Free Kindle Books - Reminders and recommended browsing 3/22/12

A reminder posting every few weeks for those new (and even olde) to this site

I run a reminder every so often, as there are many new visitors each day here who've never seen some of the subsets available for searching and who wouldn't know about the several ongoing Amazon Kindle deals.

  The picture used for this post is just symbolic of my discombobulation during a fun short vacation and in getting back in step with the world of e-books.

  For anyone with time, the Kindle Community Forums are especially helpful, with Kindle owners willing to help and very knowledgeable, so that you can find an answer 24/7 quite often, worldwide.

A Free city travel guide from an interesting series of shorter travel guides
The Purple Passport to Los Angeles. by Rebecca Salois, Emily Brands, and Rachel Levin, is a free Kindle book release today (Friday), though I don't know if it's for one day or two.

  Los Angeles isn't one of my own destinations in the near future, but the tips on visiting Hollywood look like fun.  The authors also have popular short guides with 'insider' tips to little-known places in London, by Jennifer Garcia-Alonso with Emily Brands (both are founders) and Rebecca Salois, and in Paris.  These are $0.99 each.

  In the forums, I've found some who did not know that with the Prime membership,  which gets you free 2-day shipping on almost all of Amazon's own items (not so much 3rd party Marketplace items),  you not only have access to about 15,000 no-add'l-cost streaming videos, you can also borrow one Kindle book per calendar month, from a choice of over 100,000 now, without dealing with waiting times or due-dates.

Quick Note + Free Kindle Books - Reminders and recommended browsing

Just a quick note

Have been somewhat under the weather, but things are clearing up and I'll be back at it tomorrow morning.

  I did take a little time to check out more closely the Wi-Drive and looked at what is needed for putting video on your Kindle Fire and also on the tiny Wi-Drive that can  smoothly stream video or display images and personal documents  to your Kindle Fire.  And of course it is very useful pocketable storage for images, documents, video, for transfer to the Kindle Fire as needed.  That the streaming or image and document access can be shared with two others is an unusual plus not possible with SD cards, though I'd like that feature too.

Kindle Tip Reminder re Tiny Fonts on web pages with Kindle Fire or Kindle Touch

READING FULL WEB PAGES WITH UNREADABLE TINY FONT ON A 6"-7" SCREEN

SO, here's to a good 2012 to all -- definitely it was good to take time off from the usual to relax and celebrate and to have a calendar system that makes us feel we have a new start :-)
  Welcome! to all the new Kindlers and visitors to this blog and Thanks to the regulars.

  In the blog article with many general tips on using the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire, I went into detail on dealing with web pages or with PDFs in which you can see the full page but which are usually unreadable in that format or screen width that is considerably smaller than our computer screens.

  I've found that many news-site reviewers still don't know about a valuable Android feature that is crucial to enjoyment of web pages on small devices (this applies to Android smartphones also), and of course those just using a device like the Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire won't tend to know about them either.

  So I'll focus on just this topic here, with all the new Kindle owners after the holidays and because those who did read the earlier article will probably find it difficult to remember where they may have read about tiny fonts on web pages and probably skipped the section anyway in an article that included many other tips.

While joining in discussions on the the Amazon Kindle Forums community where so many Kindle owners hang out to help other owners and get tips in return, I saw the following question and replied to it more briefly than I do in the blog article -- it's likely that a shorter answer can be more helpful, at least at first.

You can use an Android feature to pinch-zoom the font/text to a large size, to the point the paragraph of a column extends beyond the screen borders ... then double-tap the screen, and it will keep the large font while adjusting the text to the width of the screen and wrapping it appropriately.

SOMEtimes, the double-tap leads to the tiny version again, but if you double-tap once more, then it goes back up to the large font for text (which exceeded the boundaries you were at when you first double-tapped) but now adjusts the screen-wrap. It's called "re-flowing" the text and when it's done for a nicely large font, it is very nifty.

I explain this more at a blog article I wrote -- and some of the tips work for both the KTouch and the KFire.

Reminder: With both these units, but especially the Kindle Fire, a barely perceptible, very light press or tap will be more likely to activate touchscreen responses.


Added note to new Kindlers: Besides monitoring the Free Kindle Books guide with prepared search links to free Kindle books in more organized, smaller subsets:
be sure to check each day for Amazon's Kindle Daily Deal, which changes at midnight each day.  Unfortunately the Daily Deal is mostly U.S. for now.

SCRABBLE FOR KINDLE FIRE UPDATED TO ADD SINGLE-PLAYER MODE

  There have been 280 customer reviews of Scrabble for Kindle Fire and a full 80 of them are rated only 1-star because Electronic Arts did not provide a single-player mode at first.  What were they thinking?

