Kindle Tips: July's Monthly 100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or less - Editors' Choices + Free non-classics by publication date + discounted-book alerts.

JULY 2013's 100 Kindle Books deal, for $3.99 or less (See UK page below.)

I highlight the monthly deal at or near the beginning of the month for those who don't know about it or might not remember.

The July pricing for this group of 100 Kindle books ranges from $0.99 to $3.99, as usual for this monthly deal, and are "hand-selected" by Amazon's Editors each month.

What you'll see on that special monthly-deals page (UK version is here) are new for July 2013.

FREE KINDLE BOOKS (Non-classics) for July (and June)
I've updated the "Temporarily-free books -- Non-classics" search results to show free contemporary Kindle books for JULY, sorted by publication-date, as of July 1, 2013.  There are only a few shown on the first day or two of any month, and these include pre-orders due that month.  On the first day of the month, most of these are listed as "free preview" of whatever chapters chosen, some are short stories, and a few (overnight) not-entire-family-safe titles may show up.

Here, also, are the current Search results for still free Kindle non-classics, by publication date during the last month (June).

The Kindle Daily Deal page
for any given day now shows a lot of books since it includes children's books, a couple of genre-specific deals, and the monthly daily deals as well.

DISCOUNTED / Price Dropped Kindle eBooks II - the ongoing Kindle Forum message thread
This is an ongoing message thread in which Kindle owners share information on recent drops in pricing on specific Kindle books, often with some added info by the person posting it.

Here's a link to the thread, starting at a June 28 posting that includes some books that are still on sale July 1.
These tend to be very short-term discounts.

The better bargains still available (many from June 28 are no longer on sale) include:
1. Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and Winner, Nat'l Academy of Sciences Best Book Award, 2012 and on several other Best of Year lists;
2. Books by Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Atkinson
3. A Stolen Life: A Memoir, by Jaycee Dugard
However, any price-matching (B&N, Sony) for books by the large publishers will last only as long as the source sale price, usually 1-2 days, so there are a few that are no longer on sale on these pages.

The forum topic link is to a specific day to start, in this case, a book alert on June 28, as mentioned, but you can look at previous days or keep up with ongoing alerts after that, as Amazon keeps track of the last message# that you read, so that you can start from there next time.  While most of the better deals seem around $1.99-$4.99, there are many larger-publishing house deals included (primarily price-matching) that tend to end in a DAY, so you'd need to double-check the current pricing of ANY Kindle books that interest you to see if the discounts are still active.

Again, Kindle book prices are discounted for only a very short time, too often, and are promos, and that's another reason to watch the list.  Most of the large-publisher discounts last only one or two days even when they originate the discount.

DISCOUNTED / Price Dropped Kindle eBooks II - the ongoing Kindle Forum message thread
This is an ongoing message thread in which Kindle owners share information on recent drops in pricing on specific Kindle books, often with some added info by the person posting it.

Here's a link to the thread, starting at a May 29 posting that includes some books that are still on sale June 1.
These tend to be very short-term discounts.

The forum topic link is to a specific day to start, in this case, a book released 5/29, as mentioned, but you can look at previous days or keep up with ongoing alerts after that, as Amazon keeps track of the last message# that you read, so that you can start from there next time.  While most of the better deals seem around $1.99-$4.99, there are many larger-publishing house deals included that tend to end in a DAY, so you'd need to double-check the current pricing of ANY Kindle books that interest you to see if the discounts are still active.

I saw that Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith was noted for a usually-temporary price drop for May 29 and is still discounted today, June 1, so I've started the forum topic browse-link at that point.

The image here is of Farley Granger at age 80 when interviewed on stage at the Noir City Film Festival in Jan. 2006 and I took it from from the audience w/o flash.  I've also added a very shaky 14-second videoclip done right after that, as he answers a question about Director Nicholas Ray - I was surprised he still had a remarkably young voice for his age.
Kindle Editions of the blog can't show video, so if nostalgically curious about this, it can be seen on a desktop, tablet, or smart phone but it's not worth the trouble.  Pure nostalgia, poorly shot.

Again, Kindle book prices are discounted for only a very short time, too often, and are promos, and that's another reason to watch the list.  Most of the large-publisher discounts last only one or two days.

