FORUM TIPS FOR TODAY

Although today's are mainly for the Kindle Fire line (the 7" still on $30 off sale), I'll include some Paperwhite tips later.
  The Restart reminder works for all Kindle e-readers and tablets.

Just a couple of tips for today, one that was written from a conversation by a forum member with Kindle support yesterday (My additions are in brackets] and one I wrote about how to play personal videos from your camera (and these come in many formats).
1. Getting the Time to Read function back if it disappears
This one is from J.Jay

' I contacted support as Pineapple suggested.
After a few tries, we were able to fix the problem on my Kindle Fire HD 7".
We had to deregister my device from my account and then re-register it.
It worked! The steps are below:
- From the Kindle home screen, pull down [Swipe down] the [top] status bar and tap "More"
- Tap "My Account" and tap "Deregister"

- Hold the power button for 20 seconds.
- [After releasing the button, wait 5 seconds, press and this time quickly release the Power button, to]
   turn the Kindle back on [and wait while it reconfigures memory.]
- Close out the Getting Started screens and return to the home screen

- From the Kindle home screen, pull down the top status bar again and tap "More"
- Tap "My Account" and tap "Register"

- Tap "Books" and then "Cloud" [to get a new copy of the book from your Cloud storage area]
- Tap the book [title] to re-download it.  
   It should load up where you left off

- Tap the lower left corner until the "time to read" comes up.
  It will probably say "Learning reading speed..."

Worked like a charm. '

Unfortunately, some have found this works only for a few days for them, though they don't report whether or not they're on the latest software update version x.4.3...(7.4.3 in the case of the 7" tablet).  If this still happens for those with the latest software version, Amazon will need to fix the glitch.


2. If Netflix and Amazon Instant Video both work well but camera videos don't, although personal videos had before

I especially recommmend getting the BSPlayer app at the appstore.  There's a free version that's fine.  It's the most reliable I've found and fixes even audio problems I've had on my several camera video formats that other good players were not able to play correctly.

3. Sudden malfuctioning app or Web connection problem

  For apps that may not be functioning well, although they had before... plus the Simple Restart when needed
  Swipe down the top status bar and tap on "More"
  Tap "Applications" and then "Installed Applications"
  Scroll down to the misbehaving app and tap that
  Go down a bit to where you see the option to Clear Cache
   (That's temporary data kept from the recent session.)
  Tap on the Clear Cache to clear it
  If there's an option at top left to Force stop the app, tap it to stop the app.
  Press the back arrow at the far-right a few times or just tap the HOME icon at right-bottom.


  If using the built in 'Silk' Web browser and experiencing any problems
  Exit Web or Power Off if necessary.
  After powering back up, I'd go through the steps for number 3 above, for the 'Silk' Web app.

  Re the Silk Web app settings in general while Web'g
  Press the || on the right side to expose the Menu-rectangle...
  Tap on that Menu to get Web 'Settings' and make sure that near the bottom of the Settings page under 'Advanced' section, you've checked the box to enable 'javascript' ...

  I'd also definitely choose the Clear the Cache option there, if any web problems are recent and sudden.

There's no need to reset factory defaults, which should only be a last-option choice done along with a Kindle Support rep for guidance.

  Simple restart to clear up any unusual problems
To do the simple restart that is like a computer soft-reboot,
  Press the tablet's power button, holding it in for 20 seconds, then release.
  After a couple of seconds, press the power button again and quickly release it.
  Go away and after some minutes it should have reset the system memory, which normally will fix recently-appearing probs.

FOLLOW-UPS ON RECENT KINDLE SOFTWARE UPDATES: Touch - v5.3.2.1;

Q: "After the software update, my Collections are no longer listed.  The books are just listed in abc order.  So, I tried to reenter a title such as Suspense, and it says the title is currently in use and to enter a different title.  Does anyone know what I should do?"

A:   Amazon made an odd decision there.  Normally, when you tap 'Recent' or 'Title' or 'Author' sorting options while choosing "Books" to view on the Home Screen, you'd expect to be able to see another option, which would be 'Collections' -- but that option doesn't show up when you have selected only "Books" (where they SHOULD show up).

