Kindle news: YouSendIt, Inc. announces custom app built for Kindle Fire - Update

YouSendIt app for Kindle Fire released today

Broadcast Newsroom brings a press release from YouSendIt about their new "BYOD" (Bring Your Own Device to the workplace) app released today with "three new productivity features" making it "even easier to access content and collaborate on the go"

Mihir Nanavati, VP of product management for YouSendIt says, "... users can view files, sign documents and share files and folders from Kindle Fire..."

Clicking on either image takes you to the Amazon Android Appstore page for the product.  "When users download the app from Amazon [it's free at this point]  and sign up within 30 days of today, YouSendIt will give them unlimited e-signatures on their Kindle Fire for the lifetime of their YouSendIt account.

"Users can quickly sign any document and securely send it -- without having to print, scan, fax or ship it."

YouSendIt also added new features to its Android smartphone application available in other Android marketplaces.

Advantages noted:
  • Add files from a memory card/local folder -- NEW
  • Open files from the YouSendIt app in other apps and edit them -- NEW
  • Quickly act on files via new action bar -- NEW
  • Move files from other applications to YouSendIt
  • Securely send a file, share a folder, sign a file and preview files
  • Manage folder permissions such as adding and removing users from shared folders

I'd say that the decision to try this one is a no-brainer.  If fees attached at a later date are unwelcome, the app can be deleted.

(Update: In addition, they offer for businesses needing to comply with BYOD policies, Workstream by YouSendIt, which includes procedures for "including application-level passcode protection, remote wipe and blacklist/whitelisting for sharing content. In addition, Workstream encrypts data on the device, in transit and at rest.")

Kindle tips: Kindle Fire book download glitch; disappearing books; newly-free popular Read It Later app

When a newly-purchased book won't download

Earlier I wrote about the solution two forumners found for a situation in which Kindle books seemed to disappear in both the Kindle Fire listings and in the "Cloud" (server) listings as well.

Today's Kindle Fire tip is how to correct a glitch that causes a currently-purchased Kindle book to NOT download to the Kindle Fire, whether the attempted download is done via the Kindle Fire itself or from the Amazon ManageYourKindle page.

The solution comes from forum member Josh -- and that is to:
.  Lightly touch the gear or wheel icon at the top right
.  Then select "+" or "More" to get Settings menu
.  Select "My Account" (2nd on the settings list)
  .  Select "Deregister"

Once that's done, you can "Reregister" right away and all your info is there for you -- no need to retype it.

A mere deregister-register action saves a lot of time over the last-ditch "Reset to Factory Defaults" which I (and some senior Kindle support staff) feel should be a LAST choice, as a Factory-Default reset requires you to re-enter your basic Amazon and Kindle information and to select books and other media all over again (to re-populate the device) and to re-set up things the way you've wanted them, which can take an hour for most situations.

Ashley seconds Josh's recommendation after his own experience based on the advice of a lone Kindle Fire specialist (among a few others who did not know a solution to this) who suggested he de-register and re-register the KFire.  Ashley wrote:
"This worked and it only took 10 sec. In addition I lost none of my settings/apps/content."

Popular Read It Later Android app renamed to "Pocket" and now free

paidContent's Laura Hazard Owen reports that Read It Later will no longer have a $2.99 Pro version and will be known as Pocket, as it makes it "simple "to take any content users discover, with them no matter where they go."

The founder, Nate Weiner, told Owen that the app was profitable right away and has been the "number-one paid news app on Android and Kindle Fire."  He says he's after a different business model now, which he'll explain this summer.

The app already has 4.5 million users and its most popular source of content to take to enjoy "later" is Youtube and its videos.
' Forty percent of items saved aren’t articles but content like videos, images, things to buy, travel tips and recipes. '

Owen adds that the new version of the app "makes it easier to filter content by type and to tag and organize it."

If you already own Read It Later Pro, you'll just need to update the app.
"Users of the free version have to download Pocket separately."

The Amazon product page emphasizes the new user-interface and the Content-Type filter -- "Pocket automatically filters your content so that you can quickly switch between articles, videos, and images."