CURRENT AND ONGOING SPECIAL DEALS
  1. Spring Outlet Event deals
  2. Goldbox and Lightning deals
This Goldbox-page now also includes Best Deals
      and AmazonLocal Deals

Included on that page also, is a holdover sale on Canon cameras which I highlighted in a blog article March 11 and I'll include that here, for those who missed it, since those camera deals are extended now to April 27.
Here's the page for the Canon Powershot sale, while the "Best Deals" including other Canon cameras are seen here.

I was able to appreciate these creatures almost up close, with a newish pocket camera with a built-in 20X zoom (Canon SX260) that has excellent image stabilization and really good image quality for a camera that size and in that price range, and the zoom-in/out flexibility makes it my most-used everyday carry-camera now.  Recently $260 or more, it's $214 for the sale.

While it's not ideal (slower lens) for fast-moving children indoors, some have said, I've had good luck with it indoors, with moving jazz musicians, and in a short videoclip in that lighting.  The videoclip uses the zoom-in feature.

For those new to the camera, I recommend using the "Live" mode which is mostly automatic but lets you, with a press on the back control-wheel center button, adjust, live, the brightness/darkness of the final image and matches that to the LCD display image you see.  That also also lets you adjust color strength and a cool/warm tint to your preference on any shot.  Outside of that, I tend to like to use the Canon's spot-meter feature, but "Live" is good for a lot, and it has a night-time hand-held function that works really well.

Photography is a favorite hobby for me, and my Canon SX260 sets are at PBase -- If you want to view the larger-sized versions of the shots (1024 pixels wide instead of PBase's 800 pixels wide), click on "Original" under any single normal-sized photo to get the larger versions during the viewing session.

Even better: my cousin got this camera, a couple of weeks before going to ANTARCTICA, because of the easy zooming (she also brought her trusty Canon S95 but wound up using this one almost the entire time).
Her photo-sets, which some of us asked her to make public, as she does these just for family:
Antarctica I,   Antarctica II, and Antarctica III.  I was wow'd by what she saw and captured for us from that cruise.

For the very large versions of these, click on the top-right corner arrow of any photo.

Discounted / Price Dropped Kindle eBooks II - the ongoing Kindle Forum message thread
There is an ongoing message thread in which Kindle owners share information on recent drops in pricing on specific Kindle books, often with some added info by the person posting it.

Here's a link to the thread, starting at a Feb. 25 posting that includes some books still on sale Mar. 1.
Still discounted heavily today are highly-rated books from the larger publishers .   These tend to be very short-term discounts.
One still on sale at $1.99 is Nexus, by Ramez Naam, very positively reviewed by mainstream reviewers (Wired, Wall St. Journal, Booklist, Publishers Weekly) and highly rated in 151 customer reviews that average 4.8 of 5 stars.

The forum topic link I gave is to a specific day to start, in this case, 2/25, as mentioned, but you can look at previous days or keep up with ongoing alerts after that, as Amazon keeps track of the last message# that you read, so that you can start from there next time.  Most of the better deals seem around $1.99-$4.99 but there are many larger-publishing house deals included that tend to end in a DAY, so you'd need to double-check the current pricing of ANY Kindle books that interest you to see if the discounts are still active.

Again, prices are discounted for only a very short time, too often, and are promos, and that's another reason to watch the list.

February's Monthly 100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or less - Editors' Choices + Free non-classics by publication date + discounted-book alerts

FEBRUARY 2013's 100 Kindle Books deal, for $3.99 or less

I highlight the monthly deal at or near the beginning of the month for those who don't know about it or might not remember.

This group of 100 Kindle books are $1.99 to $3.99, as usual for this monthly deal, and are "hand-selected" by Amazon's Editors each month.

What you'll see on that special monthly-deals page (UK version is here) are new for February 2013.

The MyHabit area
Last month, there was a special January discount feature but I forgot to include the link.
MyHabit is a clothing section of the store that tends to be above my spend-grade, but the focus is on "coveted brands" and the free membership includes discounts up to 75% off, with both free and return shipping in the U.S., with international shipping to 50+ countries.
Each sale item has an expiration date of about one day to ~3 days.

Amazon has been expanding "Special Offers" in that if you don't want them on a lock screen but still want to check what's available from time to time, you can do that via a computer or mobile web browser or via an app.

