A special Kindle eReader limited time sale. Amazon Software Updates - some alerts and workarounds - tablets and eReaders. Amazon is working on resolving video display problems on some tablet updates. Updated free Kindle book search-links for August.

AMAZON Software Updates

_______________
First -- CURRENT, Limited Time Sale - $20 off the recent-discounted prices on Kindle eReaders

"Limited-Time Offers: $20 off Kindle $79 $59 and Kindle for Kids Bundle $99 $79"
On the basic Kindle eReader (7th Generation), Amazon has been discounting the price from $99 to $79.  There's an additional $20 off, for a limited time, bringing the temporary price down to $59.  This basic eReader is not front-lighted the way the Paperwhite and Voyage models are, and the special features are fewer, but it's for those who just want an inexpensive, simple eReader.

The "Kindle for Kids Bundle" offers the same basic Kindle model but with "2-Year Accident Protection, Blue Kid-Friendly Cover" added, for the temporary price of $79.  The features, bought separately would normally cost $139 or so.

_______________
There have been a number of silent software updates recently, automated and over the air, although the update-files are available for manual installs if they're wanted earlier.  However, in the case of the update for Kindle Fire and Fire tablets, OS software version 4.5.5, there have been reports of problems with videos not displaying in Youtube and other websites after the update.

Note that these are considered updates made available for "general improvements and performance enhancements" but they include no new features.

Mine came over the air on August 6, and I haven't experienced the problems with videos that others have, and it could be because I added a Flash file that's used by the alternate Dolphin browser but which may be helping even when using Amazon's default 'Silk' web browser.   I also made sure my video settings at Amazon are are for 'flash' (for my tablets) rather than "Silverlight."  All this is explained in the blog article on how to get video working on webpages that are, for some reason, balking at delivering video content to the tablet.

Customers at the Kindle Forums have been discussing notes sent to and received from Kindle device support staff. While some have luck with the appropriate software update files, others began experiencing video problems after theirs was installed over the air by Amazon.  BUT, Amazon will sometimes place a newer update file on their update pages without changing the update version number.  The one I received on my Year-2013 8.9" Kindle Fire HDX at first hesitated to show videos but resolved itself within a few minutes.  The "Settings / Device / System updates" area on the tablet shows no newer update since August 6.

The software update files, while helping some with the video-play problem (on webpages and youtube) did not help others, and some even found that after their tablets had gone into sleep mode, something changed, and videos were working again after waking up the tablet  So, I'd wait before doing anything.
Amazon support reps tell customers requestiong help that it'll take only a couple of days to fix the problems.

Another tip given by "angry old man" at the forum advised:
"Amazon told me to clear the Appstore data.  I did it and my device will stream now.
Just go to the settings at the top of the screen, hit "more" [or "Settings" if a later model] subject "Applications," "installed applications" [or "Appstore" directly if a later model], select Appstore, and hit Clear Data."

[On my somewhat later Yr 2013 HDX model, there is no appstore data to clear, but I do choose the setting of "Off" for "Collect App Usage Data" and maybe that was why I didn't experience the video problems associated with app data that has required 'clearing' in some cases.  Amazon would prefer to have the setting enabled to collect data on how apps are used, but I prefer to keep my use simple.]

UPSHOT - I recommend NOT doing anything about the update file(s) until Amazon resolves this, as they are well aware of the problems.  It could be that older Kindle Fire models are more affected by it.

Kindle eReader software updates
Softpedia.com reports that there are also updates for

Amazon Kindle 5th Generation -- Firmware 4.1.3
and

the older Amazon Kindle Touch (released after Kindle Keyboard 3) -- Firmware 5.3.7.3

It's difficult to identify the Kindles affected, considering Amazon's odd device-name decisions, and I'm showing the models affected using the software-updates page, but AGAIN, I would do nothing and let Amazon install these automatically, since these are just for general improvements and performance enhancements and I don't think they're worth installing manually.  I've not seen forum messages about any problems with these.

You can check your model's device software version against these version numbers.  Remember that you can always call Kindle Support at 1-866-321-8851 when you need help on your devices.

ECHO Updates and PRIME household sharing changes (the latter misunderstood by some mainstream tech columnists).
I'm doing separate blog entries for these.

Kindle Fire HDX and HD2 Tips: Software updates - general improvements for the Kindle Fire tablets are here - v11.3.2.5, v13.3.2.5, and v14.3.2.5.

Amazon has set a software update to go directly to the current line of Kindle Fire tablets
-- I noticed that mine was being received and installed today, August 15, 2014.   It suddenly turned on and did the update.  This will be true for most owners of these tablets.

The update hasn't been announced in the forums, possibly because it's considered a minor update.  Amazon's wording at the software update pages:

"The software update includes general improvements and performance enhancements."