Kindle News: FREE Android App for today-only prints computer items to Kindle Fire

ACTPrinter app for Android prints computer documents not to a printer but to Kindle Fire and other Android devices.

Normerly $1.99, you can get ACTPrinter app today for $0.00.

It allows you to organize the printfile versions it receives, by the way.

There are some things you should know, and it's easier to read them on a webpage than on the Kindle Fire screen when there are no paragraph breaks in a product description and you can't enlarge the tiny fonts of an Android store app description.

PCWorld ranked ACTPrinter as the #1 "Green App" - Bear in mind though that a printable file can be 500K or more as shown in the image I used from the product page. That's half a meg, or about 2/3rds the size of a normal novel.

From the product page:
'Have you ever wondered why you always end up printing those so-called electronic tickets, boarding passes, and similar documents? Ever wasted a sheet of paper to remember a will-call pickup number? ... ACTPrinter allows you to virtually "print" any document from your Mac or PC to your Android device.'
' Want to read documents on the go? ACTPrinter is for you. "Print" documents, e-mails, webpages, and more from any program on your computer directly to your Android device. Your computer will automatically detect your Android device when connected to your AirPort or Wi-Fi network - there's no need to type in an IP address. '

This requires installing a program on your computer, however.
' Computer Requirements

In order to use this app, you must install the free ACTPrinter companion software available at Houdah Software's website.  or PCs, you must have a computer with a Wi-Fi card that is running Microsoft Windows XP, Vista (x32 and x64), or Windows 7 (x32 and 64).  For Macs, you must have a computer with an Airport card that is running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later.  Please note that ACTPrinter is not designed to print hard copies, but "print" virtual copies to your Android device. '

KINDLE NEWS: Kindle Fire's fast rise in actual use noted ... Amzn appstore app updated yesterday...Kindle Blogger on 'Best Reads of 2011' list - UPDATE

Amazon Appstore app updated to version 2.2.0

UPDATE - Commenter Jenni pointed out today that the Kindle Fire's built-in app for the Amazon Android Appstore is Version 2.38.6 while this update for the Amazon store is Version 2.2.0.

The Update Tuesday, also reported in detail at Android App Central is about the Amazon app store for Android used on devices that are not the Kindle Fire.

In fact, I don't see the option to show/not show notifications on the Kindle Fire's own built-in store app, but a clue was that no "compatability testing" app would be needed or improved for the Kindle Fire version!

So, the v2.2.0 Amazon app store app is only for OTHER devices using Amazon's Android Appstore, and is used as an alternative to Google's Android Market and of course so that people can go get Amazon's "Free Android App of the Day"

In fact, part of the annoyance for me was seeing so many notifications from Amazon's apps that are seen

I'm linking to the details in AndroidCentral report and the even more detailed at AndroidPolice (with screen shots of notification options), for those whom this update affects (many of us have Android smartphones and other Android tablets -- in my case the Samsung Galaxy S2 phone and the Samsung 10.1" Galaxy Tab tablet.

On the Kindle Fire, there are no notification options (I'd assumed they were on the manageyourkindle page but they're not), so the notification changes are apparently only for the Amazon Android AppStore app that is used by all other devices, which CAN go to Google's Android Market for app files.

Sidenote - Android Market is now Google Play.
Android Market's name and URL have just been changed by Google from market.android.com to Google Play, with the URL https://play.google.com/store, which is where you're taken if you type the old Android Market address.

Earlier today, for the Amazon Android AppStore app used by other devices:
The Verge's Andrew Webster lists the changes.

We no longer have to see the notifications every day or several times a day, as there's now an option to be notified or not about app downloads, installations, and updates -- and we can now tweak the settings.

Since I don't install every app I download (the free ones are just kept at Amazon until I want to use them), I really don't like being notified constantly that they are ready to be installed.  So, this is a very welcome change for me.

There are also app compatability checks and messaging in connection with payment options.