  You have to lightly tap 'Books' (or 'Periodicals,' 'Audible,' 'Docs' etc.) below the top row and choose "My Items" instead before you can get the 'Collections' choice for sorting now.  It may be due to Amazon's defining 'Books' as Kindle Books only, while "My Items" includes Docs, etc.


Recent Kindle Fire updates, x.3.0
  Enhanced Kindle Editions with Audio/Video feature that came with the recent Kindle Fire updates.
  There is an added step to see these, if you've downloaded the book previously.

Q: "How do you get the audio/vidio to work?"

A: People are finding out that they need to remove any current copy of an Enhanced Kindle Edition from their Kindle Fire (2nd gen, 7" HD and 8.9" HD) and then RE-download the title previously purchased with audio and video, before they can access the audio/video portions of the book with the Kindle Fire.

  Hyperion offered, In Sept. 2011, the Audio/Video Edition of the Jacqueline Kennedy Historic Conversations, for $10 rather than the regular $16.49 price, but it was usable only on "iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touch devices" (and it's still described that way despite the software updates).

  Nevertheless, at the time, figuring Amazon would make this available for their own tablets someday, I bought the enhanced edition at that price (it was and still is available without the audio/video for $10 too,  but why not get the one with more features, for later?)

  So, this week I downloaded the never-read Kindle book from my Cloud, and sure enough the audio and video features work very well on the Kindle Fire HD 7" and 8.9" tablets I have.

  Bear in mind that that the Enhanced Edition will take up a LOT of tablet storage space.
  For instance, the Kennedy Conversations Edition WITHOUT audio/video (readable text and photos only) is s 5 Meg file, which already (because it has photos) is over 5 times larger than an average novel.

    The Audio/Video Edition, however, is a 500 Megabyte file, 100 times larger, and essentially HALF a GIG.  The basic Kindle Fire HD 7" tablet can store 16 Gigs but a few gigs are used for system files.  I bought the 32G model and 5 gigs are set aside for system files.
  If I'd bought only the 16G basic Kindle Fire, I'd have no storage space left by now, as I have only 16 gigs remaining on my 32G tablet.

  Of course we can always remove files from a device, and any Kindle purchases (and personal documents we've sent to our "Personal Documents" storage space (via EMail) are re-downloadable at any time, when we actually want or need to read them.

  I tend to keep a lot of favorite Youtube video files on mine, but there's no reason that I need to have as many books ON the device as I do.

  BONUS Tip - Here are a few FREE Enhanced Audio/Video Kindle Books (from time to time) that you can try, via this special link.


Q: "Why does Time to Read (the remaining pages of a chapter or book) seem to work only sporadically if at all?

A: 1. You need to be on WiFi for this to work, when reading a book, as the servers keep track of time taken to read, and they calculate time remaining based on that.  This information, they say, is not retrieved for the server but kept on the Kindle device.  Some people like to know, when they need to sleep or leave, how much time it might take to finish the chapter (or the next one).

    2. Also, when you're seeing location number (and page number for books that have this) and the timeline bar at the bottom of a screen, you can get the other options (Time to Read, Page No. only, Location No. only) by lightly tapping just above the bottom timeline bar.

  Then tap whatever NON-timeline-bar option is showing at bottom left to get the other options.
  If you want the timeline bar back, lightly tap just above the normal bottom-bar area, near the center.

  Note: When the timeline bar is showing, don't touch the bar itself, as it changes where you are in the book if you move it at all (which is too easy to do).

I suggest contacting kindle customer service, Scott. My kindle hd 8.9 was fixed in less than 15 minutes. He had me go to another power outlet & plug it in, then wait a couple of minutes before depressing the on button & hold it down for 30 seconds. After that, He asked me to wait 20 seconds & repeat the process. I did this 3 times, at his request; then he told me to remove it from the charger & power it back up (holding the power button for less than 15 seconds) & voila, it magically came back to life with no problems. I did get the update & that is what caused the problem, but it works fine now! I hope this helps!