General instructions from Amazon's help pages

To Download & Install Software Updates Automatically

Sync your Kindle Fire HD 2nd Generation, or Kindle Fire HDX 7", or Kindle Fire HD 8.9" to download the latest software update automatically.
Your Kindle Fire needs to be fully charged and connected to a Wi-Fi network before you can download the software update.
  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Device, and then tap System Updates.
  3. Tap Check Now. If an update is available, your Kindle Fire will automatically download the update.
  4. After you download the update, tap Update.
Your Kindle Fire will restart during the software update. After the restart, the message "Installing system update" will appear on the screen.
_______

However, some who haven't received an update yet may want to download and install these manually rather than wait for the automatic update.  They'll need to determine which software version is on the device...

  • Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.

  • Tap Device, and then tap System Updates.  If you have the latest software update, it should look like this: 11.3.2.3.2_user_323001620 [if for Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd Gen tablet, in this case, or later.]

  • Here are the Current and Latest Update versions (August 2014)
and the Update pages for those wanting or needing to manually install the updates:

Amazon's PRIME MUSIC feature launches with more than a million songs for unlimited streaming by Prime members at no additional cost. Update2: Prime Music apps are ready for Android and iOS

Update2 - Amazon sent out an email today that said the iOS and Android apps are ready.
Go to the new Prime Music apps page for these.

Also, apparently, per the email just now, the software updates for the Kindle Fire HDX and HD 2nd Gen tablets also include the Prime Music capabiility, although the software pages linked to in this morning's blog article on the software updates did not say that.

    [Blog article posted yesterday]
Amazon's new banner alert today explains it pretty well.  To see the listing of some of the artists, songs, and works included in the newly launched Prime Music program's free, unlimited streaming, see the separate blog page I made for the info on artist and recommended playlists (we can of course create our own and add to existing ones):
Prime Music - What and who's included in that Million plus?

The Prime Music feature is included at no added cost under the Prime program (free 2-day shipping is the basic feature, and Amazon's no-added-cost streaming Instant Video (over 40,000 movies and TV episodes) was added on top of that along with free rentals (one per calendar month) from an Amazon library of over 593,000 Kindle books -- no waiting-periods, no due dates -- and the new "free" music feature is, furthermore, ad-free, even with a base of over 1 million songs and "hundreds of playlists" with unlimited listening.  Negotiations with music publishers must have been interesting.

Amazon's press release is printed on several news sites this morning.  Included is this:
' Prime members can choose exactly which songs and albums to listen to, or they can sit back and listen to hundreds of expert-programmed Prime Playlists.

Discovering music is easy thanks to Amazon’s personalized recommendations.  Music fans will find tons of music they’ll love, from Grammy winners to indie breakout singers, along with a huge music catalog that can easily be combined with their own collection.

Prime members can also download songs from the Prime Music catalog to their mobile devices for offline playback on planes, trains and anywhere they’re without an internet connection. '

The new Prime Music streaming service is available only in the U.S. and Puerto Rico though.

Amazon adds examples of how this would be used.  I updated the blog to include the points below]:
' What Prime Music means for Prime members:

    * Your music collection just got a lot bigger—for free with Prime: Over a million songs from artists like Daft Punk, P!nk, Bruno Mars, Blake Shelton, The Lumineers, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna, and hundreds of Prime Playlists, are now available for streaming and offline playback at no additional cost to your Prime membership, with new music added all the time.
    * Your mix. Your music: Mix Prime Music songs with your own personal music collection to create the library you’ve always wanted.
    * You be the DJ or let us be the DJ -- it’s your choice: Build the perfect playlist by choosing songs you already love or songs you just discovered through Amazon’s personalized recommendations. Or, just sit back and listen to one of our hundreds of Prime Playlists designed for all types of genres, occasions, artists, moods and activities, like “Feel Good Country,” “Bad Boy Rock,” “Beards & Baristas: Indie Beats,” “Hip-Hop Workout,” “'90s One-Hit Wonders,” and many others.
    * No interruptions from ads: Enjoy an ad-free listening experience with unlimited skips and repeat plays.
    * Listen where you want: Enjoy Prime Music on Kindle Fire HD/HDX, iOS, Android, PC, Mac and any Web browser.
    * Take it offline: Download your favorite songs and Prime Playlists for offline playback on mobile devices.  With offline playback, you can enjoy your music wherever you are—and you can avoid costly data plan charges.

Prime members in the U.S. can start listening to Prime Music today at http://www.primemusic.com (Kindle Fire HD/HDX devices will get Prime Music in an automatic, over-the-air update
[Note from ab:I don't know if this was included in the June 6 Kindle Fire software update.]

Customers can [will be able to] also download the latest Amazon Music app in the Android and iOS app stores.  Eligible customers who are not already Prime members can try Prime Music with a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime by visiting www.amazon.com/prime. '

The first mentions I saw of Amazon's new Prime feature were from ZDNet and AppleInsider sites last night.