  As of December 19, the single-player mode was added, and the latest reviews reflect this  (Link: amzn.to/kfscrabble ) and are very positive.  Since I used to be a Scrabble addict, this is bad news for me.  The updated Scrabble app is downloadable at no added charge, of course, for those who purchased it earlier.  (Link: amzn.to/kfscrabble-dl )  The price is $0.99.


Solitare v1.1.4 for Kindle Fire, by MobilityWare, has been updated for customizable designs and bug fixes, and is $0.00

Unusual Kindle Daily Deal today - Three history books by Stephen Ambrose
As the Amazon editors say,
  "Today only, three top-rated American history books from the inimitable historian Stephen E. Ambrose are just $1.99 each."  All were $9.99 Friday, have a discount of $8 each today (Saturday), and are then priced today at $1.99 each 80% off
 Here are the details and links to each of the 3 books.  Two of them have hundreds of reviews and are ranked at 4.5 stars, and the third one has 65 reviews averaging 4.3.



The flood of free Kindle books continues
Friday morning, brought 356 more newly released temporarily-free books after Thursday's 294 books, and members of the forum in which Joyce and, sometimes AnnieB, announce these alerts, are trying to help filter them by posting the titles (and links) for the ones that most interested each of them from all those listed.
And now, Saturday morning, we have another 326 books! and already the forum members have listed some that stood out for them.

  Many of the ones mentioned in June are still discounted.   While you're reading the message threads with links to the discounted Kindle books in them, Kindle customers will be adding new recommendations there for ones they've found while you're reading the thread.  I can check these daily and give a good starting point for the day.  It's been suggested (and I agree) that I remind people that on the first visit there they should go to Page 1 of the message thread (you can click on the number while there) and read the opening post by  RandomizeME, which includes

' This thread is NOT a book promotion thread for authors, or for people to post about indies. (And it's not for posting freebies either.) This thread is to post discounts and price drops that readers find for books from publishers." '

  Amazon made a separate forum for "Meet Our Authors" where authors can talk with customers about their books.
  Some here will just follow the discounted-books forum thread daily.

  On a couple of posts there, I saw that people had seen a couple of books drop even further right after they bought them, partly due to people noting that the two were lower at B&N's sales, and Amazon has given (with no problem, they say) $credits on those further drops in that short time.

ONGOING, NEW FREE KINDLE BOOKS - MANY TEMPORARILY FREE (mostly contemporary)
On the usual free Kindle books, the links in the box below will give you most of them with several sorting methods, and the listings are usually limited, to eliminate previews, chapters-only, and single short stories to save people time (although some of the lists linked to in the box will point to the most popular free Kindle books and you'll see some short-stories there), so they are doable when short on time.

  Some of the free contemporary Kindle books are growing by 30 to 70 free books per day and it's not practical to list them all, and I must say, there are free ones which aren't of the highest potential as seen in the writing just for the product descriptions!), but you can see those books in lists via the links-box at the bottom of this and other blog articles here and can decide quickly -- with Amazon summary product info -- which might be worth trying.

Tips for new Kindlers on Mother's Day. Free Kindle books. Battery use.

Since many will be opening new Kindles today, I thought I'd mention a couple of things that can help with finding free books, to give it a workout, and do a reminder on tips for getting the most out of the Kindle battery.

SPECIAL BOOK DEALS TODAY - temporary promos
The Amazon Kindle Forums often has message threads on discounted books that include some free books.

  Yesterday's included a tip on Kindle books from Rosettabooks that have tie-ins with movies, available at $0.00 today.  I've no idea for how long.  These include: A Passage to India, The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, and others.

  There are also some Dr. Vook TextVooks available for $0.00 today BUT BEWARE of any that are animated, with audio/video, as those features work ONLY on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod (Touch) -- they don't work on the Kindle or even the Kindle for PC app either.

    However, the NON-animated TextVooks are extremely "brief" (maybe 15-20 pages only) and said to be good 1/2-hour refreshers for some.  For $0, those may be worth a download for the Kindle.  I have to believe the product descriptions are thoroughly tongue-in-cheek, by a cheeky professor who says outfront that these are written by graduate students.  The "Did you know?" boxes can be fun, and the TextVooks are like more-filled-out outlines.

More from The Complete Works Collection
The blog entry just before this had to do with the Complete Works Collection offerings for $2.99.

  What I hadn't noticed among the sets was the Harvard Classics set, which my family actually had when I was growing up.  A lot of families did.  They must have been sold by radio or door to door.  This is quite a set though.

TIP 1 - for using Table of Contents to get to Chapters and back
I've read that some who jump to a chapter have felt that they must then page through until they can get the next chapter or another one they want.

  The trick is that if you want to go back to the LAST place you were when you 'jumped' by clicking a link, you just press the "Back" button and you're back where you were before the 'jump.'  This works for footnotes too, generally.