FREE KINDLE BOOKS (Non-classics) for February (and January)
I've updated the "Temporarily-free books -- Non-classics" search results to show free contemporary Kindle books for FEBRUARY, sorted by publication-date, as of today, 2/1, 2013.  There are only a few shown on the first day of any month, and these include pre-orders due that month.  As ever, on the first day of the month, most of these are listed as "free preview" of whatever chapters chosen, some are short stories, and a few not-entire-family-safe titles may show up.

Here, also, are the current Search results for still free Kindle non-classics, by publication date during the last month (January).

The Kindle Daily Deal page
for any given day now shows a lot of books since it includes children's books, a couple of genre-specific deals, and the monthly daily deals as well.

Discounted / Price Dropped Kindle eBooks II - the ongoing Kindle Forum message thread
There is an ongoing message thread in which Kindle owners share information on recent drops in pricing on specific Kindle books, often with some added info by the person posting it.

Still discounted heavily today are the Mongoliad books, Fever Dream (Hachette), Game Change (HarperCollins) for the 26th.  These are very short-term discounts.

The link I gave is to a specific day to start, in this case, 1/26, as mentioned, but you can look at previous days or keep up with ongoing alerts after that, as Amazon keeps track of the last message# that you read, so that you can start from there next time.  Most of the better deals seem around $1.99-$4.99 but there are many larger-publishing house deals included that tend to end in a DAY, so you'd need to double-check the current pricing of any Kindle books that interest you to see if the discounts are still active.

January's Monthly 100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or less - Editors' Choices + Free non-classics by publication date + discounted-book alerts - CORRECTED!

"JANUARY 2013's 100 Kindle Books deal, for $3.99 or less"

I highlight the monthly deal at or near the beginning of the month for those who don't know about it or might not remember.  But then we just had a reminder a couple of days ago.

These new 100 Kindle books are $1.99 to $3.99, as usual for this monthly deal, and are "hand-selected" by Amazon's Editors each month.

What you'll see on that special monthly-deals page are new for January 2013.
And it's definitely an interesting list.

(Link: amzn.to/100kbooks-2to4)

Update - I just noticed that my screen capture of a portion of January deals caught the page when not all the prices had been dropped yet. [End of update]

NON-KINDLE reading for the day, held over, from last month for those who need or just enjoy a chuckle.  For those of you who've not ever read a police log for your area quite like this, the ongoing one for Arcata is definitely unique and you'll see why it has a larger than local following.  Highlights this month include the "poop monster" and another entity with "ghastly equipment."

Out with the old deals, In with the new...
Amazon now has a New Year Resolutions page with emphasis on the "New You" and showing "Up to 50% off select Schwinn and Nautilus Exercise Bikes" + a small typo in that ad.

Some of the featured products don't seem to be discounted, but there's a section on 50% off fitness-ready clothing and shoes.

"The 4-Hour Chef" loses some $weight.
Amazon has a promo on the hardcover version of The 4-Hour Chef, at 40% off the regular price of $35, for $21.   It has 1,006 customer reviews as of today, with an average rating of 4.6.  I am not a cook, minus the 'r' - and I've not paid attention here, but it looks pretty large.
The Kindle Edition is $9.95 and I've no idea if the regular price is higher.

The MyHabit area has "New Year's Resolution Events" at up to 60% Off
This is a clothing section of the store that tends to be above my spend-grade, but the focus is on "coveted brands" and the free membership includes discounts up to 60% off, with both free and return shipping in the U.s., with international shipping to 50+ countries.

UPDATE - I should never put together a blog late in the night... The next section has been fixed, so it's January that shows up (with December as the past one).
FREE KINDLE BOOKS (Non-classics) for January (and December)
In the meantime, I've updated the "Temporarily-free books -- Non-classics" search results to show free contemporary Kindle books for JANUARY, sorted by publication-date, as of today, 1/1, 2013.  There are only a few shown on the first day of any month, and these include pre-orders for January, of course.  As ever, on the first day of the month, most are listed as "free preview" of whatever chapters chosen, and a few not-entire-family-safe titles will show up.

Almost everything discounted on December 30 has already had the price set back to normal.  So I've started with Neil Gaiman's "Odd and the Frost Giants" which at the momen is $1.99

Dec's 100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or less - Editors' Choices + Free non-classics by publication date + discounted-book alerts

"DECEMBER 2012's 100 Kindle Books deal, for $3.99 or less"

I highlight the monthly deal at or near the beginning of the month for those who don't know about it or might not remember.