    ZDNet's Matthew Miller writes:
' Until the iOS and Android Amazon Music apps (currently known as Amazon MP3) are updated you can log in through your web browser and stream music.  You will see buttons to add songs to your library, which can take a while to build up your library.  It is easier to go through their created playlists and add and enjoy these titles.  The mobile apps should be released soon.
      . . .
Amazon lets you upload just 250 of your own songs for free or pay $24.99/year for up to 250,000 songs...
      . . .
. . .with today's release of Amazon Prime Music, I can now stop paying monthly for Google Music All Access and stream and download all the songs I want from Amazon's server.  I also like that I can access Prime Music and my own uploaded collection of songs from multiple devices and computers. '

He mentions that that now he's saving $95/year, as he no longer feels he needs the Google Music subscription, although Google has more songs available.

    From AppleInsider:
' A mix between existing free services like Pandora and for-pay options like the Apple-owned Beats Music, Amazon's solution takes a middle-of-the-road approach by focusing on ad-free playback, loosely curated playlists and manual track searching.
      . . .
' Playlists range from 20 to 30 songs, are curated by "Amazon's Music Experts" and come with titles like "Pop to Make You Feel Better," "Boss, Not Bossy" and "Bedford Ave. Hipster Hits."  More generic collections include hits from popular bands and artists, while single tracks can be found by searching the Prime Music library.
    . . .
Users can add to a Prime Music library, which is accessible on Macs and PCs via Amazon's CloudPlayer, while smartphone playback is handled by the Amazon Music app.

Kindle Tips: Large Software update v5.4.4 for Paperwhite 1 (Yr 2012). REVISED for New power-off options. [Paperwhite 2 also being updated, separately, linked to here]

KINDLE PAPERWHITE 1 Software Update v5.4.4

Kindle Paperwhite Software Upgrade from v5.3.9 to v5.4.4.

The Kindle Forum has an announcement that a major software update to the first Kindle Paperwhite is available, adding features to Kindle Paperwhite 1 that were first seen on the Paperwhite 2, the later and current model with a faster processor.  (A Paperwhite 1 U.S/ software update {UK page here} is also ready.)

Affected Paperwhite models: See Paperwhite 1 (US);   (UK Paperwhite 1: here;  Global Paperwhite 1: here.)   [Bracketed notes are mine.]

The new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite 1 can be found [here] [U.S.and international]

[And Here's the UK-only software update page.]

The software page tells you how to check the software version currently on your Paperwhite.  Mine still has v5.3.9 on it rather than v5.4.4

This update automatically downloads and installs on the applicable Kindle Paperwhite; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

I've revised this blog entry March 10 to add, at the bottom, new information on the Power off options.

The software update includes general improvements and the following new features:
    * Kindle FreeTime:
FreeTime lets you create personalized profiles for kids, and give them access to titles from your collection of books. Kids can keep track of their personal reading progress and earn achievement badges. To learn more, go to Kindle FreeTime

    * Goodreads on Kindle (US only)
Connect with the world's largest community for readers from your Kindle Paperwhite. See what your friends are reading, share notes, and rate the books you read. To learn more, go to Find and Share Books with Goodreads on Kindle.

    * Cloud Collections [Long awaited]
Use Cloud Collections to organize your content in custom categories. See your collections in a Collections view, and customize where your collections show on your device. To learn more, go to Organize Your Content with Cloud Collections.

    * Page Flip [Great feature many of us have hoped for]
While reading, you can skim the book page-by-page, scan by chapter, or skip to the end for a sneak peek without losing your place. To learn more, go to Go To Other Locations in a Book

    * Enhanced Bookmarks, Highlights & Notes
Access and manage all of your bookmarks, highlights, and notes more quickly and easily. To learn more, go to Bookmarks, Highlights & Notes

    * Smart Lookup
When you look up a word or character, Smart Lookup provides you with dictionary, X-Ray, and Wikipedia information. To learn more, go to Explore Your Book with X-Ray.

    * Vocabulary Builder
Words looked up in the dictionary are automatically added to Vocabulary Builder. View the definition and usage of the words, and quiz yourself with flashcards. To learn more, go to Expand Your Vocabulary. '

In a forum discussion, Kindle Forum Pro CBRetriever wrote the following about changes noticed in the (1) Cloud Collections processing (which AVOIDS the Paperwhite 2 problems from a default-automatic-importing of Collections from ALL other devices sharing the same account) and (2) Kindle Paperwhite Restart procedure.  (Bracketed info and emphases are mine):
' It didn't import any collections from my other kindles (YAY!!!!) not even in the Cloud

    ... my notes so far:

There's another new thing I've never seen before - when I hold the button in for 30 seconds, it doesn't restart, but I'm given 3 choices and I had to pick one (Shut Down, Cancel or Restart) I'm wondering if the new PW2 has the same choices [it DOES] ... I also had to reboot since it came up with a 2G and not a 3G connection. My collections have stars...

It did not bring in the Collections from other Devices.  I have now added 11 more dictionaries and user guides... I had to go download the user guide via manage Your Kindle - it didn't automatically download. ' [UK user's guide here]

    New Power-off Options display
Oddly, my Paperwhite 1's pop-up dialog box showed options different from what's described above.  The choices I saw during the attempts to either Power Off (holding the Power On/Off button for ~4 seconds) or force a clean "Restart" (holding the Power On/Off button for 20+ seconds) were:
    "Cancel | Restart ! Screen Off" ...

