates for Latest Gen Kindles.  That also doesn't mean that there wouldn't be separate udpates at the time for older Kindles as well.

  All Kindles will have access to the library, Amazon has said, but those depending on only 3G wireless access will have to download borrowed books by USB cable, as Amazon pays for the 3G access -- and there will be a flood of people downloading as often as possible from the library, in search of free books, for which Amazon won't see revenue to charge the expense against.  People downloading by wireless from smart phones pay for their own 3G data time.

  So, again, things seem to be moving along.

More encouraging news on Kindle and Public Library Lending - A live "Beta"

First, a Repeat of the header-entry from the blog article from early Sept. here:

MAYBE GOOD NEWS [Sept. 5 blog]

Leslie DeLoose, reference and community services librarian for the Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia, New York, writes a monthly column for The Daily News.  In today's edition, she included an encouraging statement:

' Early word is that Kindle owners will be able to borrow eBooks from the library in September.  This is on the library’s webpage and is administered through OverDrive.  Watch for details. '

That was not what I considered just a rumor, although many were wary, tired of being disappointed by so many rumors (mostly tablet) and Amazon appearing to take so long to roll things out this year.

  I gave more credence to that one.  As mentioned in that story, Overdrive CEO Steve Potash had dropped a strong hint at the Digipalooza event, a written summary spelling out "S E P T" as the first letter of each itemized point when asked when Kindle users would be able to download from overdrive.  What a tease.

  The website thisismynext.com (soon to be The Verge) noticed that Kindle forums were "aflutter" with a few users seeing that Kindle public library lending feature is LIVE in some areas, most of all in Seattle (home of Amazon).

  On Twitter, columbiacity tweeted to me Monday a.m. (but I was not online all day to read it) that:

' @kindleworld I notice this a.m. that Library eBooks for Kindle (beta) are live for Seattle and King County Public Libraries! '

And it is expanding through the night.

  Remember that when most were insisting that Amazon would have to go ePub for this, I explained that it had to be Amazon serving their Kindle ('Mobi') format files, when Kindlers requested library books, because of

  1) the 'seamless' wireless delivery promised to TheKindleChronicles in May 2011 by Amazon's Jay Marine (rather than the kludge of computer transfer with most library lending of ePub books),
  2) the by-"location" tracking of annotations, which Amazon does on its servers for its Kindle-formatted books, and
  3) the fact that Adobe DRM would NOT be involved?

  In April, I had described "How it would work" from writings online, including a key one by Karen Estrovich, Overdrive's manager for content sales, and the careful description she gave that made it clear to me.

Amazon has posted now how it will work, and it does match what I had described in April.
  Just to see how closely -- when it involved the controversy over any need for Amazon to do ePub format for this -- here's what I felt at the time, and it has more detail about some concerns that people had over library costs (for an additional format), how books would be identified for loaning, how they'd be put together and delivered, etc.

MY INTERPRETATION of this varies from others' I've seen
Caveat: It's only my interpretation and nothing more, but I think it has a good basis.
' Estrovich is writing to partners who have OverDrive-powered ‘Virtual Branch’ websites for the Overdrive library e-books program.  This is important to an understanding of what she's describing.

The existing collection of a partner's downloadable titles will be available to Kindle customers.

  When the partners add new ebooks to their collections available for loan, those titles will be available in Kindle- and ePUB formats for lending.  No one will have to, to my mind, convert from ePUB to Amazon's mobi format, as some have written -- for the reasons given below.

  This indicates strongly that the titles in Amazon Kindle/mobi format will be available from Amazon's servers directly once the requirements are met for the loan of a title to a Kindle customer.

  It's the only way Amazon would be able to (1) synchronize between the various Kindle/compatible devices and (2) back up annotations for a customer.  This would be done via matching the server's usual Amazon-formatted e-book and the copy on the customer's Kindle.

  The partners' libraries will not need to purchase any additional units as the partners are purchasing TITLES from a publisher via Overdrive, and the partners can decide which format a customer will get, depending on the customer selection of "destination" device.  Again, no conversion would be needed.

  Amazon wouldn't be using ePUB-formatted books that are transformed, nor would ePUB books be affected.

  Most important, this would mean the partners' existing copies and units would continue to work, as-is, totally unaffected.

  The reason is that the Kindle ebooks would be handled (and sync'd and backed up) by Amazon servers.  The delivery of the Kindle format books to Kindle customers would not affect the ePub books in the overall collection one iota.  The e-books that Overdrive partners offer will be available in both formats.

 There would still be DRM involved in the library loan but probably Amazon's DRM rather than Adobe's.  I think that Amazon resisted partially because they don't want to pay Adobe for their DRM process when they have their own (and apparently they don't want to switch to ePub).

  This would be a better solution than most had expected. '

True.  And Kindle forums everywhere have members trying this for their cities, with some finding Kindle books downloadable from their libraries although some downloads don't make it through.  This would be another testing session just before an official rollout, and we know that Latest Generation Kindles are getting a software upgrade "in a few weeks" (or earlier), in connection with "Special Offers" of the LivingSocial type going to Special-Offer Kindles (and maybe the option to receive these, with other Latest-gen Kindles).  But all Kindles are slated to be able to use Overdrive when it's all ready.
 It appears updated software is not needed to try this out, but maybe it'll be smoother.

  This is, from all I read, an unofficial "beta" ... quietly available for explorers to test and find any rougher areas and then Amazon would make adjustments for those.

  It won't be long, folks! And it'll be a more pain-free transfer of public library e-books to e-readers, overall, than we've seen in the past.  Best of all, well before December 31, after all.

  Soon, we'll deal with the availability of library books and the queues for them.

The Amazon AppStore for Android ABOUT to go International?

Thanks to an alert from Jesslyn, who had just seen news on Twitter, I got the news about the Amazon AppStore (for Android apps) quietly "going international," sort of -- but then the access stopped.

 Coincidentally, I had just downloaded and tried two Android apps from the Amazon store after getting an Entourage Pocket Edge dual screen epaper/LCD tablet that was 'dumped' by Woot! last week for $79, and it was impressive how the Amazon AppStore walks everyone through several phases of getting and using an Android app downloaded from there.  Many are free.

The oldest news story I saw on Google was from India where people reported the AppStore working and described the processes -- and then it suddenly stopped working.  So, androidos.in said that it "seemed like a test exercise, we hope to see official roll-out soon."

  In the meantime, Nate Hoffelder was blogging the many reports coming his way at The Digital Reader, with many new reports cited as it was happening, starting with that India news story, as early as 9:25 am PDT.  Reports of roll-out came from Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Spain, Latin America, Sweden -- and then a report similar to the stopping came from Greece also.

  Pretty obviously, testing is being done for a rollout, probably not too far off.

No word on the Kindle-Apps store though.  But it's been key that once the (first) Amazon Android Tablet is ready, it wouldn't make sense unless it could be used internationally, and it seems there is definite movement in that "area."