  [I turned that one off from the start.  I don't want my tablet to be checking email all the time.

  I also make sure that my applications don't automatically update. (See Settings / Applications)  I just don't want that activity going on all the time, especially when I don't use most of my apps that much, so I don't need the constant updating that would occur.]

Are you actually saying that gathering info on app use and taking it back to the server does not use battery life - I don't mean extraordinary use but any WiFi activity does use battery and we don't know how often you're taking that info.

I had the battery drain issue (Kindle Fire HD 8.9" wifi), and now it is resolved.  Not sure exactly what fixed it, but here's what I did:
1) I turned off "Collect App Usage Data"  (I suspect it was this, not sure)
2) I [then] held down the power key for 20 seconds until my Kindle shut itself off.  Then, turned it back on.  Previously I had tried shutting it down multiple times the "normal" way without success.

For those with battery drain problems, you might try turning off location services.  Once turned on by an app that used it, it was THE main reason my battery was draining.  It seems to not allow the kindle to sleep. This needs to be fixed obviously, but turning off location services for now is something you might try to see if it helps in your case as well.

[That's another setting I do turn Off unless an app I am using REALLY needs it for something I want.]

[I also do not have Weather apps active.   The constant use of battery for some weather apps may be worth it to some, but not to me.] '

More tips on using the Kindle Fire HD 7" tablet: Global Favorites, Now exclude webpages from Carousel. FixIt teardown of KFHD7, Cloud player streams in UK, Germany, France today, kFireHd rooted

That's the Carousel at the left, with the "Most Recent" item accessed showing first -  whether it's a book, a webpage, an app, music, a game, or some other category.

Before I begin, please note that a LIGHTER tap or press is still usually more effective with the Kindle Fire HD, just as as it was with the earlier model.

  When I forget this (because the Kindle Fire HD is more flexible and is generally more responsive to a harder touch than the first KFire was), sometimes I'll get no response from touching a Carousel icon.
  Then I realize I'm pressing too hard for the touch settings of this tablet (which someone has said blocks something) and I'll change to a very light tap or press (barely even touching the glass sometimes) and that works immediately.

With the first Kindle Fire, an Amazon Kindle forum thread focused on trying that lighter touch and it worked better for almost everyone.   The lighter tap is not as needed now, but it'll help.
  Also, the keyboard on the new KFire HD is the most typo-free one I've experienced in small-form devices -- the calibration seems very precise and responsive.

Amazon's purchasing suggestions and the Favorites feature that overrides that
  I've been using the new 7" Kindle Fire HD in Landscape mode for almost everything  -- for video and more readable webpages especially.  I had not seen, in more than a day of using it, the "Other customers bought" suggestions which show up, in portrait or vertical mode, at the bottom of the Home page where the book shelves used to be, a decision which hasn't met with the happiest noises in the forums.
 In Landscape mode, though, they don't appear.

  In portrait modes, they appear in what is also the important display area for what Amazon calls "Favorites."

  Some had worried that 'Favorites' were gone, in favor of marketing.  But they're not.

  Once you've made your Favorites by adding each from the Carousel into that area (and you can move each of these around within the Favorites area as was possible with the older Kindle Fire "shelves"), you can then click the large star icon that is accessible on almost any page, unless the bottom or sidebar menu is not showing.

 Tapping on the star icon brings up the items you designated as Favorites, which do display in a way similar to the old shelf-look but with no 'wood.'

  If no basic Menu line of options is showing on a page, you can lightly tap the "||" (or horizontal version of those double-lines) seen at the right edge or bottom of the tablet.   That brings up the basic Menu, which is often hidden in order to show full-screen material. (I really like the programmers' choice there, with less loss of screen 'real estate' for the focus of actual interest, but newcomers will tend to wonder what to do next.)

The usual large star used to bring up global tablet-favorites will be at upper or bottom right.  Someone in the forums mentioned that he "favorited" Wikipedia, and while reading a book (or using another tablet activity), he can tap the center area of the book page, say, to bring up the many options, and then tap the Star to see the  Favorites-display  without interrupting his activity otherwise, and from that he calls up Wikipedia.