When an eInk screen is displaying a page but there is no change to that screen, the display is having no effect on the battery.
When you change what's being displayed (changing or adding anything on the page, as in tapping it on the side to get a new page or when an action brings a pop-up window or dialog box), the display is not using the battery.  That's why just pressing the power button for only ~1 second puts the Kindle to 'sleep' during which it displays an image but the Paperwhite light turns off.

Leaving it in this sleep state doesn't draw battery power as a result of the image display itself.  If, however, WiFi is On during Sleep state, any activity with subscription downloads or a Special Offers download -will- use battery power.

There is always very slow battery drain in between charges even when a device is turned off.

So, the "Screen Off" is an odd new choice on mine.  This just blanks the screen and puts it into sleep state.  SOME have requested a blank screen so they know it's "Off" but, in this case, it's only that there's no image seen - not even Amazon's default images during normal sleep-screens.

"Restart" acts more like a soft-reboot on a computer and clears up memory states that may be causing problems.

There is NO option on my Paperwhite 1 to completely Power Off or Shut down the Kindle.

It could be that my dialog box for powering off is different because I chose not to get Special Offers sent to my Paperwhite (I accept Special Offers on my Kindle Fire tablets though) and, therefore, blanking the screen with a "Screen Off" does not interfere with the marketing offers on the lockscreen.

CBRetriever, quoted above, may choose to get the offers on the Paperwhite and, as a result, doesn't get the 'Screen Off' option.  That's just conjecture on my part.

But she does get the option to 'shut down' her Kindle.  Odd.

Also, in my case, holding in the power button for over 20 seconds did cause a Restart, as in the past.

IF you experience unusual battery drain
Note that keeping your Kindle always connected to a Wi-Fi network can drain the battery faster under certain circumstances.  If you're experiencing that, then once you've got the update "over the air," put the Paperwhite back to "Airplane Mode ON" via the 'Settings' option on the Menu -- the option lets you toggle Wireless OFF, using the "Airplane On" choice.

Amazon's Paperwhite development team won't return the Wireless Off/On choice to the front menu as they did last year for the Kindle Touch, removing the 'airplane mode' icon which confuses many.  It's very inconvenient to have the WiFi On/Off setting on a secondary menu and many, as a result, don't even know that they can turn WiFi Off if needed.

Amazon probably prefers that we keep Wireless 'On' due to delivery of Special Offers but the battery-drain problem can occur when circumstances involve (1) subscriptions that are downloaded regularly (my New York Times Latest News subscription updates the Kindle edition about five times a day - $1.99/month) or (2) due to a weaker connection that results from the distance from the WiFi router, in which case the device keeps trying to connect when a download is due (and that can be for the special offers that Amazon regularly needs to send for those who choose to opt for the less-expensive model with the special-offers feature) and is then constanty active.

BUT WiFi needs to be 'On' after you've read a book and made annotations for a session AND when you then want to be able to continue reading later, on another device (like a smartphone), starting at where you'd stopped.
If WiFi isn't turned on, the Amazon servers won't have any way of knowing the last-page-read location nor any notes or highlighting you've made, which you'd want to be able to access on the other device.  So, a recommendation:
    1. When you're finished reading, tap the top-toolbar and press the HOME icon.
That will 'close' the book session and record the last page read and log the annotations.
    2. Tap the top of the Paperwhite to bring up the toolbar and menu icon.
    3. If you see an airplane icon at the top, your WiFi is Off (and you're in "airplane" take-off mode).
    4. Tap 'Settings'
    5. Turn Airplane Mode OFF, and that'll turn WiFi ON.
    6. At that point, the Kindle will try to sync your changes to the Server and will download anything that is pending (a subscription to a newspaper, magazine, or blog, usually).
    7. After that's done, you can go ahead and leave WiFi ON if you have no problems with faster battery drain
OR you can turn OFF the WiFi if you need to save battery power.

Only if you'd rather not wait - DOWNLOADING and transferring the Update via USB

Kindle News: Newish "100 Books of a Lifetime" pages. Prime program fees being increased (UK and US). Kindle for iOS app update v4.1.2. US/UK Kindle HDX/HD2 software updates v11.3.2.1, v13.3.2.1, and v14.3.2.1. China gets the latest Kindle tablets. Kindle-compatible Kaplan GMAT course available for business school students. Sony Reader closes its bookstore: reactions. Kindle HD 8.9"-1st gen price has gone up. A good DSLR camera bundle.

Amazon has a newish book feature and set of pages
that recommend '100 books to read in a lifetime' - featuring:
      1. Amazon Editors' choices
(This is the feature's "Main page" link, also used for the image.)
' We wanted the list to cover all stages of a life (which is why you'll find children's books in here), and we didn't want the list to feel like homework. Of course, no such list can be comprehensive – our lives, we hope, are long and varied – but we talked and argued and sifted and argued some more and came up with a list, our list, of favorites '
The Editors' choices total 149 as of today (one way to settle arguments for a list of 100).
If you scroll to the bottom, you can choose to see these sorted by Amazon's usual alternate viewing options.

