Kindle Tip: Really Good Photo Basics Kindle book free again for maybe one day -- on 'mastering' basic camera settings

An excellent Kindle guide to photography basics is free again for today and I JUST saw that it was, because I was looking for it for a friend, for regular price.

I'm repeating the earlier blog details on this, to get this tip off tonight:
A book on the basics of camera settings -- what they mean and how they work together -- is free for a day or so.  Generally the free promos are one day to five, the average seeming to be 2 days while some are free for only a few hours.  This may have been made free earlier this week but, as mentioned, I just noticed it.

This is a guide to 'mastering' the concepts of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure, written by AI Judge, whose Kindle books on photography basics get high ratings for clarity.  It's not a book for advanced users who already use these controls with a good understanding of them.  It's for those who depend on 'auto' mode but would like to experiment with more control over their results when they want.

It's a small book, only 68 pages, but I've downloaded it and it's very well organized, very clearly written and should be a boon for anyone who would like to try a bit more than 'auto' mode on their cameras and it will help in understanding why certain combinations of settings may be optimal for this or that situation.  Focal Length is explained as well.  The Kindle edition of this small guide is generally $5.99 - it's also available in paperback for $12.21.

And of course, the cost of the Kindle edition is $0.00 today.  I've no idea if it'll still be a free promo anymore on Thursday. Apologies for not looking earlier.

Interesting-sounding free Kindle book for next 3 days. Barnes and Noble's CEO resigns. A coming smartphone with LCD -and- eInk screens

A free Kindle book that was recommended to me

For Tuesday through Thursday ONLY,(July 9-11) "
BEAST
- A Slightly Irreverent Tale About Cancer (And Other Assorted Anecdotes)," by James Capuano, is being offered free and has an unusual mixture of reviewers.

Capuano is a Sr. VP for Reuters, and his book about fighting the Beast (the dreaded C) has, so far, 10 customer reviews (including a couple of them by people who know him) and several reviews or blurbs by others.  Here are a few of them.

1. "The funniest book about cancer you will ever read. Capuano manages to humanize his harrowing journey without bathos and yet I still walked away crying, with tears of sadness and laughter.  No mean trick. ... A memoir both tender and hard for the healthy and the sick." - David Duchovny, actor (THE X FILES, CALIFORNICATION)

2. "Nothing about cancer is funny – so why did I laugh so hard at James Capuano’s personal story about his struggles with Stage 4 colon cancer?  Simply put; because it’s hilarious.  Never one to run away from the truth, his in-your-face account tells it like it is, providing valuable insight into how this disease affects not only the body and the mind, but also family and friends.  As he addresses key issues associated with cancer treatment we learn how his life experiences prepared him to face this devastating disease head on, presenting the reader with valuable insight into the human condition in a surprisingly life-affirming tale." - Susan Sarandon, Actress

FROM MONDAY'S NEWS
Barnes and Noble's CEO
William Lynch Jr., the CEO of Barnes and Noble, resigned on Monday.  He'd led the development of the Nook products, which as of Winter 2012 have not been selling well and B&N announced they'd be halting production on those and looking for a partner to take on the costs of manufacturing them.  Several articles mention Microsoft has shown some interest in doing this.

An article at marketintelligencecenter lists and describes what author Michael Fowlkes sees as several bad choices by Microsoft in partnering recently.  It'll be interesting to see what Microsoft decides on the Nook tablet situation.  They've already given support of $600 million there.

Dual-screen YotaPhone announced in Russia (as its first smartphone)

Bloomberg
's Mark Milia reports on the announcement, by Yota Devices, of Russia's first Smartphone, a combination of the usual LCD screen and a separate e-Ink screen (the latter promising less eyestrain in daylight and certainly better battery life plus the ability to hold a desired image on the sleep-screen. However, Milia adds:
' The YotaPhone packs both screens into one, bulkier phone. That could make it a tough sell as companies brag to consumers how thin their smartphones are. The YotaPhone is thicker and heavier than the 3-year-old iPhone 4.
...
The YotaPhone, which runs on Android, is expected to cost between $400 and $500 before any carrier subsidies, Martynov said.
"Initially, we'll go for the Russian market because it's our home," Martynov said. "But we are talking already with several European and North American carriers." '
  More details at Bloomberg's site.

