What Is Node?
Author: Brett McLaughlin
Genre: Computers ad Internet

DESCRIPTION: Node.js. It's the latest in a long line of "Are you cool enough to use me?" programminglanguages, APIs, and toolkits. In that sense, it lands squarely in the tradition of Rails, and Ajax, and Hadoop, and even to some degree iPhone programming and HTML5. Dig a little deeper, and you'll hear that Node.js (or, as it's more briefly called by many, simply "Node") is a server-side solution for JavaScript, and in particular, for receivingand responding to HTTP requests. If that doesn't completely boggle your mind, by thetime the conversation heats up with discussion of ports, sockets, and threads, you'lltend to glaze over. Is this really JavaScript? In fact, why in the world would anyonewant to run JavaScript outside of a browser, let alone the server? The good news is that you're hearing (and thinking) about the right things. Node reallyis concerned with network programming and server-side request/response processing. The bad news is that like Rails, Ajax, and Hadoop before it, there's precious little clearinformation available. There will be, in time - as there now is for these other "cool"frameworks that have matured - but why wait for a book or tutorial when you mightbe able to use Node today, and dramatically improve the maintainability.

What Is HTML5?
Author: Brett McLaughlin
Genre: Computers and Internet

DESCRIPTION: HTML5: Everyone's using it, nobody knows what it is. I realize that sounds more like a line out of an existential movie - maybe Waiting for Godot or a screenplay by Sartre - than a statement about HTML5. But it's really the truth: most of the people using HTML5 are treating it as HTML4+, or even worse, HTML4 (and some stuff they don't use). The result? A real delay in the paradigm shift that HTML5 is almost certain to bring. It's certainly not time to look away, because by the time you look back, you may have missed something really important: a subtle but important transition centered around HTML5.

The Birth of the Peacekeepers.
Author: Ricky Sides

DESCRIPTION: Centered around a series of natural disasters of biblical proportions that are occurring on a global scale, tens of millions have died as a result of the earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, gigantic super cell thunderstorms and tornados that are ravaging the earth. A rogue nation decides to take advantage of the chaos at this time to attack America with nuclear weapons. The American intelligence network learns of the plan and the government decides to launch a first strike at this rogue nation. This information leaks out to other nations and soon the world is poised on the brink of all out nuclear conflagration as the nuclear nations choose sides in the coming conflict. As the militaries of the world go underground in preparation for the attack most of the world is blissfully ignorant of what is about to happen. There are a few exceptions to this. The civilians that are aware make plans to try to survive the attack as well. As the moment for the attack draws near, the disaster plagued planet is beset by earthquakes of unprecedented intensity and numbers. Oddly the epicenters seem to be located at every major military installation around the world. (It is implied and hinted at that divine intervention has saved mankind from nuclear war, though it is never outright stated.) When the survivors of the earthquakes look around them the next morning they see a world drastically changed. A few men and women struggle to cope with the devastation as best they can but many turn to marauding as a means of survival. Preying on any people they encounter they slaughter any that oppose them as they take anything they want. A few of the survivors band together to protect those weaker than themselves.

Phineas (Ordinal)
Author: Joseph Gellene

DESCRIPTION: Phineas is a short (2600 word) story covering a very brief moment on the life of an Ordinal. Ordinals experience linear time for brief periods; they have no control over when and where they'll jump next but they've developed ways to manage their lives and remain undetected by Linears. I wrote this several years ago. I had just finished reading a collection of short stories from the 1930's and 40's. The style might be a bit old-fashioned for some. I had considered altering it for a more modern style but decided that the speaker was from an older time and would therefore speak as such. The ideas behind Phineas led directly to the full-length novel, Convergence.

Liberal vs. Conservative: A Novella
Author: Scott Reeves

DESCRIPTION: When two families go to war, liberal versus conservative, which side will win? Civil war breaks out in the suburbs when avid talk radio show listener and devout conservative Marty Johnson becomes fed up with liberal policies. He and his wife decide to take out their frustrations by declaring war on the quintessential liberal family that lives next door, the Kaufmans. The ensuing war of ideologies soon threatens to tear both families apart. This 27,000-word satirical novella features cameos by Sean Hannity and Jon Stewart.