      2. Readers' picks from Goodreads

This set of readers' choices IS kept to 100 books.

AMAZON'S PRIME PROGRAM PRICING IS GOING UP
      U.S. mostly:
Amazon announced during their 4th quarter earnings call that they are "considering" raising the price of Prime two-day shipping (U.S.), which includes 40,000+ movies and full tv episodes as instant video streamable at no added cost in the US and the ability to borrow one Prime Eligible Kindle book per calendar month from a choice of 527,000+ books, with no waiting period or due-date.

It's been $79/yr (or $6.58/mo., broken down) and they may raise it by $20 to $40.  (A $40 increase will not work for most, in my opinion and would be a destructive move.)  It's possible they'll begin to charge monthly or quarterly, in addiiton to annually, to encourage customers to sign up and/or stay with the program.

Amazon CFO Thomas Szkutak said, "...shipping costs have gone up a lot. Fuel costs have gone up a lot."

    UK:
Amazon UK HAS already announced new Prime program pricing effective YESTERDAY.  The older £49/yr rate went up, to £79 Feb. 26.  They had 'new' signups for the lower rate but that ended last night; I didn't read about it until yesterday.  Regular users of the UK site will have seen the offers though.
' Prime members in the UK are seeing the price increase in the wake of Amazon's 2011 purchase of LoveFilm.  That company's offerings will become the linchpin in Amazon UK Prime's streaming movie and TV service, which will provide unlimited viewing and access to such content across a broad variety of devices... '

In connection with the above, Amazon UK has rebranded the Lovefilm feature to 'Prime Instant Video' for UK.
Trusted Reviews has an excellent article on "How Amazon Prime Instant UK Affects Lovefilm and Amazon Prime Users":
' When you break the new charges down, it's much better value if you currently maintain a Prime and Lovefilm Instant account. A Lovefilm Instant subscription currently runs to just under £72 on its own. Add that to the current Prime charge, and you’re looking at a saving of £42. ' [vs the new £79/yr that covers both].

There is also a new deal between Warner Bros. and Lovefilm/Amazon Instant Video

    UK KINDLE HDX/HD SALE TODAY - Feb 27 - through March 4
I saw that Amazon-UK is celebrating the launch of Amazon Prime-UK with a 20% Sale on the Kindle HDX/HD tablets.  This is the popup box I got just now:
' Limited-time Offer - Save 20% on all Kindle Fire Tablets
To celebrate the launch of Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video, we are offering a saving of 20% on all Kindle Fire Tablets, for a limited time only

Limit two per customer, while supplies last.  UK customers only.  Discount valid on all versions of Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire HD 8.9", Kindle Fire HDX, and Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" tablets sold and shipped by Amazon EU Sarl. It does not apply to the same products sold by other sellers. Amazon reserves the right to cancel the promotion at any time. Promo applies to the lowest priced qualifying item and may not be combined with other offers. If you return items purchased using a promo code, we will subtract the value of the discount from your return credit. Offer expires March 04, 11:59 PM GMT. Offer not valid with 1-Click ordering. Void where prohibited. '

    GENERAL FEATURES of Prime
    They're spelled out on the
    * Prime-US and
    * Prime-UK pages.

      Recommendation
Those who've been interested in the U.S. Prime program but have never subscribed should watch for announcements of price increases.  In the UK, Amazon gave them a few days to decide to take advantage of the lower rate until the launch on Wednesday, and something similar to that will likely happen with the U.S. program.
I'm back on the blog (probably every other day) and will check for announcements.

    RECENT MINOR SOFTWARE UPDATES
Kindle for iOS 4.1.2 has been out quietly for a few weeks and this update seems to have solved most of the problems that people were having with the handling of the Collections feature in update v4.1.1. An example:
' In reply to an earlier post on Feb 4, 2014 10:43:32 PM PST
Last edited by the author on Feb 4, 2014 10:47:13 PM PST
    Cindy says:

My library is 10,800 approx and I can find the oldest book in my cloud in less than a minute. It seems very fast. Awesome. I meant to add that my collections didn't change they are exactly how they were before the update and I was able to put that oldest book into a collection easily and quickly. '
You can of course install the update from iTunes, and if you're having any problem doing that, some recommend you UNinstall the current Kindle for iOS app and then install the current updated version.

SOFTWARE UPDATE version x.3.2.1 (for latest tablet line)
The new HDX/HD line of tablets released late 2013 has had a minor maintenance update that's already gone "over the air" via WiFi, when enabled, to probably most regular users.

This update would include performance and battery life improvements, and bug fixes, and those who noticed the update reported it's solved some problems for them.