Kindle Book Alert: Temporarily Free Kindle book on 'mastering' basic camera settings

An excellent Kindle guide to photography basics is free for another day or so.

Guven Witteveen sent an alert yesterday that a book on the basics of camera settings -- what they mean and how they work together -- is free for a day or so.  Generally the free promos are one day to five, the average seeming to be 2 days while some are free for only a few hours.

This one is a guide to 'mastering' the concepts of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure, written by AI Judge, whose Kindle books on photography basics get high ratings for clarity.  It's not a book for advanced users who already use these controls with a good understanding of them.  It's for those who depend on 'auto' mode but would like to experiment with more control over their results when they want.

Kindle News: Free Kindle book until midnight Thurs. 2/7, 'John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood'

Highly rated book on what caused Disney Studios, in just 10 days, to declare a much awaited film a flop and lock it away in the vaults.

Written by Michael D. Sellers, this Kindle book has 36 customer reviews and an average rating of 4.8 stars.

The Facebook site says this is free "until midnight Thursday" and they explain that downloading the book will help paid sales of the book. They also say that "Disney Blogger Daniel Butcher ... calls it 'fair, factual, an enlightening assessment of what went wrong' with the movie."

Sounds like a fun read for free. 370 pages. Here's the publisher's Book Description.
' It took 100 years to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars to the big screen.  It took Disney Studios just ten days to declare the film a flop and lock it away in the Disney vaults.  How did this project, despite its quarter-billion dollar budget, the brilliance of director Andrew Stanton, and the creative talents of legendary Pixar Studios, become a calamity of historic proportions?

Michael Sellers, a filmmaker and Hollywood insider himself, saw the disaster approaching and fought to save the project – but without success.  In John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, Sellers details every blunder and betrayal that led to the doom of the motion picture – and that left countless Hollywood careers in the wreckage.

JOHN CARTER AND THE GODS OF HOLLYWOOD examines every aspect of Andrew Stanton's adaptation and Disney's marketing campaign and seeks to answer the question: What went wrong? it includes a history of Hollywood's 100 year effort to bring the film to the screen, and examines the global fan movement spawned by the film. '

Free Kindle books from Konrath and Crouch, 23 each, for one more day. Other free books and promos. Update: Millions of Kindle Fires + Millions of Kindle ereaders purchased, two Indy authors #1 and #4

Happily satiated with so many free Kindle books

Danish Polar Bear Cub Siku lies in bliss after just being fed, and it reminded me (okay, I just needed an excuse to post that picture!) of Kindlers after downloading so many free books each day lately (although I've seen that some are actually exhausted by the sheer number of them and the choices to be made).
(For the others interested, here's the story and video for Siku. Kindle edition subscribers can't do video but can use the following link at a computer: bit.ly/blissed-out-siku )
One more: an even better Siku videoclip (1-1/2 min.) (Link: bit.ly/siku-2 )

I actually ran across a Daily Mail comment that makes Siku almost on-topic :-)

Back to the many free Kindle books available lately
And now, J.A. Konrath and Blake Crouch offer a few more.
Two days ago, at 9:35 AM, December 27, the bestselling author J.A. Konrath announced:
' I've sold 7000 ebooks in the last 36 hours, making over $14,000.

For the next three days, I'm making 23 of my titles free on Amazon Kindle. '

He added that "Blake Crouch is doing the same" and then linked us to their general pages of books.

Since there is only ONE DAY REMAINING (I tweeted this but then was not here most of the time to blog it) I'm giving two links that will lead straight to the free 23 books for each, heading lists of their books, sorted low-to-high price.  The "next three days" would end Thursday night (tonight) or at 9:35am Friday morning.  I'd go for midnight tonight to be sure you get them while they're free.