KINDLE FIRE AND USAGE STATS
Tuesday, a day before the iPad 3 (or iPad HD) announcement today, Gigaom.com and several other online 'zines carried stories on Mobile ad provider Jumptap's MobileSTAT report, that
  • the Kindle Fire's traffic ('in-use' stats) jumped, from 4 percent at launch in November, to 20% in December and to 33% in January.

The iPad's mobile traffic dropped from 65 percent in November to 48 percent in January.
  • helped increase overall tablet traffic by an average of 50% through January.

Gigaom's Ryan Kim Ryan Kim adds:
' But the Kindle Fire is showing that it is not just a cheap plaything.  According to the data, people are actually using it despite its rougher edges compared to the iPad.  In January, Flurry noted that the Kindle Fire had just barely eclipsed the Galaxy Tab as the most used Android tablet.  Based on Jumptap’s figures, it looks like the Fire has outpaced the rest of the Android pack. '
In the graph above,
.  the Apple iPad market share is in light blue.
.  the Kindle Fire market share is shown in blue-green, and
.  the All others market share is shown in dark blue.

You can see the relative changes for each.  Click the graph to get the larger, more readable graph at Gigaom.

Jumptap tracks the advertising on its network of 95 million U.S. users, involving 21,000 apps and websites.  They also found that "Android and [Apple] iOS represent 91 percent of the mobile OS market, with Android enjoying 58.8 percent of mobile market share while iOS follows with 32.2 percent.  More detail and another graph are at the gigaom site.  Of course, the new iPad will have an effect on relative growth shown for the next few months.

KINDLE BLOGGER JOHN COG FINDS THAT ONE OF HIS BLOG ARTICLES MADE THE READER'S DIGEST BEST READS of 2011

From Me and My Kindle (Website: www.beyond-black-friday.com), here's Cog's introduction about his discovery:
' A funny thing happened when I found Reader’s Digest‘s list of the “Best Reads of 2011.”  A post from my blog was #4 on the list!

Woody Allen wrote the #3 article on the list, and Roseanne Barr wrote the #13 article.  (And I also recognized the names Christopher Hitchens and David Brooks).  The editors of Reader’s Digest had selected “the most unforgettable articles” for the entire year from newspapers, magazines, and from the internet, but it still took me a while to fully accept what had happened.  The “best reads” of the year came from The New York Times, Vanity Fair magazine, The Atlantic, National Geographic, and — from this blog! '

Heady stuff, but he's always been an engaging, creative blogger.  To see which of his stories made the Best Reads list for the last year, read the full story on his blog.

I use Cog's name here despite his using a pseudonym on the blog, since his postings are often available at Teleread under his everyday name, and he's been interviewed about his blog at Len Edgerly's The Kindle Chronicles podcast, and is this week's featured interview, focusing on his co-authoring of the new Kindle word game for Kindle Keyboards (non-Touch models) AND the $79 Kindle Basic (no Keyboard/No Touch) Throw in the Vowel

Kingston Wi-Drive App for Kindle Fire now in Android App Store, 16-32Gig drive at Amazon. UPDATE-7 Jan 24 (Unit originally only for Apple)

KINGSTON WI-DRIVE NOW SUPPORTS KINDLE FIRE AND IS AT AMAZON STORE - FREE WI-DRIVE APP FOR KFIRE IS NOW DOWNLOADABLE

See several updates below.  I'll do a report soon from having worked with the Wi-Drive now, which has been working better than I expected. - Jan 24 (Original blog entry was Jan 17, morning)

Now we can add a 16 to 64GB pocket-sized drive to the Kindle Fire.  The drive can be carried in your pocket.

Android Mag's Pallavi had one of the several announcements of the availability of Kingston's WiDrive a few days ago, but the Kindle Fire app was not available in the Amazon AppStore.  It is now. I just downloaded it.

Pallavi writes:
' It utilizes "Flash-based technology to store data from USB-compatible PCs."  The content can be retrieved via Wi-Drive’s built-in wireless signal; and you do not require cables or an internet connection to do so.  What's more, three users can work on different file types simultaneously from a single Wi-Drive. '

THAT SHARING FEATURE
That would mean each could be accessing different movies, music or other data at the same time, without wires.