These updates are being delivered, as mentioned, wirelessly as usual in a distribution over a few weeks -- but if you didn't get it and would rather not wait for the automated update, you can do a manual update by downloading the software and updating your device via a USB cable.  Here are direct links to the software-update pages for the 3 tablets involved (emphases are mine):

      US
Update Page for Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd Gen
Update Page for Kindle Fire HDX 7"
Update Page for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"

      UK
Here's the UK software updates main page

Notice that at the intro page for each tablet type, there's an almost now unnoticeable link to a page that shows you how to Determine Your Software Version.  You'll see this link in light-blue on the once-again re-worked pages for even-whiter layout (which is almost blinding for me, and the light blue text links are harder to read on the glaring white layout that most larger website programmers love -- programmers tend to be young people with no eye probs yet).

If the determining page indicates your device's software does not have the latest one installed, you can follow the instructions to do a manual download and install.

The previous software update (versions x.3.1) for these tablets added several major features.  Version x.3.2.1 has mainly performance improvements in connection with these.

PRICE CHANGE ON HDX 8.9" 1st Gen (U.S.)
Amazon's current pricing as of today for the First Generation Kindle HD 8.9" tablet (with microHDMI ouput) went back UP to $299 (from $229, its price most of the time in recent months).   I first noticed this on Feb 24 and have no idea why the price went back up.

QUICK LINKS TO OTHER NEWS in a Kindle world:
    1. "Kaplan Test Prep has collaborated with Amazon to bring its GMAT course book directly to students enrolled in Kaplan courses using the cross-platform Kindle reading apps and Kindle Fire tablets—making it the first Kindle-compatible Kaplan GMAT course available for aspiring business school students.  Kaplan GMAT students will have the ability to study across multiple devices—Kindle Fire and Android tablets, iPads, PCs and Macs—and take advantage of features such as note taking, highlighting, tracking progress, word look up, searching and syncing across Kindle reading apps and Kindle Fire tablets. The digital offering will enable increased study flexibility for Kaplan GMAT students."

    2. "Angry Customers Raise Valid Points about Sony Closing Reader Store and Switching to Kobo", by Michael Kozlowski

These are Sony eReader customer reactions to the news "that Sony was closing their online Reader Store and transitioning all of their North American customers to Kobo."

    3. The HDX/HD line of tablets go on sale in China

    A good bundled camera kit
Amazon's camera-deals for the week included one of special interest to me because the Canon Rebel involved is the updated version of the camera I use and it's a DSLR with HD Video (while mine doesn't have video).  The Canon Rebel t3i bundle comes with not only the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (you can get the basic camera + lens for $500 at Amazon) but also the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens, for $599 for the bundle. (List price is $1,049, but one really never has to pay list price), and currently this bundle has 132 customer reviews with an average 4.8 stars rating.  This is a Prime-eligible product with free shipping.

Here's a recent photo I took with the Year 2006 Canon EF 70-100mm telephoto lens, which is not one of Canon's "L" lens models but provides sharp pictures in good light (and is 3 times the list price of the 75-300 lens bundled here).

While the bundled large-zoom lens gives you added flexibility for Amazon's bundled additional $100 (50% of List for the zoom lens), it's less expensive than other Canon zoom lenses (at $200 List) because it does NOT have image-stabilization (anti-shake), normally very important with zoom lenses in lower light, and it uses a different, slower motor for auto-focusing.

Canon's site describes it this way:
"The optical system, construction, and exterior are the same as the EF 75-300 mm f/4-5.6 III USM’s. The difference is that it uses a DC motor instead of a USM to drive the AF."

The quality of the picture should be good, outdoors, in very good light; otherwise you'd need a tripod to get a sharp photo.

Here are reviews of this zoom lens with pros and cons listed, at the Canon site.  If shooting on a high-contrast day and pointing up to tree limbs or tall buildings, there will be some "chromatic aberration" (Purple-fringing). Photo-editing software can remove it though.  One important benefit is that it's lighter than most 300mm-capable zooms.
And here are the Amazon customer reviews of the zoom lens, which normally cost $158 at Amazon.

For the added $100 for this kit, the Amazon customer reviews indicate a high level of satisfaction with this set with the normal-angle lens and the 75-300mm zoom lens for $600 total.

I'm writing about it because I will tend to blog more often if I can add other material than just Kindle-related products, and blog stats show me that the Kindle book-reading audience is interested in more than e-readers and tablets.

Kindle Fire HDX and HD2 Tips: Software updates adding some promised features for the new tablets are here - v11.3.1, v13.3.1, and v14.3.1. Details added. Also, a Miracast adapter recommended by Amazon. And new customization of personalized Kindle covers announced.

SOFTWARE UPDATES for promised additional features for the KINDLE FIRE HDX's and the new 7" HD 2nd Gen

Amazon has made a software update available as of today for the new HDX line and for the new Kindle Fire Basic 7", which is called "HD 2nd Gen" (which replaces last year's basic Kindle Fire that had no HD, no camera, and no HDMI-out and which sold, retail, for $159).

Most of the new features added in this update group are described below, and they also include the usual general improvements as well as the mentioned feature enhancements.