J.A. Konrath's 23+ free  Kindle books [ Update 12/31/11 - That sale is now over.]

Blake Crouch's 23+ free Kindle books [ Update 12/31/11 - That sale is now over.]

UPDATE - Am adding that Amazon just announced that "Amazon customers purchased millions of Kindle Fires and millions of Kindle e-readers" in what they describe as "...the Best Holiday Ever for Kindle"

So you'll see the news sites quoting the numbers galore for a few days.

They also mention a nice side effect: "Authors also continue to benefit from the success of Kindle — the #1 and #4 best-selling Kindle books released in 2011 were both published independently by their authors using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)."

Darcie Chan, the author of ‘The Mill River Recluse,’ and Chris Culver, the author of ‘The Abbey,’ wrote "two of the best-selling Kindle books of the year."
I remember noticing The Mill River Recluse, on August 25, when looking for a good, low-cost book to highlight for blog readers and the same for The Abbey, on August 30.  Sometimes, a high number of positive customer reviews, along with low-negative counts, will indicate very high interest.
See the press release for quite a bit more detail.

Today's Kindle Daily Deal
This particular link will always get you the current deal, ending midnight each day. (mostly U.S.)
Today's is Margaret Atwood's infamous and uplifting (just kidding) "The Handmaid's Tale" which was priced at $8.99 yesterday but, with a $7.50 discount today (Wed., 29th), is $1.49 83% off

In the meantime, what about the daily free Kindle books?
Here's this morning's announcement, by the Kindle Forum's Joyce, of the latest release of (294) free Kindle books.  She of course is not listing each one when there are so many but is referring you to one of the sites she uses when collecting the titles and it's the one with a lot of information for each book although it then takes some time to go through them.
When wanting to browse the latest titles faster although with less detail upfront (more will show in popups when hovering over one) try EReaderIQ.

Discount Alerts from the Kindle Forum
Haven't had time to keep up with all the free books and discount alerts, but here's the latest page of the discounted and dropped-price alerts from the forum community, and you can work back if interested in earlier pages.

Don't forget Amazon's LtdTime Free Kindle Book Promos or Amazon's mostly 99c Kindle books page.

Special Japan Earthquake 'Aftershocks' book temporarily free again

2:46: Aftershocks: Stories from the Japan Earthquake, by The quakebook community, edited by Our Man in Abiko, 24 customer reviews, 5 stars

Although the file was available via Amazon for $0.00 for one morning, on May 20, via the one-click box, it was already no longer free later that day and was listed as $9.99.  So, this lasted barely half a day last time.  They may have had an unanticipated number of downloads that day.

From the Product Description: "In just over a week, a group of unpaid professional and citizen journalists who met on Twitter created a book to raise money for Japanese Red Cross earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.  In addition to essays, artwork and photographs submitted by people around the world, including people who endured the disaster and journalists who covered it... contains...work created specifically for the book by authors William Gibson, Barry Eisler and Jake Adelstein."

“The primary goal,” says the book's editor, a British resident of Japan, “is to record the moment, and in doing so raise money for the Japanese Red Cross Society to help the thousands of homeless, hungry and cold survivors of the earthquake and tsunami. The biggest frustration for many of us was being unable to help these victims..."

Amazon has highlighted this book for weeks.  Now that it's free again for however long, there's no revenue during this time that they'd normally just forward to the Japanese Red Cross Society, the ebook's product page points out that a donation can still be made to American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund.  The many customer reviews are worth a read if you're wondering whether to download the book.

Free Kindle book, 5/27/11

Kali: The Food Goddess, A Compilation of Delightful Recipes and Memories of Food , by Kali Amanda Browne, 1 customer review, 5 stars (not a verified purchase). $0.00 today.

The one review is written by the owner of the website for which the author posts essays and food recipes.  The website owner writes: "Wonderful multicultural offerings (should I say "fusion"?) that blend all that's best about Caribbean/American/Spanish/Chinese/Middle Eastern cuisines. She's a global culinary force to be reckoned with, one of those rare cooks who combine art and practicality in their creations.  Do yourself a favor and give this cookbook a try, if only for the wonderful story about the Chinese influence in Puerto Rico and the recipe for stuffed peppers.  Trust me.  You won't be disappointed!"