(When reading a book, that's not the optimal way though.  If interested in a word or phrase on a book page, you can long-press it and get options to search the book, Wikipedia, or the Web for more info on it.)

  These are Favorites you specify or save for *global* use, in that you can save a webpage not just as a browser bookmark but as an overall 'Favorite' for the tablet, period, and do the same for any app or book, etc.

  You can access that Favorite item from just about anyplace, even while in the video or app areas -- whether it's to check a book or webpage for something or to check a personal doc or the weather.  It's browser-independent, and serves as a sort-of task switcher.

For those who haven't used a Kindle Fire before:
  You might find yourself at a screen that you're finished but with no idea of how to close it or go to something you actually want to see next.
  If the menu isn't showing, tap the small double-line ( || ) to bring the menu up.  Then tap the Home icon.
  Since Home is the starting place or where you can get your bearings :-),
the Home icon will be the first item on the horizontal lower status line or at the bottom of the vertical sidebar.

  While reading a book, pressing Home in the book's reader menu will close the book and record or save the last-page you read and any notes and highlights that aren't saved yet for sync'g with a myriad other devices and with the backup-servers.  I think this is one reason for a small delay when ending a session.

  (If you approve Amazon's ongoing backup of your annotations, they're placed on your personal Amazon annotations web page with each book and are copyable and printable.)

MAKING a Favorite
When on a page or app that you want to globally add to Favorites for the tablet and not just for a webpage, you can exit the page by tapping the Menu and pressing Home.

At that point, the Carousel at the top will have the "Most Recent" activity at the far left -- the first one in the Carousel.  That helps identify where you were, for one thing, if you want to make a global Favorite.

  To move it into Favorites, you lightly long-press it and choose to "Add to Favorites."

  Other options shown on the long press are to "Remove from Carousel" or "Remove from Device"  (With any removal of an item from the tablet, a copy would remain in your Amazon server backup area if you got it from them, in case you want to read or use it again someday. Removing items not being used frees up storage space.

Option to NOT display webpages as "most recent page" in Carousel
Because so many have objected to their last activity being displayed to anyone who might be in the vicinity of your tablet when you're using it, there is now an option to not display webpages as the 'most recent' page but that's an Amazon Silk browser setting, found under the Web browser menu, and titled "Silk Settings, where you see the setting under "Saved Data."

  The setting is "Display most recent page in Carousel" and can be checked or not.  That's in answer to people who didn't like that others around them could easily see which webpages they'd been on last and asked Amazon for a way to exclude it from the Carousel listing.

  There've been times I didn't want the last webpage prominently included (mainly because it can be ugly looking, often much bigger than other Carousel items).  On the other hand, I like being able to add certain really useful webpages as global Favorites that I can call from anywhere, and the Carousel is where it's done, so I keep it as shown.

Trending feature
Another batch of info pages shown under the Carousel when the area is not filled with Favorites, is "Trending" -- what I've seen there are news pages that are not the usual headliners and are sometimes actually interesting (to me). So far, I've not seen a promotion there.

  But again, I'm almost always in Landscape (unless reading a book) and don't see, then, the marketing for "Other customers bought..."  Amazon was upfront at the press conference about making the money not so much from the sale of a tablet  but when the owner uses it and of course that wouldn't be from just passive video watching, reading, or playing games. Amazon would want to draw attention to what you can buy.  So, it's a tradeoff and those who want to avoid marketing at all costs can get a Google Nexus, although for the same price, the Nexus has only 8 GB of storage space, one mono speaker, and no HDMI out to HDTV.


FixIt's Teardown to examine the unit for repairability and component quality
Fix-it just released a "Teardown" of both the Kindle Fire HD and the upgraded version of the first Kindle Fire, showing what's inside and commenting on what they find, explaining some of the workings, and they're impressed with the innards of the KFHD 7 and its relatively high repairability (a '7' to iPad3's '2', others have pointed out).