One neat feature not mentioned in the software-download pages, but noted in the press release, is the addition of Voice Dictation.
"Voice dictation converts your speech to text -- available in all languages when online; offline support available in US English"

In addition to the Voice Dictation feature, some other features mentioned in Amazon's press release but not detailed on the update pages include the following:

"New accessibility enhancements that enable blind and visually impaired customers to save a separate accessibility profile for children in Kindle FreeTime, scroll lists automatically when swipe navigating, hear enhanced sound feedback and screen orientation changes announced, and have more control when editing text and navigating web content."

"Dozens more new features, performance and battery life improvements, and bug fixes."

These updates will be delivered wirelessly as usual in a distribution over a few weeks -- but if you'd rather get them now, you can do a manual update by downloading the software and updating your device via USB cable.  Here are direct links to the software-update pages for the 3 tablets involved (emphases are mine):

Update Page for Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd Gen
Update Page for Kindle Fire HDX 7"
Update Page for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"

The main added features described on the update pages (shown below) are the same for all three tablet models except that the sentence under the "Enterprise" category on the HDX 7" update page inadvertently omits "Protect secure data on your Kindle Fire with device encryption tools" although the feature IS included in the described features for the lower cost HD 7" 2nd Gen tablet.  So, that would just be an oversight.
    * Find and share books with Goodreads
Goodreads on Kindle lets you connect with the Goodreads community to follow friends and see what they are reading, and share and rate books on your Kindle Fire.

    * Organize your content with Cloud Collections [Long requested]
Organize your content library into collections like "Favorite Books" and "Sports Apps" that are synchronized with compatible Kindle devices and reading apps.

    * Watch movies and TV shows on another device with Second Screen
Fling movies and TV shows from your Kindle Fire to your 2013 Samsung Smart TV or PlayStation 3 using Second Screen.

    * Learn more about books with Smart Lookup
With the Smart Lookup feature, you can quickly look up words in the dictionary or Wikipedia or translate text in a book.

    * Print from your Kindle Fire [Built-in support instead of dependence on an external app]
Print Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, photos, e-mails, calendar events, and contact information from your Kindle Fire to a printer that supports mobile printing.

    * Free up storage space with 1-Tap Archive
With 1-Tap Archive, your Kindle Fire groups all content that has not been used recently so you can move it to the Cloud with just one tap.

    * Enhanced enterprise features [See Note above]
Protect secure data on your Kindle Fire with device encryption tools, manage security certificates, and connect to your company’s Wi-Fi network—whether you’re at home or at work -- with remote VPN capabilities.

    * Set alarms and view additional time zones with the Clock app
Use the all-new Clock app to check the date and time, set an alarm clock, and more.

The press release adds a larger explanation of Second Screen
"Fling TV shows and movies from your tablet to your big-screen TV.   Second Screen turns your TV into the primary screen and frees up your Fire HDX to provide playback controls, a customized display for X-Ray, or simply a place to email, browse the web, and more while you watch a movie.  Second Screen is available for PlayStation 3 and Samsung TVs, and will be available starting later this year for PlayStation 4."

This is in contrast to Miracast, which -- like the cabled HDMI-out, in last year's HD models, will "only" MIRROR what is on your tablet (whether a movie or web-browsing) HDTV without using cables from your tablet to the TV.

Here's a recommended Miracast adapter (seen mentioned positively in the Amazon Kindle Forums based on a recently added recommendation by Amazon as "Certified" at its tablet Miracast help page) -- The Netgear Push2TV PTV3000 --
-- BUT NOTE that Amazon says it requires a Firmware-update for the adapter before using it.
The update likely fixes a main reason for some '1' ratings in earlier customer reviews on the product page).  The adapter is $60 but Amazon has its 30-day refund policy on this Prime shipping product shipped and sold by Amazon.

Here are two recent comments given on the Amazon Kindle Community forums when I asked if anyone had found a Miracast adapter without notable lag time:
    ' Steve Z. says:
I have read the reviews of the miracast adapters sold on Amazon as well. They all seem to have a lag problem. Then I read the reports by several here in the forums that they had had good luck with the mirroring technology with their HDX's. I also did a search in Amazon help and see that Amazon recommends the Netgear Push2TV adapter. This happened to be the same one others in these forums have suggested. I purchased one figuring I could return it if it didn't work. It arrived last Monday and the first thing I did was update the firmware. ( the newest firmware is dated in November.) I hooked it up to my TV and it immediately worked. Turning on mirroring in the HDX is very simple. I detected no lag or stuttering. It mirrored well with pictures, video (youtube), and simple games. (Have not tried a graphics intensive game yet.) Last night we watched an entire Amazon Prime movie with no hiccups or errors. Works for me.

    Jules Nichols says:
I agree with Steve Z, I got my Netgear Push2TV adapter on Monday, I didn't update the firmware, but went straight to try it out. Worked fantastic. No lag or stuttering. I'm using it with the 7"HDX. '

Note that the recommendation (and certification) is by Amazon and not by me, as I haven't bought the product yet.

For MORE DETAILS on the new feature enhancements on this update, see the earlier HDX/HD2 articles with far more thorough descriptions of what they do:

      1. Overview of New Features
      2. Things to Know about the new features

Those articles have clarifications for some points that have puzzled some.