Product description: "An edited compilation of recipes and essays originally published between 2006 - 2010. Includes 24 indexed recipes and cuisines include Puerto Rican, Spanish and Chinese, along with adaptations of some classics."

(Two other books by an author released for $0 today were reviewed as filled with writing errors to an unusual degree, so I'm not including those.)

Kindle News: Amazon selling more Kindle Books than Print books since April 1. Unusual free book for today. AdMash. UPDATE

AMAZON ALREADY SELLING MORE KINDLE BOOKS THAN PRINT BOOKS

First, today's very-interesting new temporarily-free book: Know the Past, Find the Future: The New York Public Library at 100, by various authors.

Penguin Classics released the Kindle edition of the 100th birthday celebration yesterday.  This is another large e-book in file size - 13 MB, so it takes storage space on the Kindle equivalent to approximately 13 average-sized novels and will take a bit longer to download.  It's also "Optimized for larger screens" which means the photos will be in high resolution to look good on a 10" screen also.

UPDATE
As usual, you can zoom a photo to full-screen (most are large but they're actually clearer if you zoom the vertical or Portrait-mode one) by putting your cursor into the center of a photo and clicking there.
HOWEVER, with *SOME* horizontal or Landscape-mode pictures that are about half-page, the Kindle STOPS at "zooming..." and appears to be hung.  It isn't.  It just doesn't know what to do. Press Back button and it returns to normal.

TO GET any small but stubborn half-page Landscape-mode photos zoomed to fill the screen in Landscape mode, you press the Aa text/font key and choose a Landscape orientation first (for some reason).  THEN the photo fills the screen in Landscape mode and is clearer.  To get the text back into Portrait-orientation or vertical mode, press Aa key again and choose the normal vertical mode.  You won't want to do this for most half-page photos, as they're not scenic shots :-)  Those with DX's have automated screen rotation. [End of Update]

Here's the text from the Product Description:
' From Laurie Anderson to Vampire Weekend, Roy Blount, Jr., to Renée Fleming, Stephen Colbert to Bill T. Jones - more than 100 luminaries reflect on the treasures of America's favorite public library.

Marking the centennial of The New York Public Library's Beaux-Arts landmark at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, now called the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Know the Past, Find the Future harnesses the thoughts of an eclectic assortment of notable people as they ponder an even more eclectic assortment of objects.

From among the Library's vast collections, these writers, artists, philosophers, scientists, musicians, athletes, architects, choreographers, and journalists - as well as some of the curators who have preserved these riches - each select an item and describe its unique significance.

The result, in words and photographs, is a glimpse of what a great library can be.   Published by Penguin Classics for The New York Public Library '
I hopped on that one.

Kindle books outsold print books at Amazon earlier than anticipated by anyone.
Amazon issued a press release today, saying that sooner than even they had anticipated, Amazon is now selling more Kindle books than print books.
' Since April 1, for every 100 print books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 105 Kindle books.

This includes sales of hardcover and paperback books by Amazon where there is no Kindle edition.  Free Kindle books are excluded...

Amazon sold more than 3x as many Kindle books so far in 2011 as it did during the same period in 2010.

Less than one year after introducing the UK Kindle Store, Amazon.co.uk is now selling more Kindle books than hardcover books, even as hardcover sales continue to grow. Since April 1, Amazon.co.uk customers are purchasing Kindle books over hardcover books at a rate of more than 2 to 1. '
Also, they point out that the new $114 Kindle with Special Offers and ads is currently the bestselling member of the Kindle family in the U.S.  Sold at 3200+ Walmarts where the only other Kindle choice is the $189 3G Kindle, that's not surprising.  And the Special Offers have been attractive enough to some Kindlers who are requesting they be an optional software update for older Kindles (ads would be part of that too).  I'm not one requesting this.