The product description for the Wi-Drive with Kindle Fire Support mentions that you can run other apps while using WiDrive features and that there are "enhanced photo features."
Also mentioned: "Additional Network Setting - select WiFi channel"

Update - The first, very helpful customer review there, by Steeler Nation "Peter", written from use with iDevices, explains that the unit provides its own WiFi network in which the Kindle Fire connects to the Wi-Drive, and two or three devices can access different or same media files on the drive at the same time, all streaming smoothly, per customer reviews of the use of Wi-Drive with the iPad and other Apple devices using this drive for add-on storage and Non-Internet streaming.

His caveats are that with two or more people using it at a time, constantly streaming, it runs for only 3 hours and then must be re-charged again and you cannot recharge this with the miniUSB adapter while using it.  He doesn't say how long it lasts with one person using it. [End of Update]

Update 6 - I struck the part in the last paragraph that I found probably not to be true  I'm able to recharge it at home when plugged into a power source (though we cannot recharge it via a computer USB port as explained in the manual) and it should work with a car charger unless there is something added that is necessary for a charger to power it.
I called up Kingston Tech Support and talked with a Level 2 support rep who said that a car adapter does charge it while you're using the drive but the car adapter has to be up to a certain standard and the best thing to do is look for car adapters that are Apple Product Certified. [End of Update 6]

Mobile Magazine has some very good photos.

The Wi-Drive can be shared by 3 users concurrently, as we've seen, and is already available from Amazon in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB versions.

Wi-Drives are the shape and approximate size of Apple's iPhone 4s.

The unit comes with a one-year warranty and free technical support.

Amazon customer reviews of the basic unit (which had been only for Apple devices previously) -- 34 reviews at 4.5 stars average.  No '1' or '2' ratings.

There's one customer review at the Amazon product page, for the Kindle Fire version, from someone who already had the drive for his Apple devices.
' By Wayne2626 [January 12, 2012]
Amazon Verified Purchase
This review is from: Kingston Wi-Drive 16 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WID/16GBZ (Personal Computers)

I have a Iphone 4 and I was give[n] a gift certificate which I used to get a 16g wi-drive and it worked great with the iPhone.  I also got a kindle fire for christmas.  I found that amazon was going to come out with the wi-drive program which I just downloaded and it was no problem getting it to work with the fire giving me 24g of usable memory with the fire for shows, movies, and pictures.

Also one person can watch a movie stored on the wi-drive and another person can watch the same movie or a different movie stored on the same wi-drive at the same time, sharing media on the same wi-drive at the same time with two different devices... '

UPDATE 2 - An example of the convenience of sharing the drive, from one review (by Vurtis):
'...exactly what I needed.  My family was flying across the country and we didn't have enough memory on our iPhones & my iPad.  After being told from several stores that there was no way to expand with extra hard drives ... I tried the Kingston.  I couldn't be more happy.  The device works great.  My wife watched a chick flick,  I watched an action adventure and my daughter watched a Disney film.  We made it across the country and all were happy.  We had about 15 movies ripped onto it. It is about the same size as the iPhone and was a bit lighter. '
In that case he chose the 32-gig drive, but this spelled out the apparent ease of sharing without problems.  We'll see.  I'll try the smaller one out soon.

DOWNLOADING THE WI-DRIVE APP
Here's the downloadable Wi-Drive app for KindleFire, which you can order this way and it'll be ready for your Kindle Fire.  Or, after checking this app page, you can just get on the Kindle Fire, go to "Apps" and then click on "Store" at upper-right and search for it and download it there.
But it's simpler to just click on the product page's download box and get the app ready for your Kindle Fire to install (and the record of $0.00 'purchase' is on your server records already that way).

WI-DRIVE FOR KINDLE FIRE USER MANUAL
Kingston offers a downloadable Wi-Drive for Kindle Fire User Manual in PDF format

HOW YOU USE WI-DRIVE - A VIDEO
Kingston's press release of Jan. 10 recommends their (high definition) YouTube VIDEO about the Wi-Drive.