ADDED TIP on a tablet cover + a new "Personalization" feature
The first tip is for those who find the Origami cases more pricey than wanted.

      1. The Poetic Slimline cover is notable for having 65 customer reviews currently, with 63 of them 5-star and the other two, 4-star, while being inexpensive ($9.95 currently for the 8.9" model) -- and while this page highlights the 8.9" HDX model, the bordered TEXTBOX under Availability at the top of that product page gives links for these covers for the 7" HDX and HD 2nd Gen models as well.  They all carry the same ID number for links.  Each headlines a 3-year manufacturer warranty from Poetic.

A new Customization or Personalization feature for Kindle covers was announced, and you can read about that on the "Create your own Kindle accessories" page but from what I see it has to be ordered at the same time you order the case.  You can upload your own photo or image design or choose from several pre-designed ones offered by Amazon.  This is all I know for now, though.

Probably enough info, overall, for one day?  Am still working on a report on the 8.9" HDX 64GB I bought and have been putting through the mill (and it generally has exceeded my expectations).

Kindle Tips: Another Kindle Paperwhite 1 software update, v5.3.9

KINDLE PAPERWHITE 1 Software Update v5.3.9

Kindle Paperwhite Software Upgrade to v5.3.9

Reader Peraino sent another tip (yesterday) that yet another software upgrade for Kindle Paperwhite 1 is available, though not with the new features of the Paperwhite 2 yet -- that would normally take months to happen.

I've still not been around lately, but when I am, I'm now working on setting up my new, main computer, which is a Microsoft Surface Pro 2, which is a spectacularly capable "TabTop" -- essentially a very fast, smooth, can-do-anything 2-lb laptop with a separate 1/2 lb Type keyboard cover (which, when the keyboard cover is detached, also functions as a super fast, though relatively heavy, tablet -- but it's most notable for being able to run, easily, full Windows programs of the most graphically-complex types like Adobe Photoshop's latest and Lightroom 4 or 5 and the full Office Suite, if you get a model with sufficient storage space and 8 GB of RAM.  I'm really loving it.

So, I'm on my way back to Kindle productivity after dealing with that and finishing a couple of other projects that kept me mostly away from the blog.

NOTE: Even when not actively blogging (when there is no startling news), I respond to questions in the Comments areas of the blog entries -- and the Q&A entries are always shown in summary form and linked to, latest first, on the blog's right-hand column (which is used for information that's ongoing or for reference materials on topics of special interest to many who visit the blog.  So check "Latest Comments" (in the info/reference column on the the right of the page, whenever you're curious what people are asking and the responses made, even when I'm not actively blogging.

On to the latest Paperwhite 1 (previous Paperwhite model) update v3.5.9 eff. Nov. 8, 2013.

Devices involved: See Paperwhite (US);   (UK Paperwhite: here; Global Paperwhite: here.)

Tne new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite 1 can be found [here] [U.S.]

[Here's the UK-only software update page]

The software page explains how to check the software version currently on your Paperwhite 1.  Mine still has v5.3.8.1 on it rather than v5.3.9 -- I'm usually one of the last to receive software updates, so sometimes I do follow the instructions to do a manual download and install to my Kindle if the change is important to me.

This update automatically downloads and installs on the applicable Kindle Paperwhite 1 eventually; however, as mentioned, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

Here's what they describe for update v5.3.9 ...
' The software update includes general improvements and the following feature enhancements:

    * Hide Reading Progress Option
While reading, tap the bottom left of the screen to switch between four reading progress options, including Location in book, Time left in chapter, Time left in book, and None, which hides your reading progress from the bottom of the screen.  To learn more, go to "View Your Reading Progress" at the Amazon "Reading Basics" help page.

    * Improved PDF Performance
General performance and stability improvements for PDF files.

    * Improved Homonym Lookup in Chinese and Japanese
When you look up a word that has multiple meanings for the same spelling (homonym), you can view a full list of the available definitions from within the dictionary definition window. '

As ever, note that keeping your Kindle always connected to a Wi-Fi network can drain your battery faster.  So, once you've got the update "over the air," put the Paperwhite back to "Airplane Mode ON" via the 'Settings' option on the Menu -- the option lets you toggle Wireless Off with the "Airplane On" choice.

Amazon has not put the "Wireless Off" and "On" back on the front menu as they recently did for the Kindle Touch, removing the confusing-to-many 'airplane mode' icon, which many of us wish they would do, as it is very inconvenient to have it on a secondary menu and many don't even know about the wireless-off feature, causing more battery drain and confusion over that.  Amazon: please do this someday; the Kindle Touch team has the right problem-avoiding idea.

I realize Amazon prefers Wireless 'On' due to delivery of Special Offers but the battery-drain problem can occur when circumstances involve subscriptions that are downloaded regularly or due to a weaker connection that results from the distance from the router (or even due to a weaker router), in which case the device keeps trying to connect when a download is due (and that can be for the special offers that Amazon regularly needs to send for those who choose to opt for the less-expensive special-offers feature, or for chosen subscription deliveries.)