  For those who bought Shakespeare sets, some families might be interested in a not-free but much-praised Shakespeare GLOSSARY.  Warning: it's $12 but many feel it's well worth it while trying to read that old English :-)

BATTERY LIFE
The Kindle is known for its long battery life, but certain functions use a lot more battery power than others, and one involves a process that's a part of putting new books on your Kindle (UK: K3).

  Indexing - The Kindle allows you to do a Search on the entire device to find a key word or phrase that may occur in any book or magazine on the Kindle.

  In order to do that, the Kindle "indexes" all new text material that is placed on it, which means it makes lists of key words found in each so that they can be found when you decide to do a Search, either within a book (commonly done) or of all the text on the Kindle (less common and it takes awhile to get search results but this can be very useful).

  That indexing takes a LOT of battery life.  New Kindles seem to use a lot more juice than people had expected, and that's because they are usually getting a lot of new books on them, with a lot of indexing to be done.

  Sometimes, a book might not finish indexing for some reason, and that can cause slowdowns.
  TIP 2 - If you think the Kindle is being a bit slow and you want to check to see if a book has not completely finished indexing but should have completed (a day later, say), do a SEARCH on a nonsense word, such as "xwzq" and the search will end without finding that (normally!).  However, if a book has not completed indexing, you'll get a message to that effect.

  It shouldn't take more than an hour or 4 to do indexing, but I've seen that people put hundreds of books on right away, or even a thousand, in a couple of cases.  That will take quite a bit of time to index.

  If a book never finishes indexing (after a day or two), it probably became corrupted during a downloading session due to weak reception with the WiFi or 3G. I'd delete it and re-download it.

  TIP 3 - Plug in the charger when you're putting a LOT of books on it, because you can read while the device is charging.  That way, the indexing won't use battery power, and you won't be surprised by the battery being unusually low after you've added a great many books.  A few books, no big difference -- but as I say, some just download or transfer hundreds right away.

BATTERY ADVISORIES FROM KINDLE CUSTOMER SERVICE FORUM MESDAGES
I collected the ones that were made over a year ago, and they still hold.

  Essentially, no battery power is used for a screensaver/screensleeper or for any page of content, until something changes in that page. Kindle Team recommends you just let the Kindle go to sleep rather than power it down.  It takes more power to turn it on often, actually.

  TIP 4 - When you're through reading for a while, CLOSE the book by pressing the "Home" button.  This records the last-page you read so that you return to that page when you next open the book (or when you next open the book but you're using your smartphone which is sync'd with the Kindle - a nice feature).  Closing the book by pressing the "Home" button also saves, to a special file, your highlighting and notes, so it's important to do that.

  The type of battery in the Kindle shouldn't be brought down to Zero.  Amazon recommends you not let it get below 25% or so.  Leaving enough there prevents problems.  There's no harm in topping off, because there's no "memory" effect as with the older type of batteries.

Time out, post-flooding note

Missed a day of blogging yesterday due to a burst valve cover and flooding, and now for 4 days will have 7 of the machines at the left going full tilt 24 hours a day, to 'dehumidify' (meaning it acts as a furnace and is very hot, with each one having loud fans that sound together like 3 vacuum cleaners going full tilt).  The 2nd one is a partial pic, saving you the rest of the bathroom.

It was like a geyser.  But the worst is over. Carpeteting was lifted and removed.

Free Kindle books to go off Bestsellers list and onto own bestseller list

Amazon's been busy this weekend getting more changes in place, and a lot has happened in the one day I was not able to be here.  I'll keep them separate.

First, the Kindle books change that affects all of us, Free Kindle Books to go on own list, which I think was inevitable considering complaints that something offered for 'free' cannot be normally be said to be 'sold' and certainly not convincingly 'best'-selling.

Add that the Big5-Agency-model books priced higher than $9.99 almost surely are not selling as well as the Big5 had hoped and there will be pressure to highlight them, and then there's the need for Amazon to make book profits despite their battles with the Big5 to avoid the higher pricing.

So, this is a compromise that probably can work fairly well, because Amazon customers in the habit of looking for free non-classics (using my shortcut currently to get at the meat of these) would still be able to find those when they're on a list of their own.

  Publishers Weekly, quoted by L.A. Times, writes:

'...Amazon’s practice of including free downloads in its list of most popular Kindle titles. It will soon no longer be an issue.  A representative at the e-tailer has confirmed that the company will be splitting its Kindle bestseller list, creating one list for paid books and another for free titles.  The date for the switch is vague—the rep would only say it will happen in “a few weeks” '

I found it interesting that HarperCollins was quoted as thinking this MIGHT make free promos less effective while they have been the one of the Big5 most using the free-promo feature.

  I think that both lists will be used by customers and that the bestseller listing of free books will make it that much easier to find them for those who are especially interested in those.

  In fact, it could also mean that some people will now never even see the buyable Bestsellers because of this. Sometimes it's good to be careful what you (Big5) wish for.