REMINDER ABOUT VIDEO FORMATS - A CONVERTER
Any video you play on the Kindle Fire, whether from a DVD or from your personal videos, must be converted to MP4 first.
Conversion's no longer needed, as there is an app you can get from Amazon which plays almost ANY kind of formatted personal videos from your cameras or videos from Youtube.

That app is "BSPlayer" and, as mentioned, it's in the Amazon appstore.

I describe it in a blog article Nov. 15, 2012.

People outside of the U.S. can get this app from 1mobile.com and other secondary appstores.

I've had great luck with the extremely flexible and ultra-effective Tools4Movies' DVD Catalyst 4, which is easily the best one of the several I tried and worth much more than the $9.95 price.  Another one, which is not as flexible but which has the easiest 'joining' of mp4 files I've encountered, is Emicsoft, but it's $35 and the author won't give you a full file result with the Trial copy.  Tools4Movies' DVD Catalyst has the most responsive, quality tech support I've experienced while Emicsoft comes with virtually no support.

UPDATE [1] -- Video Converter tools
I've asked the knowledgeable Amazon Kindle Forum members what good, free or low-cost utilities they know of for converting videos to mp4 and have already received very good information from L. Leverton, Pineapple, Tink-erbell. Q, cicsos2, and kwajkat in that forum thread.

So far, DVD Catalyst 4's full $9.95 version (vs free versio)n, stands out.  L. says:
' It now has new Fire upgrades that do some amazing things.  It can eliminate the gray bar and make it a full screen video among other things.  I tried it again yesterday on the Liam Neeson Unknown movie.  I stuck the dvd in the drive and selected kindle fire as the device and selected go.  It was done in a matter of minutes and was great. '
  L. also mentions seeing a new Movie Gallery app that was $2.00 ... so there's another possibility.

Visit that thread for any additional very useful input from the members there.

(Later) I've seen more recommendations and the fact that DVD Analyst has a rep for very good customer service.  Apparently, their Movie Gallery 2.0 feature allows you to keep videos there for later streaming by you, which would be a good feature for non-Amazon videos you have.  Amazon will store, free, up to 5 gigs of any of your non_Amazon video files but not stream them, and of course 5 gigs of videos don't go that far.

UPDATE 4: Highrider, in another forum thread, writes, about DVD Catalyst:
' It has a drop down menu to select the device you want the video formatted for.  You can select the Kindle Fire from the list and then choose one of several quality formats.  I've had the best luck with what they call Kindle Fire (fast).  Haven't had one fail to play after using this setting and it's formatted to 1024x600 already to fit the Fire screen '
[End of Update 4]

UPDATE 5 - kwajkat described Maxell's AirStash, a flash thumb-drive that comes with 8 or 16 gigs of memory and data is stored on SD cards. &bnsp; This is $149 to $179 depending on how much internal memory you want to use for running it, but you'd have access to several 16 or 32 gig SD cards this way.

HOWEVER, I read that you must switch to this drive's network and turn off the Kindle Fire's Internet access, and the AirStash's access when the AirStash is itself connected to your WiFi router, is limited, though there are utilities that can improve that.

The customer reviews are less positive for this but it's still a strong competitor, except that you cannot do the Net while it's attached unless it is itself connected to a WiFi network.

The Wi-Drive has a 2nd wireless built in that allows your connected Kindle Fire to work with it while the KFire is connected to the Internet

Also, the AirStash uses WEP security only, not WPA, so is considered less-secure in public places.  The SD card switching is a great feature though.
I'd like to hear any comments pro and con that you have, on either device. Thanks.  [End of Update 5]

HandBrake - This is a free converter very useful for resizing segments when you run up against contraints such as the 4-gig file-size maximum on the FAT system (which is used by the KindleFire device), but users get only 5.5 gigs for user data on that anyway.  It's a very good adjunct to your video converter toolbox but is not known as the easiest program to use otherwise.

SUMMING UP
This Kingston Wi-Drive info should be good news for many :-)
If you have any first-hand experiences with this, now that it's available for the Kindle Fire (or even with Apple devices in the past), let us know in the Comments area. Thanks.

Apple users who don't already know about this unit might benefit from it also.