Amazon's Cloud Player goes live in UK today

This finally allows Kindle Fire owners in the UK, France, and Germany to store and play music over the web or via dedicated apps.  Details by CNET-UK's Harry Theobald for the UK.


The Kindle Fire HD has been rooted already
This won't be of much interest to the vast majority of readers but it's news, so here it is, with the caveat that anyone trying it and unsuccessful at it could easily brick their Kindle Fires.
  Except for the pure challenge, I don't know why people wouldn't just pay $50 more to get the 16 GB Google Nexus if they just want a pure Android tablet with GPS and an overall faster processor (but with limited audio playback w/o add-ons and no HDMI-out) to an HDTV.

A Kindle Fire Tips & Tricks book. Some complete Beethoven works on 99 mp3 tracks for $2

A COUPLE OF AMAZON ITEMS OF POSSIBLE INTEREST

While on a couple of other projects on a deadline, I've spent time, when taking breaks, on the Kindle forums since just before the weekend, joining others in answering questions and always finding interesting info from others there.

There are several things I want to pass on, so I'll concentrate on that this week.  Today, I have to complete the last of of those two projects and will just draw attention to a couple of items that Kindle customers might want.


Kindle Fire Tips & Tricks, by Tim Sievers, $1.99
  I don't know how I chanced on this small book, but I'm glad I did and I bought it immediately after reading the generous sample, which you can read online.

  The sample already had, for the first chapter, some tips I'd never seen.  It's very well written, very clear, and most of all, it's fun.  It's NOT a primer to the Kindle Fire but primarily a set of some neat shortcuts and tricks.

  Also, the LAYOUT is a pleasure, beautifully organized and pleasant to read, with good illustrations, and I think non-fiction Kindle authors should take a look at this one.

  NOTE: Amazon's User Guides are available in PDF format for each Kindle model.

  This writer, Tim Sievers, is just very well organized.  Again, not a Guide, not a Primer, just some very neat 'tips and tricks.' Released December.


ANOTHER Kindle Fire book which I just saw, but which I've not sampled or bought, has some raves and is $2.99.  The Kindle Fire Dept, by Gadget.  4 customer reviews, 5.0 stars average.  Worth a look.


31 Complete Beethoven works on an mp3 album, on 99 tracks for $1.99
16 hours of music - "Limited Time" deal.

Beethoven - 100 Supreme Classical Masterpieces
For those into Beethoven, or just curious, and wanting 99 tracks in the Cloud or on their Kindles for $2.

 (Erroneous title - it has 31 works but Amazon counts each movement as a 'masterpiece' -- there are some who might agree though.)

  Remember that you can play these from "the Cloud" on your computer also, using Amazon's Cloud Player, from any computer, with a password you choose.

  A cousin sent me this tip today and we both bought the mp3 album, since, among other performances on the $2 album, I've enjoyed Freddy Kempf's piano playing and did a webpage in 1999 to highlight his recordings when he was starting out.  He's now concertizing constantly in Europe and Asia, often in London.

  The Beethoven 'Archduke Trio' is by his trio, and the trio's CD received rave reviews when it came out just a few years ago.  As a hobbyist, I've loved playing through this piece with friends, so that is a real plus for me on this huge set.  Dubravka Tomsic is another excellent pianist, and some of her work is included on the collection of 99 tracks.  A customer points out that in addition to the symphonies, this is "one of the great bargains in the history of classical music.  Most of the performances are excellent, especially the Emperor Concerto, Missa Solemnis and Violin Sonatas."

  The album cover is funny -- someone with Beethoven's hair style and a grumpy expression wearing a modern suit and tie.  There are four customer reviews with 4.5 stars average and 45 "Like"s from Facebook.

  You can buy the 99 tracks separately but each one is 99c -- and since the album is $1.99 for a limited time (Amazon ends these things rather abruptly sometimes), it'd be silly to buy four movements of one piece for $3.96


Kindles and mp3's
The Kindle 2, 3, and DX keyboard models and the Kindle Touch play mp3s in the order in which they are placed on the device.  The Kindle 1 plays tracks randomly, so that won't work for complete works or for hearing pieces in the order you want.