The Women of Tenacity
Author: Shanna Hatfield

DESCRIPTION: Welcome to Tenacity! Meet the stubborn, independent women who live here and the wild, rugged men who love them. Callan Matthews lives a hectic life balancing a demanding job as she works to start her own business. Her husband Clay, the consummate prankster, decides it is up to him to get Callan to lighten up and have a little fun. Jenna Carver is a confirmed city girl even if her husband Josh conveniently forgets that fact as he drags her from one farm adventure to another. Laken Johnson loves her two kids, but when her husband Tyler unexpectedly drops them off at her gift shop, she doesn't know if she or the store will survive.

Hush (crime fiction, police procedural)
Author: Theresa Weir

DESCRIPTION: Few serial killers penned by suspense writers today are as warped or as fully realized as the Madonna Murderer, who preys on newborn baby boys and their unwed mothers. As if the crime itself isn't bad enough, the killer leaves a musical snow globe that plays "Hush, Little Baby" in the infant's crib as his calling card. It has been nearly two decades since Ivy Dunlap and her infant son were victimized by the Madonna Murderer. Unbeknownst to the killer, Ivy survived the assault. Her baby didn't. Now a respected criminal psychologist, Ivy is called into service by the Chicago P.D. when the killer resurfaces after 16 years of dormancy. Her personal interest in the case takes on a sharper edge when she learns that her partner, Detective Max Irving, has a son named Ethan who is the same age her child would have been had he survived. When Ivy tries to rattle the Madonna Murderer by publishing a "dead-baby letter" in the newspaper, the killer becomes more daring; he befriends Ethan, sends Ivy a chunk of his skin bearing a tattoo and expands his profile of victims. Although some readers may be turned off by the novel's graphic nature, a wealth of procedural detail, a heart-thumping finale and two scarred but indelible protagonists make this a first-rate debut.

Hexes and Tooth Decay: A Short Story
Author: Nancy Fulda

DESCRIPTION: A grumpy rock fairy crosses paths with an impolite witch, and trouble ensues.

And to All a Good Night (Life Lessons)
Author: Kaje Harper

DESCRIPTION: In Life Lessons, MPD detective Mac and high school teacher Tony decided that a relationship in the closet was worth the difficulties involved. And in the evening, over the phone, they try to touch each other with words. Any proceeds from this book will be donated to The Aliveness Project, Minneapolis.

Sojourner (Book 1) (Sojourner Series)
Author: Maria Rachel Hooley

DESCRIPTION: Seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Moon has been dreaming of her murder her entire life, and in those dreams, a dark presence is there, watching. When she returns home to Hauser's Landing, the very place her father disappeared, she comes in contact with a gorgeous boy named Lev Walker, and it's not long before she's falling in love. But there's something wrong with Lev. When she realizes he's the eerie watcher in her dreams, she'll have to discover the truth. Is he a guardian angel or a sojourner, an angel of death who has come to collect her soul? This is Book 1 of the Sojourner series.

Author: Scott O'Connor

DESCRIPTION: In his first novel, UNTOUCHABLE, Scott O'Connor speaks softly and somehow manages to make something beautiful of unspeakable matters--like the gruesome mop-up after someone has taken a gun to his head. These are the matters that fall to David Darby, a strapping fellow with an armful of tattoos and a sensitive attitude toward his job as a trauma site technician. If Darby's profession has made him something of an untouchable, his young son has become a pariah at school because he refuses to speak, a self-imposed punishment after the death of his mother. ("He had," he's convinced, "made her sick and sad.") O'Connor tells a wisp of a story, but in a voice so insistently stirring, you want to lean in close to catch every word. It is the autumn of 1999. A year has passed since Lucy Darby's unexpected death, leaving her husband David and son Whitley to mend the gaping hole in their lives. David, a trauma-site cleanup technician, spends his nights expunging the violent remains of strangers, helping their families to move on, though he is unable to do the same. Whitley - an 11 year-old social pariah known simply as The Kid - hasn't spoken since his mother's death. Instead, he communicates through a growing collection of notebooks, living in a safer world of his own silent imagining. '

If you're having problems leaving a Comment, Google's blogger-help asks that you clear the '' cookies on your browser's Tools or Options menu bar and that will fix the Comment-box problems (until they have a permanent fix).