AdMash - a Kindle app (Kindle apps are currently U.S. only)
Some Kindle owners, including some prominent Kindle bloggers, are writing that they enjoy the new AdMash game-style app which any Kindle 3 owner in the U.S. can 'play' when accessing a WiFi network -- it doesn't work over 3G cellular access, as it would be too costly for Amazon.  I'm not one of those playing, as I prefer my reading space ad-free and Amazon offers non-ad versions of Kindles for those not keen on ads (even those placed so as not to interfere with book reading).  However, most have seemed keen on the Special Offers portion and Amazon's Jay Marine has said they may consider offering the combo as an optional update at a later date as many have requested on Kindle forums).
' Here's how it works.  AdMash will show you two different screensavers and then ask you to vote for the one you like best.  Scrutinize them or go with your gut, it's up to you.  Once you've made your choice, it's on to the next round.  The ones that get the most votes can become Kindle Sponsored Screensavers.  It's up to you and the rest of the community to pick your favorites.

Download AdMash and start voting now.  Play as often as you like and we'll keep adding new screensavers for you to vote on. '
It's an advertiser' dream.  The audience not only winds up viewing more than one ad for an ad campaign but participates in a relatively intense way vs being annoyed by one ad and ignoring it.

In the examples I saw yesterday, showing what these are like, there were definitely ads I preferred over others and since they will be showing up as screensleepers on the Kindle-SO, owners of that new lower-cost ad-supported Kindle will be the most interested in either choosing one that they'll need to see when the Kindle goes to sleep or making a thumbs-down on the other.
But those with a Kindle 3 (in the U.S.), whether the Kindle-SO or the WiFi only model, or the one with 3G Cellular network access, will have the option to use the app.

FREE Kindle book - Student Travel Guide to Europe, 2011

Let's Go Europe 2011
- Normally $21.95, FREE currently

Let's Go Europe 2011: The Student Travel Guide (Kindle Ed.), is authored by Inc., Harvard Student Agencies whose Kindle books with more specific European locations cost between $9.66 - $9.99.  They're providing this Kindle book for $0.00 right now, on what is likely a temporary 'price.'

Released in January 2011, it has 9 customer reviews with 4 stars out of 5. It's quite large (at 1,232 pages), as most Kindle books that are mainly text average less than 1 meg, and this one is about 3 megs and will take longer to load, which indicates it has more than the usual number of images. Product description:
' From Portugal to the Ukraine, from Norway down to Greece, Europe is a lot to take on.  Luckily, the student adventurers behind Let’s Go Europe 2011 know that any traveler can handle it — with a little help.  Whether whipping through London, Barcelona, and Prague in five days or spending a leisurely year abroad, travelers get all the info they need from Let's Go.  Their wit and irreverence can brighten even the drabbest Renaissance museum — if travelers didn’t take their advice to skip it.  From German beer halls to Roman ruins, Let's Go Europe 2011 is the ticket to adventure. '

CAVEAT The two Kindle book reviews I see (the rest are paperback reviews) say it's well worth downloading as a free book, but is written by Harvard students for other students and one reviewer thinks it's mainly for students with money to spare -- I used to go on the $5/day books :-) And the paperback version had less information on hostel locations than a couple of people wanted.

On the other hand, another reviewer says:
' However, to be honest, the listings for stuff like accommodations and nightlife are just UNBEATABLE, so I'm willing to deal with the flaws in order to get those recommendations.

I was trying to keep to a budget, so maybe I'm biased, but when I opened the Lonely Planet and Frommer's guides in the bookstore, their idea of "cheap" was like...65 euro a night. Even the "shoestring" book was borderline. That's just not the sort of budget I'm operating on.
Let's Go, on the other hand, listed hostels and cheap mom-and-pop places that got me through most of Western Europe on 20 euro or less a night. No complaints about those prices. '

Some think the writing is fun while others find it geared toward those who look for drinking places.  The maps and even some icons are said to be very hard to read on the Kindle (I recommend viewing these in Landscape mode, which may handle better some bad layout problems mentioned.)

  For $0.00, it's worth a look.