These 100 Kindle books are $1.99 to $3.99 and are "hand-selected" by Amazon's Editors each month.

What you'll see on that special monthly-deals page are the new ones for December 2012.

(Link: amzn.to/100kbooks-2to4)

NON-KINDLE reading for the day, for those who need or just enjoy a chuckle.  I don't know if any of you have ever read a police log for your area, but this ongoing one for Arcata is definitely unique and you'll see why it has a larger than local following.

Tweet Tunnel
For any who follow Twitter and also my add'l info bits that aren't generally blogged but tweeted there, I found recently that older ones are organized over time by a site called "Tweet Tunnel" that does this for the now 500 million noisy birds.  Here's my recent history of tweeted info, nicely organized; they do a nice job.  You can click on any "inReplyTo" links to follow a thread or to see what a comment was about.  Without images, it's considerably faster than previous attempts at this type of history.  And they're said to be able to show/download past tweets soon (why?).  To check yours, use the searchbox on the same page.

Cyber Monday Deals Week continues at Amazon today
For another day, Amazon continues its Cyber Monday Week deals page.
As of this morning (Dec. 1), their page announces they'll begin their Top Holiday Deals tomorrow.

FREE KINDLE BOOKS (Non-classics) for December (and November)
In the meantime, I've updated the "Temporarily-free books -- Non-classics" search results to show free contemporary Kindle books for DECEMBER, sorted by publication-date, as of today, 12/1.  There are only a few shown on the first day of any month, and these include pre-orders for December, of course.  As ever, on the first day of the month, most are listed as "free preview" of whatever chapters chosen.

Here are the current Search results for free Kindle non-classics, by publication date for November.

Today's Kindle Daily Deal, for December 1, Saturday only, is Pines, by Blake Crouch.  Inspired, at age 12, by seeing the television series, Twin Peaks (ABC, 1990), a "quirky show about a creepy town with damn fine coffee and brilliant cherry pie, where nothing was as it seemed" his Pines is about a Secret Service agent who comes to a scenic town to recover two federal agents who went missing a month earlier, but within minutes of his arrival, he's involved in a bad car accident and wakes up in a hospital, with no ID, no cell phone, no briefcase, and no money -- and, for some reason, unable to reach his boss or his wife.

The 'Starred' Booklist review by Stacy Alesi says, "The suspense builds to an almost unbearable point, culminating with a twist that ratchets it up even further. Fans of Stephen King, Peter Straub and F. Paul Wilson will appreciate this genre-bending, completely riveting thrill ride, which mixes suspense, horror, science fiction and dystopian nightmare all rolled up into one unputdownable book.

It has 467 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.1 stars.
It's $1.99 for today (Saturday) only. 80% off
Their Kindle Young Readers Daily Deal is "Gooney Bird and the Room Mother" - by Lois Lowry (author) and Middy Thomas (Illustrator).

Discounted / Price Dropped Kindle eBooks II - the ongoing Kindle Forum message thread
There is an ongoing message thread in which Kindle owners share information on recent drops in pricing on specific Kindle books, often with some added info by the person posting it.

Here's a link to the thread starting from a few days ago that includes some books still on sale Dec. 1.

The link I gave is to a specific day to start, in this case, 11/28, mid-point, but you can look at previous days or keep up with ongoing alerts after that, as Amazon keeps track of the last message# that you read, so that you can start from there next time.  Most of the better deals seem around $2.99-$3.99 but I saw that there are quite a few good deals during the holidays of course.  On the other hand, there are Hachette deals included that ended in a DAY, so you need to double-check the current pricing of any Kindle books that interest you to see if the discounts are still active.

I heard of one small new Kindle book released November 16, "Portrait of a Hero," by Randall H. Miller, with an initial discounted price of $0.99 for the holidays, which is about "Lieutenant Colonel Truman Bishop Ransom who resigned the presidency of Norwich University (the nation’s oldest private military college and birthplace of the citizen soldier) to lead the 9th U.S. Infantry in the Mexican-American War."
Sounds interesting.  All I know of the author and his book is that he's an engaging, long-time reader of the blog and we share a mutual enthusiasm for the Beam N Read light, which I no longer need for my (latest) Kindle reader, because it's a Paperwhite, but which I still tend to wear at night for general use.

Prices are discounted for only a very short time, too often, and are promos, and that's another reason to watch the list.
